What in gay hell???

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news? tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031201/ap_on_re_us/gay_mother_school

What a way to ingrain the word "gay" into that child's mind...Make him write it down!

Have we really become that PC? Can we not call Homosexuals "gay?"

This is soooo gay.

LAFAYETTE, La. - A 7-year-old boy was scolded and forced to write "I will never use the word `gay' in school again" after he told a classmate about his lesbian mother, the American Civil Liberties Union alleged Monday.

Second-grader Marcus McLaurin was waiting for recess Nov. 11 at Ernest Gaullet Elementary School when a classmate asked about Marcus' mother and father, the ACLU said in a complaint.

Marcus responded he had two mothers because his mother is gay. When the other child asked for explanation, Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl likes another girl," according to the complaint.

A teacher who heard the remark scolded Marcus, telling him "gay" was a "bad word" and sending him to the principal's office. The following week, Marcus had to come to school early and repeatedly write: "I will never use the word `gay' in school again."

A phone message left for Lafayette Parish schools superintendent James Easton was not immediately returned.

The ACLU is demanding the case be removed from Marcus' file and that the school apologize to the boy and his mother, Sharon Huff.

"I was concerned when the assistant principal called and told me my son had said a word so bad that he didn't want to repeat it over the phone," Huff said. "But that was nothing compared to the shock I felt when my little boy came home and told me that his teacher had told him his family is a dirty word."

Is this school a religious one? If so, I don't think it's a case of the school being too PC.

If the kid brought in pictures of them in action, THEN they have something to complain about.

I've always been under the impression that the state of LA is religious because of breaking down the State into Counties, they have Parishs, which have a religious tone.

Louisiana is weird because of the French colonial influence. As for the word gay, I guess that means the Flintstones won't be shown in that school.

I think this story is illustrative of a bigger problem...PC-ness has gone so overboard now that people are just guessing at what might be widely condemned as inappropriate. Not sure? Discipline the kid anyway, it's the only way to be certain that no one gets offended. Hell, give it enough time and we'll all be communicating through a system of blinks.

I agree with you thoughts, but I do have hope. Most of these types of thigs are like a pendulum. A few decades back this area was way to the other side and racial slurs, etc. were accepted and commonly used. No we are in the overly sensitive phase. Hopefully in a few years we will reach the middle and some common sense. Yes I know I'm optimist.

Does this mean during this Christmas season we can't don our gay apparel?

Nope, you'll offend someone. Someone, somewhere, will change the song so we "don our homosexual apparel."

Eventhough "gay" meant "cheerful" or something to that effect in that context.

I'm still waiting for them to start asking to change the entire Flintstones TV theme because they can't have a gay old time anymore.
