As I was checking out the tale of the tape for the Cena/Benoit match last night this hit me. They had to fill up Cena's side w/all sorts of bullshit like PHD in Thuganomics because he's never held a title. So I remebered back to him having that title match w/Brock at a ppv a few months ago. I know we all figured he would lose, but if he'd won then the world title would've been the first title he ever held. So my question is has that ever happened, someone winning the world title for their first belt?

At least on the Major Promotion World Title Big Two or 3 Scale and I'm just working off the top of my head here:

Kane in 1998, Hogan in 1984 (Unless you count the IWGP Title, which would be a "world" title as well, actually), Paul Wight in 1995, Undertaker in 1991, Andre The Giant in 1988 (he had never held a major title to that point) and Brock Lesnar in 2002.

There's prolly more, but I'm not thinking of them all.

Also, Vince Russo, Vince McMahon and David Arquette never held any of the secondary titles first :P

Dont forget Jerry Lynn whose winning the ECW world title was the first major title he held.
(By the Ways) Cena was the OVW champ, granted its not that big of a promotion, but its a pretty important step anyhow.

Bob Backlund maybe? I don't seem to remember seeing his name on any title histories besides WWF.

I had a feeling Hogan was one. Brock I don't think was though. I remember him fueding with RVD over the IC title and I think Brock held it before getting the big belt.

Oh man, I had blocked out the whole Russo and Arquette blasphemy reigns. Cause I was thinking had Cena won the world title as his first that would put him in pretty elite company. But I guess not.

As for him being the OVW champ. Yeah that is all well and good, but that's like a triple A championship.

Brock, atleast in the major promotions won the WWE World Title first. He had a feud with RVD going over the IC title and King of the Ring, since brock won KOTR but their title match ended in DQ, and Brock just moved onto the world title.

Hogan and Brock were definatley given the World title before any other. Brock feuded RVD for the IC belt but it was an afterthought and Lesnar didn't win it.

I think Yokozuna was also one who won the world belt (1993) before getting any other belt. (1995 - tag) I could be wrong though.

Buckland won the World title in 1978, a few years before getting the tag belts with Pedro Morales in 1980. And he still hold the World belt at the time, I think.

Any WWE champions before June 1971 when the next belt was formed (Tag) would fit too. So Buddy Rogers, Bruno Sammartino, Ivan Koloff, and Peter Morales are in. I think Stan Stasiak's little reign would also count, as well as Billy Graham's and the Iron Sheik's.

But let's not forget Vince McMahon's reign! Either. Although, I wish I could. Heh.

Backlund was the NWA Missouri champ (which at the time was a fairly important title) in 1976 so scratch him from the list.

No don't scratch him off the list that doesn't really count. What count's really are the wwf/e titles and the wcw titles.

So Ric Flair's NWA titles don't count? :)

I believe the Sarge was also US champion well before coming to the WWF.

You could add Big Van Vader to that list (WCW - '92) as he didn't win any secondary titles (US) until late 1994 when Hogan made it clear he wasn't going to let anyone outside his circle of friends get to carry the world belt again. That's the only guy I can think of that hasn't been mentioned (my knowledge of 1980s NWA champions isn't good enough to speculate on those).

Slaughter was America's champion in the AWA in the mid 80's (different belt than the NWA US Title), after holding the NWA Tag Titles with the man, the myth, the legend Don Kernodle.
Backlund's Missouri Title counts as a real title, because if that isn't a real belt, then Kerry Von Erich's American Championship in World Class wouldn't be considered a real belt, thus his NWA Title would be his first belt.

I can understand the NWA regional titles not counting, but what about the AWA belts? For a long time, they were a pretty major player, and they'd probably disqualify a lot of people that've been mentioned.

Yeah Brock Lesnar never won the IC title from RVD. That was Brocks first loss as he lost by DQ.

That was Brock's second loss. He lost a handicap match to the Hardy Boyz by DQ on Raw I think. His first pinfall loss came when Heyman screwed him out of the title at SurSer 2002.

I would argue for the NWA regional titles counting for the pre-consolidation era wrestlers. Holding the Missouri title in 1976 would easily qualify as being as important as holding the European title, or the US Tag titles or something like that.
