So, during my weeks off, I picked up the highly anticipated Wolves of the Calla by Stephen King. This is a book I have waited for for at least 12 years. Why twelve years? Well, between The Waste Lands and today, King released Wizard and Glass and dubbed it the 4th book in the series. I'd look at Wizard and Glass as a kind of side story. All but about 75 pages focused on Roland's past. I was disappointed when it came out. At least we got to find out how the ka-tet escaped from Blaine. Apart from that nothing really happened.
So, as I tore into Wolves, one thing became perfectly clear. This book owned me. 2 days later and I was finished. The ending was absolutely crazy and I need to talk about it with people. So...here comes spoilers. Be warned!
Spoiler #1) The Wolves. Seeing their picture about half way through, I thought "hmm, these guys kind of look like Dr. Doom with masks on". Seeing that Eddie and Jake picked this up too made me shriek. Especially when Eddie said their "shock-sticks" were actually light sabers from the Star Wars movies Jake never got to see. The Sneetches from Harry Potter were a nice touch. The description of them shredding people was sweet.
Spoiler #2) The Doorway Cave. Roland sees a book that chills him to the bone before the final scene where Callahan finds out his life is fictional. Was this book "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" by Robert Browning? The reason I ask is because Callahan finds 'Salems Lot by King. Could all the characters be figments of imagination? This leads me to spoiler #3...
Spoiler #3) The Crimson King. Is the Crimson King going to turn out to be Stephen King? A lot is made of name coincidences in Mid-World (Calvin Tower, Callahan, etc.). This just seems too good to be true.
There you have it. What do you guys think? I need to talk about this book badly and no one else that I know has had the time to read it.
