Did anybody else see Smallville last night? That was possibly the greatest episode of any show I've ever seen.

Here's a spoilerific summary:

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read

Remember how Chloe & Lex were both investigating Lionel Luthor? Chloe wanted out of her deal with Lionel (without getting her dad fired) and Lex just thinks his dad's a jerk. Well, turns out that they found out that Lionel & his old friend Morgan Edge (from Exodus & Phoenix) burnt down Lex's grandparents' house back in "the day" and split the insurance money. Sounds like Lex has his father right where he wants him, right? WRONG. Turns out that Dr. Foster (Lex's new shrink) and the mansion staff have been doping Lex up for months so that if/when he eventually found out, nobody'd believe him since he'd seem CRAZY. So, Lex goes to Clark (who gets Chloe & Lana to help). Chloe & Clark go to find evidence while Lana stays with Lex at the stables. Lex finally loses it, wigs out and shoves Lana into a horse, who tramples her. Lex goes and finds Morgan Edge (as does Clark, seperately) and confronts him. Edge beats up Clark (with some Kryptonite), so Lex shoots him and nearly shoots Clark before realizing that Edge is getting away, so he runs out and shoots Edge a LOT as he's driving off (meaning he's probably dead this time). Edge's car careens towards Lex, but Clark shoves him outta the way and the car hits him...and Lex sees it all. Clark speeds off just as Dr. Foster and a bunch of people from the sanitarium show up and cart Lex off. At the sanitarium, Lionel bemoans having to drug his son and keep him in the looney bin while at the hospital, Lana's recovering but realizs that Clark was right when he said being around him was dangerous and tells Clark that she has to stay away from him. A sweet-ass Johnny Cash song played at the end while Lionel gazed sadly at Lex and Clark gazed sadly at Lana.

Overall, AWESOME episode. For once, a TV show that boasted that one episode would change everything actually delivered. Are you listening, Vince??

I agree, a solid episode to be certain. And I feel I was owed one, after that hideous time-lapse/flashback episode with Smallville back in'63 or whenever it was supposed to be. Every time Clark touched a mailbox or a doorknob he'd see a five-minutes sequence. I kept waiting for him to come out of it and for everyone else to be gone.

"Clark, that was 3O years ago!"

I'll also agree...good episode. Is this the incident that pushes Lex over the edge into villany/hatred?

I didn't mind the Smallville '63 episode, so much as the next episode where they reverted to the "villain of the week" formula with Magnet Boy or whatever the hell he was supposed to be.

I'm looking forward to the next set of new episodes eagerly.

The ending song was Johnny Cash covering "Hurt" if I recall correctly. Good stuff, but between this, Survivor, and ER what a depressing TV week. Good, mind you, but just episodes that left you very down.

Lex has always IMO been the reason to watch Smallville. It's more about his journey than Clark's rather straight forward path to being Superman.

I always knew Lionel couldn't be trusted. ANYONE who remembers Brimstone knows he's the prince of lies.

Well, Miles Millar & Al Gough (the creators) were quoted in Wizard (and several other publications) that this season is all about consequences, whereas the first & second seasons were about "Who am I?" and "Where do I come from?" respectively.

And Lex Luthor's always been a more compelling character than Superman. I mean...he's a guy who makes a conscious decision in the modern DCU to do evil things, so the real cool journey is how he goes from being the guy who tried to manipulate Lana into dumping Whitney for being the guy who tried to kill Superman on numerous occations.
