It wasn't the best fight ever and it certainly didn't go how I expected it too but it was still a pretty impressive feat by Roy Jones to win Saturday night. I think Tarver is going to make himself crazy when he sees how much he just stood around and did nothing. If he had been more active he likely would havewon the fight, but he waited for Jones to back into the corner too many times. I thought Roy won eight rounds to four. Too many of Tarver's punches when Roy was in the corner were on Roy's gloves or arms.

I think Roy would win a rematch easily if it was his next fight and he didn't let himself get too big between the fights. He even looked tired (almost sick) in the prefight interview he did in the locker room.

I totally agree that Jones won the fight, but I also agree with those who suggest he was in more trouble than ever before.

When Tarver had him on the ropes in the early rounds, he was landing some huge punches in those flurries, especially the straight rights he threaded through Roy's guard. But by the end of the fight, even when he flurried in the corner, the punches didn't have nearly the same power to them. If they had, he might have even knocked RJ out.

All said and done, though, Roy knew what he had to do and he did it. Hopefully there won't be any more questions about his heart.

A Tarver/Jones rematch with Roy at a stable 175 ends badly for Tarver; but I don't think you'll ever see Roy stabilize at 175 again. Tarver should clean out the light-heavy division and then meet Toney (at light-heavy or cruiser, I don't care). I'd pay to see that fight for sure.

And boy oh boy oh boy, Tarver can run his mouth with the best of them; and he's got the best "deluded boxer" character in years. "I took it to the man; I won the fight." Erm. You can make the best shit sandwich in town; it's still a shit sandwich. I agree that he's going to be stupefied by his own lack of action from the 6th round on. Or at least he should be.

Tarver looked good, for a time, but he just kept shutting down. Whenever Jones wanted him, he had him, as evidenced by the beating he was taking in the final 2 rounds. I could not believe how he just could not stop running his mouth post fight.... I was not impressed with the corner flurries either- it was clear that even given those Jones won the fight. It was very funny seeing Tarver stick his foot in his mouth- and no one really agreeing with him.

Jones does need to quit the weight roller coaster though. He looked BAD this fight, and he looked almost withered and sickly at the end of the fight. This can't do anything for him besides shorten his career- and have him risk a real upset that would tarnish his reputation....

I think his reputation is already tarnished. He won the heavyweight title, then gave it up. Just walked away. This is the same kind of shit that has haunted Lennox Lewis. What was the point?

The point was that he became the first middleweight champion to ever successfully win a heavyweight title belt. He had said going into it that he was only fighting one fight at heavyweight. He never said he was trying to become the undisputed heavyweight champion.

I don't think anyone had gone up from light-heavyweight to win a heavyweight title and gone back down to light-heavyweight and regained that title. Roy did that too.

What reputation could he have possibly tarnished? Is he still the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world? Yes. I'd like to see De La Hoya go fight at 140 or Arturo Gatti go back down to 130 and give a better account for themselves than Roy did against Tarver. He went in there against the BEST 175-lb. fighter (not named Roy Jones) and had the man so frozen that he could not take advantage of Roy's obviously weaker physical condition. He had Roy in the corner but he never had Roy hurt from punches. If Roy could make himself a healthier 175 he would destroy Tarver.

How exactly is the Lewis comparison a valid one? Lewis trained sloppily for a couple of title defenses against big punchers and he lost. Jones has never been in such trouble. He has always taken his preparation very seriously and easily outclassed everyone he's ever fought. In spite of what Bernard Hopkins and Tarver say, Roy has never ducked anyone that I can name (though neither has Lewis that I can think of).

You could say he's ducked Dariusz Michel-whatshisname, but that was out of a legit concern over biased judging. Then again, given how Dariusz got whipped a while back, it's a foregone conclusion that Roy would've made judging a non-factor with an early KO

This is all leading to Jones/Tyson, and I would love to see it. Tyson gets to pay off some debts with his payday (and perhaps hire a psychiatrist), and Jones can prove his worth against perhaps the only other guy who can guarantee a big buyrate.

So, in typical early IWC booking, I give it to Jones in 9 rounds.

JayJay is right. No one in history has ever made that jump to hvywt, became champ then went back down to 175 to beat the top guy. I don't know why anyone would want to. Roy should have made Tarver move up in weight. Now he would really be stupid to go back up and fight Tyson.

It was hard enough just getting up to 193 the 1st time I'm sure. Losing/Gaining 20+ lbs of muscle is very difficult. He should get used to 175 again and beat Tarver's ass. After that, what else is it to prove? Just retire as one of the greatest P4P fighters ever.

He is not that quick at 190+ but he has proven to have a good chin so he probably could beat Tyson now. But no one in history could have beaten the old Tyson so what's the point. Then again, it could be bigger than Tyson/Lewis. If he wasn't already "Roy Jones Jr." then it would be an excellent idea.

Actually, I think the WBA allowed him to keep the heavyweight title. Aside from a few vague news stories though, I can't find anything that says he gave it up...

I never understood why Roy didn't insist the fight be at 190. Even if it's not for the belts, the belts don't really mean that much anymore. You're fighting for the title of "best pound for pound boxer in the world today," which I think Tarver would value more than the L.H. belts.

Right now Roy belongs in the Cruiserweight division. The fight I want to see him vs. Toney at 190. Barring that, him vs. Lennox Lewis at Heavyweight. Him vs. Tyson in a gimmick fight is stupid, and I don't think it's even going to draw that much money.
