| #1 Posted on 3.12.03 1258.08 Reposted on: 3.12.10 1258.36 | David DuPree tossed this idea out a few days ago in USA Today, and it sounded interesting enough to bring over here:
If you were to create a seven man team from the NBA teams in California (Golden State, Sacremento, Clippers and Lakers) and match them up against a seven man team from the teams in Texas (Dallas, Houston and San Antonio), who would win in a seven game series?
Here's what I've got:
California C: Shaquille O'Neal, Los Angeles Lakers PF: Elton Brand, Los Angeles Clippers SF: Peja Stojakovic, Sacramento SG: Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers PG: Nick Van Exel, Golden State Bench: Mike Bibby, Sacremento; Karl Malone, Los Angeles Lakers
Texas C: Yao Ming, Houston PF: Tim Duncan, San Antonio SF: Antoine Walker, Dallas SG: Manu Ginobili, San Antonio PG: Steve Nash, Dallas Bench: Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas; Steve Francis, Houston
I tried to have one player from each team starting, which made picking the California team a bit harder.
As far as a seven game series goes, looking at the matchups in my rosters, Shaq and Yao cancel each other out, as do Peja and Antoine. But Duncan would handle Brand at the 4, and Nash beats out Van Exel at the point. Texas' bench is stronger, so I'd give them the nod, winning 4-3. But of course, your mileage may vary.

O'Neal over Yao (C) Duncan over Brand (T) Stojakovic draw Walker (-) Bryant over Ginobli (C) Nash over Van Exel (T) Nowitzki over Malone (T) Bibby over Francis (C)
The biggest diff, though, is at C...I take a 100% Shaq over Yao 100 times out of 100. Same could be said for Bryant. Plus, the guys on Team Cali have more big game experience and, Shaq and Kobe at least, are proven winners. | Big Bad

... They're pretty even as players, but I seem to recall Van Exel getting the best of Payton on a lot of head-to-head playoff matchups when Nick was with the Lakers and Gary with the Sonics. Definitely an entertaining matchup, as both guys were never at a loss for words when they were on the court. | Battlezone

I chose Van Exel over Payton because I wanted to have a representative from each team, as opposed to loading the team up with Lakers...and Elton Brand.
The think I noticed while making my picks was that while California has four teams, Texas' three teams are deeper, and there's quite a few players on those three teams that could swap in for anybody, 'cept for maybe Yao.

I'd say it's pretty even too. In this situation though you need someone to dish the ball not someone to score, I think i'd go with Payton in that situation, plus his defense on Nash would be much be much better. But I understand the wanting to use someone from all the teams.
Personally I'd take out Ginobili for Michael Finley and either play Finley at guard or play Nash and Francis together. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
