Looking at the Country listings, I can attest to the following:
1. Faith Hill is NOT country anymore (a good listen to her latest drivel will affirm that); yet she's marketed as one. I couldn't find one good track on that album .
2. Shania Twain's new album is saturating the airwaves here in Canada...in fact, I believe six tracks have already been released off UP so far. Couple that with the fact that her tour just steamrolled through Edmonton....
I would kill to see someone other than Faith or Shania win, but good look to that.

Faith Hill - yeah this cd ain't that great and she might not be country anymore but she has a great voice. Better voice than just about any other women singer. But i'm not a big fan of this album.
Shania - she's really just good looking that's all. I have never enjoyed a single one of her songs.
I'd agree with bash91 that Willie Nelson is the winner out of a bunch of bad choices. I guess even the new hip nomination committee can't pass up on Willie Nelson. | Oliver

Out of all the country albums released this year, I think Dierks Bentley's debut album was probably the strongest release in 2003. Where's the love? What were they thinking? ;-) | Peter The Hegemon

(edited by OlFuzzyBastard on 5.12.03 1024)
I don't know exactly when American IV was released, but it was definately too early to be eligible, because it in fact was nominated for Best Contemporary Folk Album last year (it lost to Nickel Creek).
"Hurt" would be eligible in all performance/record categories, but not in song categories. It was, in fact, nominated for Best Music Video this year, since the video was made later. It wasn't nominated as a performance last year, though. "Give My Love To Rose" not only was nominated for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male, it won. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was nominated for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals but lost to Willie Nelson and Lee Ann Womack. So not a terrible showing for Johnny, but clearly he should have had the foresight to be dead before his album was voted for, as George and Warren (and Johnny's own missus) did.
And Johnny is nominated this year, in addition to the aforementioned video, in that Collaboration category again, this time for "Temptation" from June's album.

Oddly enough, September 30 is the cut-off, so Johnny Cash's album was released in the timeframe for this year's awards (it was released in Nov 2002), but as you said, it got nominations last year. The Grammys did that with American III as well (an Oct 2000 release), ignoring the deadlines to award Johnny Cash. Through pure speculation on my part, I think they did that with his last two LPs solely because they didn't think he'd live to make another. | | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
