They would have to be reeled in specifically (which happend with JFK, and we all know what happened there, so there may be reluctance to call the Secret Service's judgment into question). I know Clinton had a habit of stopping by sporting events with little advance warning, and the Secret Service would tow vehicles to make that possible. How would like to be leaving, only to find that your car had been towed for no other reason besides that the President decided to show up?

That'd be a perfectly reasonable explanation, but...
If this is a standard Secret Service thing, then why is this the first time we've heard about it? (He says, as he waits for the conservative wing of the board to screech "liberal media conspiracy".)
I'm not going to do deep research for you, but here's one link:

She talks about the Clinton thing (of course, she hammers Clinton, but I think it's more fair to use the car towing as an example of the lengths the Secret Service will go to in the name of protecting the President). I'm not making either story up.
As far as why you don't here about it more, my guess is that it because it is standard operation procedure, it's not news. Also, I think most take the Madame Manga view that whatever is necessary should be done, so most people don't think it's that big of a deal. Most others are just unaware, because it's not like most of us are ever close enough to the President to be affected by Secret Service protection.
I'm sure we were all really aware that the President doesn't plan his own security detail. Sure, if he gets wind of something he doesn't like, he can get it changed, but generally it's handled by the Secret Service and others. | CRZ

Perhaps that which is grudgingly accepted in the US is "news" in the UK? Or maybe people outside America are a lot less worried about reprecussions stemming from pissing off the Secret Service. ;-) | Nicolae Carpathia

Did you not read the article? It's not about the trees, it's about the memories. You can't buy them back.
Money doesn't even enter into the equation.
How stupid ARE they? This visit was all about reaffirming ties between close allies, you don't fly in and devestate the home of the people who are giving you shelter on said trip. That's just bad diplomacy.....-cough- | DrDirt

This isn't bad anything. You've got a barely tolerated royal family that makes Clinton's behavior look choir boyish in comparison. The queen wanted "W" and got him. Her staff and the security staff wern't terribly bright when they worked this out and I as an American am sorry. But at her age and with her strenuous repsonsibilities all she has to do is sit around and consider her memories and think about reasons to get pissed off.
How can you not know what a helicopter landing in an enclosed area would do to the shrubbery. I fell a Monty Python refernce coming on. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
