Yep, I have odd ways of psyching myself into writing stuff. That and I am probably the only man alive that could get 2000 words plus out of a coming soon trailer.

Oh and it must have been good, (God knows I can never tell) cause I got my FIRSTever hate-mail. To whit:

From: Nathan (e-mail address deleted by me)
Subject: tenacious d

Allright,
Tenacious D is absolutely fucking awesome, and what you did was possibly the WORST rip off of them i have ever seen. It wasn't even close to funny. The majority of people have never heard the song Tribute, and therefore have NO fucking clue what you are trying to say.. it definately isn't funny unless you've heard the damn thing. So nice try, but i don't think that your little joke got "over" with the readers.
Dissapointed.

Well, maybe hate is too strong a word. But this is the most negative review that any of my columns have gotten. And I've said nice things about Billy Gunn in one of my columns!

For whatever reason, I often skip over X, where X is a random column on the site. But usually every day, I visit the forums, except for Politics, Test, Banished, and the sports. Anyway, Llakor's column would have likely been skipped like the rest of the columns, be they good or not-so, but it was all of the feedback posted here that got me to read it. So... yeah. The system works.

Well, then, If I might suggest Ubemonkeys that you check out DrOp's excellent ...and marking out columns which usually contain comic gems, but frequently don't get commented on on this forum.

In particular his medical column is worth checking out.

As his all time classic, brillant Chris Claremont column (even if Len Wein and Dave Cockum were the ones who reintroduced the X-Men in Giant Size X-Men#1 thus negating some of his points)

...and his last two columns have been very good as well, but went unnoticed (if by noticed you meant commented on on this board.)

I think this is why Z is always telling us to come over here and give some feedback after we read these columnists. I never miss a Llakor or BrewGuy or DrOp or Shocker, but I am remiss in that I only occaisionally post something about what I have read.

Bad pieman.

I hereby resolve to try to do better.

And read these guys, they are entertaing reads. Really. Really really.

Just and update, but Llakor STILL Rocks. That was a great column you wrote. The match description was amazing and really pulled me into the scene. And here I thought that the Heart Punch would have to be the lamest thing on earth. Ah well, you live and learn. But just in response to the column itself, I'd say that it isn't the amount of punching that is wrong (unless you just can't stand WWF style brawling), but the storytelling itself going on during the matches. From top to bottom all the matches on the cards these days seem to lack a certain amount of storytelling (RVD-Storm sure tried though). I think the first three recent examples of good storytelling that come to my mind right now are:

Jericho/Rock (No Mercy?) Everybody was hooked on the fact that out of this match would come a winner, a loser, a face, and a heel. And nobody had any idea who would end up as what.

Angle/Austin - Summerslam. Some people slammed it, but I certainly liked it. Angle's one of my favorite characters and my favorite wrestler. So now that he was a face I wanted him to kick Austin's ass. The man kicked out of three Stunners and STILL got screwed. This is one of the few times lately when the WWF can do something to make me mad... and not want to change the channel.

Austin/Benoit - (Before KOTR) Ten Rolling German Suplexes. Damn. The crowd called for them, and they got 'em. What was there not to love?

-And I thank you, you're out of sight

That was a great column you wrote. The match description was amazing and really pulled me into the scene. And here I thought that the Heart Punch would have to be the lamest thing on earth.

-Well, NOW it would be the lamest thing on the earth. Sean actually did an interview (with Slam I think) and the kiss-ass interviewer asked if he had thought of using the Heart-Punch as his finisher. And I lost such respect for Sean when he took the question seriously.

Ah well, you live and learn. But just in response to the column itself, I'd say that it isn't the amount of punching that is wrong (unless you just can't stand WWF style brawling), but the storytelling itself going on during the matches.

-My point would be I guess that the brawling style limits the kind of stories that you can tell. You couldn't do the Leo Burke story that I related in the WWF today.

-Face vs Face contest. Part of the drama is who is going to cheat first. This kind of match FORCES the wrestlers to use different kind of story-telling techniques. The novelty of that alone helps.

-Austin is the exception to everything.

Austin/Benoit - (Before KOTR) Ten Rolling German Suplexes. Damn. The crowd called for them, and they got 'em. What was there not to love?

-Was this the match from Calgary? This was a match that really benefitted from the use of Calgary's history (Stampede etc.) It's as close as any recent WWF match has ever gotten to the Atlantic Grand Prix matches of my youth.

I really loved the column. Damn, I think that's the first time I've seen Leo Burke's name in cyberspace.

I remember when Burke was making trips to Toronto in '83 and '84 as a heel. He was good at it. I marked out every time his weasely ass was beaten around the ring.

Now, about the crux of your article... I used to love wrestling the way it was, too. But it's forever changed.

Because it's openly fake, it's pretty much impossible to suspend disbelief. And because of the extreme wrestling of the last 10 years, psychology has given way to constant high spots.

There's no subtlety any more.

Thanks for sharing. You brought back some great memories.

Wow. Llakor's column was nothing short of brilliant. It's kind of easy (at least for me) to fall into the "super smart" smark mindset where you feel you know all there is to know about pro wrestling and you think you've seen it all. Of course, in reality all I truly know about is the modern era (Hulkamania and beyond, I've watched for 15 years and seen stuff from maybe 20 years worth of material on tape) and it was nice to see something addressing the time leading into "my era", and it reminded me of some of the little things I used to appreciate and seem to have utterly forgotten. It was great to be reminded and to cause me to make a comparison between the fans reactions then and the kind of de-sensitised fan reaction we are now all a part of. The column was an education for me to read, and I mean that as a compliment.

I'm not sure where I'm going here, so I'll just say "thanks". Llakor, I'd not read your column before but I'll certainly make sure I do in future. Really, really good stuff.

I really loved the column. Damn, I think that's the first time I've seen Leo Burke's name in cyberspace.

As it happens, my first ever column for /slash was called Leo Burke and the Three Heels. For more information on Leo Burke and other Canadian wrestlers the Canadian Wrestling Hall of Fame is always worth a visit.

I remember when Burke was making trips to Toronto in '83 and '84 as a heel. He was good at it. I marked out every time his weasely ass was beaten around the ring.

The thought of Leo as a heel is just so WRONG. (Oh Wait. Did you say Toronto? Silly me, Leo was still a baby-face, it was y'all that were heels.) I remember when Calgary Stampede was being shown on TSN after Atlantic Grand Prix was deed and buried, and Leo was involved in a feud with Owen Hart. At the time, Owen was the biggest baby-face in Calgary, heck in Canada. Except of course if you were watching in the Maritimes where Owen quickly became known as "that snot-nosed punk that Leo has to teach some respect to." The only man dumb enough to try to turn Leo heel in the Maritimes was Big Steven Petitpas who paired Leo with some young kid as part of a tag-team. The storyline was supposed to be the kid keeps screwing up, Leo gets more and more upset, finally culminating with Leo laying the kid out with a chair shot. When I saw a version of this there was a moment of stunned silence, and then someone from the very back of the community hall yelled, "Hit him again, Leo!" and when he did the crowd cheered (!) That was a heel turn that fell apart in a hurry.

Now, about the crux of your article... I used to love wrestling the way it was, too. But it's forever changed.

I refuse to accept that. Quick Sancho, my horse!

Because it's openly fake, it's pretty much impossible to suspend disbelief.

Plays and movies are openly fake, but the actors manage.

And because of the extreme wrestling of the last 10 years, psychology has given way to constant high spots.

Call me crazy, but I think that there's room for both. In fact, I think that there's room for psychologically sound high spots.

There's no subtlety any more.

I'm not sure that in wrestling, subtlety is a good thing. I'd settle for logic and consistency.

Good column, Llanor, but don't blame WWF. Blame the ECW fans morality and nWo for the overemphasis on brawling nowadays. If one has to fight three on one all the time, and the three are the top wrestlers promnotionally and in the locker room, you gotta bring weapons or someone else or you are going to get killed. The wrestlers are lucky that Hulk Hogan isn't a shoot or stiff wrestler; with his pop, he can get away with literally killing a wrestler in the ring, probably even cheered.

Good column,
-Thanks

Llanor,
-The official J210 incorrect spelling of my name is "Lankor"

but don't blame WWF.
-And why not?

Blame the ECW fans morality
-Now there's three words that you don't see in the same sentence very often. All ECW did IMHO was take the WWF style and push it to its logical extreme.

and nWo
-Who were supposed to be the WWF invading WCW if you remember.

for the overemphasis on brawling nowadays.
-My point, I guess was that the emphasis on brawling started a long time ago.

If one has to fight three on one all the time,
-...then one is a baby-face, beatdowns come with the turf. If you can't hack it, turn heel.

and the three are the top wrestlers promnotionally and in the locker room, you gotta bring weapons or someone else or you are going to get killed.
-Why Flair always had Arn Anderson.

The wrestlers are lucky that Hulk Hogan isn't a shoot or stiff wrestler; with his pop, he can get away with literally killing a wrestler in the ring, probably even cheered.
-I don't know, Saturn gets away with it, and he has virtually no heat (except from jobbers and smarks)
