Didn't Johnson and Nixon both go to Vietnam during the conflict?
Yeah, you're right. Gosh, I forgot all about that. Nixon went in '69 and Johnson made two trips. Johnson's were both to Cam Ranh Bay, one in 64 and the other in 67. Nixon's was to Saigon.
Other presidents visiting hot zones
Clinton went into Bosnia in '96 - I don't remember what the state of the war was then.
Bush, Sr didn't go into the gulf war, except to Saudi Arabia for a state visit, but did go to Somalia to visit the troops.
Ike, as mentioned, went to Korea as president-elect
FDR was all over the place during WWII - sicily in '43, for example. Morocco that same year.

And well try not to drive our Tanks over too many lawns OK?"
Oh, screw you. So our country prefers not to arm our police and create a culture of fear on every street. Excuse us for *GASP* being different to the great and powerful US of A.
And do your damn research. The money wasn't spent "giving our cops guns", it was spent blocking off parts of our capital city, changing flight paths, turning off mobile phones and laying on 14,000 extra officers for ONE MAN'S VISIT. | rockdotcom_2.0

Maybe you should do some research. Start by going to CNN.com and check the global geopolitical climate. My nation and yours are leaders in the Global War on Terrorism. Both of our nations are engaged in combat in a hostile country that we have occupied. Where soldiers (again of both our nations) are being killed by terrorists EVERY day. Your nations leaders invited my leader for an offical state visit to show our unity in said War on Terrorism. Is it too much to ask that we make sure that we take whatever measures neccessary to protect our leaders? Not just Bush, but Tony Blair and the Queen? I know youre not ignorant to the fact that a terrorist attack during Bush's visit could have been catastrophic. Would Al-quaeda have been deterred by the Queens silent guards and not tried to blow up the palace? And what if that reporter from that tabloid' who with little difficulty got himself a job in the palace with access to the Queen and the room where Bush would have slept? What if he had been a motivated Terrorist? What would you say to that?
You dont have to like Bush, I dont, but the Presidency of the United States is bigger than one man.

She was on the Today show this morning with another Senator who got to say very little (what a surprise.). Really had little new to say and said all the correct things re the troops. It was funny to hear her praise the troops with a straight face. Wonder how long she practised to look sincere. Wonder what Bill did for Thanksgiving? As a Liberal, I think we should be able to do better than heat sucking Hillary as a Liberal spokesman. | A-MOL

The question is, were the measures in place to stop an attack or to stop Bush from seeing that the protests against his visit. | Grimis

It was to prevent a confrontation between "W" and the rabble. Also to prevent a good tv shot of the rabble with Bush. But mostly he's the Prez and we must keep him as safe as possible. | | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
