Taken from 411 who took it from 1wrestling.

I don't know how much truth is in this, but it seems odd that a Raw writer is even at Smackdown or contributing ideas. I guess with Smackdown's recent creative downturn they were looking for fresh ideas?

*****************************************************
Some controversy broke out backstage at the Smackdown taping last night involving RAW brand writer Michael Hayes.

Hayes lobbied throughout the day yesterday to have John Cena FU Chris Benoit at the end of their tag team match last night at the Smackdown taping (which did happen). Word backstage is that nobody wanted this angle to happen except for Hayes who thought that he could make John Cena into a modern day version of the original "Stone Cold" Steve Austin character by having him turn on people in a surprising manner and not trust anyone.

WWE went into the taping thinking that Cena could be one of their top faces for the future, but the decision to have him hit the FU on Benoit left fans confused more than anything else. Hayes had to meet with Vince McMahon late last night to get the idea passed, and even then, word is that he had told Vince the entire lockerroom was in favor of the move when it wasn't. Afterwards, Hayes told everyone that Vince wanted the angle done like that but nobody believed him.

This has turned much of the lockerroom against Hayes and has led to many questioning his wrestling knowledge. Many also find it odd that a RAW brand writer would push so hard to seemingly halt the progress of a rising Smackdown star.

It remains to be seen if WWE edits out the Cena FU on Benoit when Smackdown airs this Thursday.

I find it hard to believe that Vince would care that the locker room thinks of this angle or that. Sure, he wants to keep the locker room happy, but I can't believe any decent promoter would run angles by non-participants, let alone Vince.

I think having Cena FU Benoit at the end of the show is the right thing to do, and I agree with Hayes' philosophy. The key to getting Cena over as a top face isn't going to be having him to typical face things, because that's not why people started getting into his character in the first place. Trying to recreate Stone Cold is a bad idea, but the process is the right one. All they have to do to keep Cena as the face ie. the guy getting cheered is pair him opposite the top heels most of the time. Feud him with Lesnar and Show and he'll be a face. Feud him with Lesnar one week then Benoit the next, Show the next and Angle the week after that and you'll confuse people.

Don't forget...Austin was two years into his face run before he showed any conventional babyface side to his character. His character didn't change by turning face, but his opponents did and that solidified him as a good guy without having to tweak a winning formula. They need to keep up the same with Cena, otherwise he could turn into a goofy Angle-esque face and lose a lot of his momentum.

After reading all of that it seems to me that it would totally confuse the common fan to watch Cena wrestle and win with Benoit, then FU him. Even to me it looks, smell, and seems a bit fishy. It could work out though because you could wind it in a faboulos story of finding out that's how Cena shows you his respect or some kind of wierd realated wrestling fedish for him being "Austin" type face. Once again, only time would tell, we'll see if it's on Smackdown this Thrusday.

This does sort of remind me of rapidly getting the crowd behind him Eddie kicking the crap out of Tajiri for no real reason

Well, isn't the point still about whether or not the faces can TRUST Cena or not? Him attacking Benoit just means that he's still a tweener more or less and would get people to want to watch the PPV to see if turns or not fully.

I think the idea makes sense.

No, it doesn't make sense. Why would Cena tag with Benoit if he's going to FU him? Why would Benoit tag with Cena? Why would they let Cena be their last member of their team? Sure John Cena doesn't need to do babyface type things but attacking Benoit for absolutely no reason makes no sense. Eddie attacking Tajiri isn't the same thing. Tajiri messed up Eddie's car AND cost him the tag titles, that's a reason for attacking him. But Cena? He's like "oh well, i'll attack Benoit" That's just stupid. And all you need as proof that it's more confusing than anything is the crowd's reaction for the match. Afterwards all the fans present were confused.

Now if he used Benoit, ANgle etc to get the best of Brock's team and then just disposed of them afterwards then maybe that makes some sense. But attacking Benoit makes now makes no sense because A) why should they trust him on the team now and B) he needs Benoit healthy to compete in the Survivor Series match.

That's assuming Cena is the 5th member of Angle's team, I haven't read any spoilers yet.

I think it makes some sense, in that a couple of weeks ago, when they were figuring out Lesner's team, A-Train (I think) mentioned to Cena that he might be asked to join, and Cena responded something like "Whatever", as if he didn't care.

Promoting Cena as just being out for himself and fighting "personal", rather than team feuds may be a good idea. Worked for Eddie - he hasn't been portrayed as an altar boy, either, and the fans have been going nuts for him.

What confuses me is where's the motivation to go against Benoit? I can't think of a back-story there. I know Benoit has been used lately to promote guys, but gimme a reason like Queezy said.

As I understand it, earlier in the night, Benoit had been badmouthing Cena to Kurt saying that Angle shouldn't add Cena to Team Angle. Both have issues with members of Team Lesner (in this case Brock and Big Show). However, once the match is over and his mission is accomplished, Cena has free range to punk out Benoit for being such a whiny bitch about him. That actually makes sense to me.

From the same column by Scherer:-

"The end result was that after the spot aired last night, the crowd sat there in a shocked silence, and it wasn’t good. It was a “You confused us with Cena and buried Benoit” kind of silence, which is really bad for the product. Hopefully, it will be edited off the final broadcast."

It's very odd that was reported by Scherer, especially when you consider that someone who attended the taping said that the crowd actually popped for the FU post-match and Cena received a large reaction. The "stunned silence" comment is completely inaccurate. I'm surprised people still find credence in anything reported on that website, but that's an entirely different thread.

My only problem would be if they are actively trying to recreate Austin with Cena. They have to realize they drew an inside straight to pull of the Austin run, with the marketplace and economy being in just the right position. And remember, last time Vince thought he could recreate a past star with someone else, we got the Lex Express.

It's that whole 'lightning in a bottle' mentality that Vince seems to have. If something's tried and tested, he rarely deviates from it. Just look at how many hosses he's signed in recent years. They've been signed because Vince believes that's the miracle cure to his problems, even though it's always been the actual personalities that develop that make him money.

I don't know where Scherer's getting his information from, but the Meadowlands tends to come across as a quiet arena on tv. I don't know if its because the crowd is poorly miked or if whenever I went there I was sitting in the only noisy section, but everytime I would go to a show, I would hear the crowd pop for stuff only to come home and read about how quiet the crowd was (and how that subsequently ruined the show.) If Scherer is getting his info from the Smackdown feed (if they still do that... or did they stop a while ago?), then I could see how someone in attendance might say it drew a pop while Scherer claims it drew silence. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if two people were there live, and just by being in different parts of the arena heard different reactions to the same event.

I'm more impressed though that Scherer was able to translate silence as the crowd being upset that Cena's FU "buried" Benoit.

All the *Good Guys* should not all be good people. There are pleanty of assholes in the world that are liked.

I also find it hard to believe that the entire locker room was so passionate about what the writers did with John Cena. It sounds more like a few net reporters are trying to get their story over a little more.

Regardless it's a ballsy call. The WWE has been lacking those as of late.

Maybe if Smackdown didn't flip-flop faces & heels, things could be a bit clearer ... I understand that there has to be a gray area at times, but, damnit, I've said it before and I'll say it again, they turn people too quick & too often!

Interesting. Who's turned in the past two to three months? Tajiri's had a heel turn and now the face turn by Cena. I guess we had the Lesnar and Rhyno turns, but that was pre-SummerSlam. The Haas and Benjamin face turn seems to be in limbo at the moment. I must be missing others, because that doesn't seem like too many to me.

Perhaps I should have been a bit clearer ... I understand that there must be face/heel turns in order to keep things interesting ... it just appears that in the past 10 to 12 months, people are turned too often ... Angle, Lesnar, Rhyno, Eddie, Tajiri, Noble are the ones that come to mind. And now we have the pending turns of Cena, Chavo and WGTT.

It just doesn't mean as much anymore when people turn every 6 months.
