I know a lot of folks may view the National Review as a less than unbiased source, but this report about this theory is mind boggling, even from the vegetarian and feminist crowd:

With anthropornography the attitudes toward women found in Playboy and other heterosexual pornography can be expressed freely yet in a disguised way — with nonhuman animals as the objects. Anthropornography provides a way for men to bond publicly around misogyny.

"[S]ome of the paraphernalia for hunters suggest the nonhuman as a fixated love object"; "Women used in meat advertisements aren't selling a product through 'sex appeal.' Women are being used to re-present sexual murders, of which meat eating may be one facet"; and "forcibly impregnating female nonhumans" — i.e., the breeding techniques employed on ranches and farms — is "the speciesist version of keeping females barefoot and pregnant."

The hell?

So I have to ask if anybody has ever felt sexually fixated towards their dinner?

The point of all of this, of course, is to show once more the absurdity of things that are taken seriously in academia these days. What's more concerning is the fact that people worry about this kind of crap while there are other, more important issues to worry about, even for social scientists.

As a meber of said academia, I take great offense at the constant use of a select group of nuts trying to garner publicity being used to represent "academia." Grimis I could take fruitcakes on the other end of the academic spectrum and make a similar arguement but I don't. Want to know why? I realize they are a select minority of the entire academic community and no more represent academia than the nutcase you cite. The great thing regarding academia is the ability and even encouragement of an entire spectrum of thought. Yes I know that ALL universities and colleges are bastions of liberal thought who shoot conservatives on sight.

One item that everyone should learn in college is that the plural of anecdote is not data. I believe you and others when you cite your experiences reagrding liberal intolerant professors, etc. but that cannot be used to represent the spectrum of educational opportunity in our country. Plus using quotes from social scientists means nothing because the term social science is an oxymoron.

And the answer to you question is yes if it involves chocolate for dessert.

Speaking from someone who eats to live, but doesn't live to eat, Y'all is weird.

Doc, I am sorry, but the exploits of academia are not just anecdotal when it happens over and over again.

AWA, I don't disagree with what is said in the links you provided, but again, they represent a fraction of the departments and colleges in a university. They come from a philosopher and social scientist. Let's see, I am at K-State and we have a Vet College, College of Agriculture, College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Architecture, and a few others. I can assure you that in almost all of these colleges that there is if anything a conservative leaning with a wide array of viewpoints.

Our small colleges out here in Kansas almost all have a religious affiliation. Many with conservative denomination affiliations. People constantly spout philosophers socialists, and psychologists in an academic setting and proceed to paint with a broad brush. Most kids i know in college are they to get a degree and with it a good job. There seems to be a feeling they are being corrupted but if parents did their jobs for the first 18 years, I doubt they will be brainwashed. I agree that fruitloops like the one Grimis cited need to be taken to task but really if we ignore them they will go away.

I went to OSU for my grad degrees and trust me, it wasn't a bastion of liberalism.

And I agree with Zed as long as it's medium rare and smothered in mushrooms and with some really good bread.

Therein lies the rub. They are often times not taken to task, but embraced. Conversely, those who disagree with these bizarre things that are embraced are harrassed. I have told the story more than once about the Diversity Coordinated at my school who called me a racist because I was white and disagree with affirmative action...

Then, there is Texas A&M athletic director bitching that the "affirmative action bake sale" held on campus should by the Young Conservatives of Texas was bad because it hurt recruiting.

Remember, free speech is welcomed on most campuses, as long as it agrees with the orthodoxy. I understand Doc how that could be offensive. That is not a slap at you as a member of academia. But it is definately the generalized stereotypical view of college professors, the kind who come out an announce they hate Republicans.

Incidentally, more issues here.

Um, hello, this is TEXAS you're talking about. If something there even comes close to interfering with football, it's viewed as being downright UN-AMERICAN.

Grimis, the best thing we can do with extreme nutcases is not give them an audience. The problem with what you cited, to me, is they are not involved with the academic side of things but the student life side of things and promulgated by "Administrators" not professors. In most universites I contend you can have any opinion you want. If you want to argue with the profs, I personally think that it's great as long as both sides conduct it civilly and with respect.

And for those of you in college, her's a dirty little secret they don't want you to know, "They work for you." That doesn't mean you can be an ass but you do have rights which many of you don't seem to recognize.

I once had a 4 lb. Austrailian lobster stuffed with crab meat that was pretty frickin' arousing.
