HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Art Carney, who played Jackie Gleason's sewer worker pal Ed Norton in the TV classic "The Honeymooners" and went on to win the 1974 Oscar for best actor in "Harry and Tonto," has died at 85.

Carney died in Chester, Conn., on Sunday. He had been ill for some time.

Art definitely plays an important role in television history, and I feel for his family... but good Lord if someone had bet me everything I owned on Saturday that he was still alive I'd be sleeping naked in a refrigerator box right now.

I'm also stunned he was ONLY 85. He looked close to that in the Mt. St. Helen movie, and that was 20 years ago.

I'm right now rehearsing for Odd Couple, which he helped debut on Broadway, I believe.

Gleason was a comedy monster, but Carney was a perfect foil. Just As lively a physical comedian and as rubbery as Jim Carrey or Steve Martin or Martin Short.

I agree with Barbwire. Many times over the years I could have sworn Art Carney was dead, and lo and behold he would show up at an awards show somewhere. What a long and blessed life. May God bless his family.

Somewhere up in heaven, a brand-new angel is taking FOREVER to pick up his halo, and Jackie Gleason is standing right behind him, ready to scream "WILL YOU JUST PUT IT ON ALREADY?"

It really amazes me how The Honeymooners still make me have laugh out loud moments. I usually find old shows (especially B/W shows) don't hold up well for me.

Anyone happened upon those Jackie Gleason Show HM skits recently? I'd never seen them in my life, then the last three weeks or so I'd run across one channel-surfing and leave it there for a few minutes. Terrifyingly unfunny but suddenly I'm sort of happy I stumbled upon them and didn't immediately move on.

I think it's the We show Touched By an Angel and MASH network.

Ahhhhh, that's too bad. Art was hilarious.

I was planning on buying this for Christmas anyways, but now it's at the top of my list.

"Now address the ball."

"Helllloooooo ball!"
