Torn quadriceps sidelines rookie QB
ESPN.com news services

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens rookie quarterback Kyle Boller likely will miss the rest of the season with a leg injury.

Boller tore his left quadriceps in the first half of Sunday's loss to the St. Louis Rams. The injury could require surgery, although even in a best-case scenario he will be sidelined for at least six weeks.

He was on crutches at the Ravens' training complex Monday. He did not talk to the media, but obviously was downcast over the development.

"I'm sure he's very emotionally distraught right now," Ravens coach Brian Billick said.

There is a chance Boller could return in late December, although Billick said there's also a chance the quarterback will be placed on injured reserve as soon as Tuesday, sidelining him until next year.

The injury occurred in the second quarter of the Ravens' 33-22 loss, either when Boller banged knees with Baltimore fullback Alan Ricard or upon being hit while rolling toward the sideline.

"I don't even really remember the exact play," Boller said Sunday night.

Boller finished the half, but was replaced by Chris Redman at the start of the third quarter. Redman will start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, Billick said.

Playing in a regular-season game for the first time in 13 months, Redman struggled mightily against the Rams. He went 7-for-12 for 58 yards, threw two interceptions and fumbled twice.

"It was one of those times where everyone was already juiced up, and I was just trying to get juiced up," he said Monday. "Anytime you get the opportunity, you have to make the best of it. I kind of missed one last night."

Wait, the Ravens offense employs a quarterback? A week sooner though, and Rob Johnson still would have been available to dazzle the Ravens in practice.

Hey, can revive that thread where we kept naming obscure QBs for Denver, except now using Baltimore?

I empathize, brutha. We're getting our starter back next week (hopefully). Against the suddenly-rejuvenated Chargers. Fack.

This, combined with all the momentum about to come this week from the upset of the Chiefs will end up meaning one thing...the Bengals ARE going to win that division this year.

You're telling me. I just picked up the sonuvabitch to replace Drew Brees in my fantasy league. (Hey, Aaron Brooks had a bye, OK?)

It's been that kind of year for the Natural Born Thrillers...3-7, bottom of the Outagamie Co. Division, and riding a 3-game losing streak. Ack.

Think about this though; there is serious debate about letting Anthony Wright jump from # 3 to starter this week against Miami.

I hope Jamal can handle 50+ carries a game...

I was actually just thinking the same thing.

All the Ravens really need is just a tackling dummy that can hand the ball off to Jamal.

Ray Lucas? My god, was David Klingler to busy to take a phone call? Hell, I'm surprised Billick didn't try to dig up Randall Cunningham before he went this far in the dreg pile.

That shows you how bad Chris Redman is at Quarterback.

I saw Billick on TV, and at that time he had NOT ruled this out....

Of course, with Ray Lucas at QB, we would've been better with our punter, Dave Zastudil, who was a QB in High School.

The worst part? With Jamal and our defense, we still have a chance in every game...

Miami had Ricky Williams and a defense and Ray Lucas still screwed them up.

I wonder why they didn't get Neil O'Donnell. One of my local sportcasters reported that he was going to have a tryout with the Ravens earlier this week. I think he would have been a good pick-up ... he saved the Titans' asses on more than one occasion.

Who knows, maybe he was a bit too rusty during the workout session.

I was hoping for O'Donnell too, since he went to Maryland. I'm pretty sure he didn't work out though; Lucas got a call, not a tryout.

I think the reason is the fact that they were not looking for a starter, but a warm body to occupy the 3rd string role. If they knew, before signing Lucas, that Boller would be back possibly within four weeks, that could have played into the decision. Why spend money(perhaps cap room that wasn't their) on O'Donnell when you can cut Lucas for cheaper later.

Am I the only one that thinks this is going to be the straw that causes Lewis to get injured bad enough to be sidelined?

Wasn't last week the first time he was active in practice?

If he's not taking handoffs in practice, I wonder if that will mean muffed plays come gametime. You would think that a new QB would need to work with him a bit to get a rhythm but maybe you can just plug in anyone and hand the ball off. I guess it's not rocket science.

Still, I'm looking at Lewis' backup in my fantasy league right now.
