In very large numbers apparently, as the Ric Flair DVD set has sold out its entire first run in 2 days (411mania.com)

Considering that almost all the material on this is stuff prior to 1993, I would say that this wasn't exactly going to the same demographic as the latest Trish Stratus dvd. There may not be enough of us to get them to fire Nathan Jones, but I guess enough of us are out there to sell a bunch of dvds.

And, it was done with relatively little promotion within the programming. Compare it with the books that get shilled repeatedly or other DVD's (like Hogan's), and its amazing how well this is selling. For an example, I had to tell someone who was a Mid-Atlantic fan before DEAN or Pieman were born that the Flair and a cage match DVD with Magnum TA were out, despite the fact that this person still occassionally watches the current product.
But, as always, when confronted with obstacles, Flair yet again finds a way to overcome them.

Very encouraging news. Hopefully it shows Vince that there's still a market for wrestling.

It's the old WCW audience that didn't crossover when WCW died. Add to that the other old-time wrestling fans that dropped off in the past 20 years. Throw in the current fanbase. And you've got yourself a redhot DVD.

Perhaps now WWE will realize that if they can't hit this market with their current product, they can reach them through DVD's.

I imagine the Flair DVD was very cheap to produce too considering they didn't have to do any of the blurring. It was just a matter of selecting and pulling the footage.

It might rub some people the wrong way but I think they should do a DVD for guys like Rick Rude, Curt Hennig, and the Road Warriors. In a way, it's capitilizing on their death but I'm sure their fans would love to be able to remember these guys with a compilation of their greatest moments.

Just to play Devil's Advocate: Is it possible with business being down that the WWE/Sony didn't press as many copies this time around? The article doesn't exactly say how many copies were sold. Sounds kinda like a WWE press release, come to think of it.

If it was a WWF/E press release, it would have mentioned 1 sentence on Ric Flair, and 23 paragraphs on Mania XX coming on March 14th. All I know about the Flair DVD is that when I went into a store in the middle of the afternoon Tuesday, the next 3 people that came in did the same thing I did: Direct path to Flair DVD and into the checkout line. Considering I'm not in Flair Country, I think that shows this one is selling.

I kids of dig this idea. I figure, if the WWE gave a portion of the proceeds to a charity of the surviving family's choosing or to the family themselves, that would be 10x better.

All this proves one thing. Flair is still Da Man! Whoo!

You can add me to the list, I just ordered the DVD from Amazon a couple days ago for my big brother, the self proclaimed "fifth horseman". Fortunately, it has already been shipped so I made it under the wire there.

My big brother has been a big mark for Flair and the Horsemen since he was little, watching hours and hours of NWA Worldwide Wrestling every saturday afternoon. I was right there with him, since my sister never wanted me in her room, hehe. He loved Flair so much, he went and bought himself a REAL Rolex watch when he got older, and he won many a speech competition as well.

He "whoos" every single day of his life since then, and well, that makes it real easy for me to find the right Christmas gift for him every year. I'll have his verdict on the DVD when he's holed up in his room for a week finding all the easter eggs.

Well, I went to three Best Buys, and two different Suncoast Videos before I found one (the last one on the shelf) and was glad to pay the highway robbery price of $35 for my copy. I watched the 3rd DVD first, sinc that is a timeframe (royal rumble, his debut, etc) that I missed out on. I plan on watching the other two this week, when time permits.

So, it was sold out here in St Louis pretty much, and it took me 4 hours and about 1/2 a tank of gas to track one down.

Now, if they are smart enought to put together some Four Horsemen, Sting, and Dusty DVDs I will line up NOW to order them.

I'll bet that a Bret DVD would do pretty good numbers, too. Maybe not this good, but I'd buy it.

I bought my copy today. It was the last one at Media Play, and I was panicking because I couldnt find it, until I looked behind some MMA DVDs. I watched all of the first disc, most of the second and a lot of the extras on the third, but I didnt want to blow it all in one day.

I would also be interested in compilations of some of our fallen heroes, especially the Road Warriors and Owen Hart.

There's an interview with Randy Savage in the first issue of Smackdown magazine. If he's on decent terms with the WWE, a Best of Randy Savage DVD wouldn't be too much of a shock, and would sell to the exact same market as the Ric Flair DVD did.

Actually, with the tape library they have at their disposal, I don't think they'd ever run out of material.

You could get quite a few more volumes out of Flair - ditto the upcoming similar sets for Angle and Foley.

Then you've got current guys like Austin, Rock, Undertaker, HHH, Shawn Michaels (as awesome as the selection on From The Vault was, he's got tons more great stuff to pick from), Chris Jericho, The Dudley Boyz, Booker T, Rob Van Dam and Chris Benoit - each with a mountain of DVD-worthy matches in the bank.

Then, you've got all the past superstars like Savage, Bret, Owen, Hogan (again, there's plenty more), the Road Warriors, etc.

Then, you can expand upon the awesome Bloodbath steel cage comp, and put together the best of other sorts of matches. Ladder matches. Battle royals. Survivor Series elimination matches. The obligatory Hell In A Cell comp that you just know is coming eventually. Maybe one on weird gimmick matches in general (everything from the Elimination Chamber to Judy Bagwell On A Pole, although the latter should be an Easter Egg). You could do a comp of the bloodiest matches of all time (and you had two candidates at SurSer last week).

Also next year, they're supposed to do a look at the World title, which I imagine would stretch all the way back through the NWA, through WCW and into the WWE. That should be really cool, and I see no reason to stop there. Do one on the WWWF/WWF/WWE World Title. (Fill the extras with title changes.) You could do one (hell, more than one) on the Intercontinental belt, the US Belt, the WWE Tag Belts, the old WCW Tag Belts, the ECW World Title Belt, the Cruiserweight title belt - even the Womens Title Belt.

Then, they're way past due for another Best of RAW, not to mention a few Best of Smackdown discs. They could even do a Best of Nitro, since they seem to be realizing that WCW material sells.

Then, you can look at pay-per-views. How about the best of Summerslam? Or Starrcade? Or Halloween Havoc? Or Survivor Series? Or November To Remember?

(Wrestlemania, of course, deserves a whopping 20 special editions - each a two disc set with the show uncut on disc 1, and a bunch of stuff from free TV that set the shows up. Wrestlemania III, for example, could have the series of Piper's Pits that led to the Andre/Hogan feud, the SNME battle royal with Hogan and Andre, one of the Andre v. 3 jobbers squash matches they did around that time, the Savage/Steamboat injury angle, the George Steele-Randy Savage match where Steamboat returned, Danny Davis costing the Bulldogs the tag titles and Santana the IC title, the set-up to the Piper/Adonis feud and the Roddy Piper "My Way" video from SNME. Not to mention stuff to set up the other matches that are slipping my mind at the moment. You could probably skip over the Billy Jack Hayes and Hercules Hernadez war over the full nelson, though.)

I don't know if I speak for everyone, but I know I'd buy every single thing I just mentioned.

I don't know of any DVD that will match these numbers, but if they released a Bret Hart DVD in Canada the same day they released it in the US I think you'd see a very similar reaction to the one that StaggerLee says the Flair comp received in St. Louis.

Hey, I miss the good old days when you could feud over who had the better full nelson, Olympus or... OREGON!!

Fortunately, SD:HCTP has an awesome full nelson. And a solid enough CAW that I can find out for sure. This is going to be one hell of a best of 7.

Meantime I'd buy a best of Bret, Steamboat, Benoit, maybe a look back at the WCW Luchas, complete with Tenay's feature, (say it with me) "Lucha Libre and teh Mexican Luchadors!"

All the usual smark suspects.

Of course, I'd buy a DVD that featured every Waylon Mercy segment ever aired.

For those of you on backorder, try www.cduniverse.com

Mine was shipped ASAP. Yes, I had to pay US funds, but in this case it'll be worth it once it crosses border patrol.
