SIGH- when did the art of political cartoons change from Biting political satire to overtly biased, pro-liberal, Republicans suck suck suck pictures?

This guy and Tom Toles, I swear. Personally, I can take jokes aimed at Republicans in stride, but things like this are so hateful. And you NEVER see people like this poking at the mistakes in their own party.

Just not funny. Frankly I am getting sick of seeing it. No longer is it two parties comprised of Americans who disagree on things- it is two parties who feel the OTHER is un-American, and wrong in utterly everything they do. Crap like this is part of the reason for that...

So why isn't this "Tom Tomorrow" enlisting? Maybe he has carpel tunnel in his drawing hand? I think it is a tad hypocritical for a political commentator (cartoons) to be bashing another political commentator like this...

"I'm waging war on Ultra-right wing nazis in my cartoon! This Bush speech is perfect! I can draw Bush in a flight suit standing next to General Clark! Screw truth and context, we have a president's caracter to assasinate!"

Evidently you didn't read This Modern World during the Clinton administrations. Tomorrow came up with the Clinton-as-a-waffle before Trudeau did in "Doonesbury." (Seriously, check out the online cartoon archive. You'll be surprised at tidbits like this one.)

So why isn't this "Tom Tomorrow" enlisting?

Because, unlike the chickenhawks he portrays in this strip, he's not one of those who thinks "waging war on the Islamofascists" is a good idea?

Perhaps I will check out the archives... It will be interesting to see if he is as insulting when he is poking at the left.

As far as the "chickenhawks" comment- I fail to understand why you MUST be in the military, in the eyes of liberals, to have a pro-war position. Why is that? One major facet of our form of government is the concept of civilian authority over military action. If you had to belong to the military to have an opinion on its use, doesn't that negate that whole idea?

So this "Drudge" parody does not belong to the military. However, he does pay taxes, and those tax dollars help pay for, and equip that soldier. He has every right to express an opinion, for or against, regarding the use of the military force he partially owns.

It is like saying I cannot have an opinion on where to build a freeway, because I do not construct them. Totally ridiculous, and completely ignorant, but a convienient way for anti-war folks to attempt to discredit pro-war folks. As this cartoon clearly demonstrates.

Jeezum crow, are we reading the same comic? Read it again - read the words he's using and not the words you're imagining. He's making fun of STUPID BLOGGERS WHO ARE STUPID

And he's RIGHT

My opinion: you REALLY have to want to read into things to not find this funny.

I dunno. Around the time I started hallucinating that Grimis had a comic mocking gun control people in his signature?

I will admit I have seen some right-wing cartoons that are equally as guilty of being totally biased and uninformed.

Maybe when I look at "historical" political cartoons, I see a great deal more cleverness and neutrality in the digs. The vast majority of cartoons I see today are much less insiteful, and far more insulting. Maybe it is the eye of history, but maybe it is representative of the political climate of today, which, due largely to the overabundance of media, really has very little basis in fact. It just gets a little tiresome having to listen to empty arguments over and over...

I would be more in agreement with you if I weren't just looking at some Nast cartoons last night, and noticed that he seemed to have no aversion to depicting people he disagreed with as (insert Church Lady voice)....SATAN~!

It isn't the fact that the "Chickenhawks" are pro-war that's upsetting. I definitely agree with you about the civilian control over militart, and not needing to be a former military to be pro-war. It's two things:

1) It's the fact these are the people who seem to feel that they need to paint anti-war people as un-american, or cowardly, or treacherous. And, hey if I were anti-war I might take that from someone who's put their ass where their mouth is. But I'll be Goddamned if I'll take it from a draft-dodger.

2) These folks come off as thinking the war is one big video game or action movie, without recognizing the human costs. This may or may not be true. I definitely understand the arguement that a few deaths now prevent many more later, whether or not it's true, it's a valid arguemnt. But Rummy, Jr., and the like's attitude seems to be almost that they're playing a huge game, and that the reason for going to war is really just to show that they've got big dicks. It's the lack of gravitas shown by the administration that troubles people, and the fact that decisions to do something like go to war are made so emotionally and almost flippantly troubles people. And many folks think that the fact that the people making these decisions don't have first-hand experience with war contributes greatly to this.

In his acceptance speech on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Rabin spoke of "the terrifying silence of the moment before," the moment just after taking the decision to conduct a military operation, "the moment you grasp that as a result of the decision just made, people might go to their deaths. People from my nation, people from other nations. And they still don't know it. At that hour, they are still laughing and weeping, still weaving plans and dreaming about love, still musing about planting a garden or building a house and they have no idea these are their last hours on earth.... In that moment of great tension, just before the finger pulls the trigger, just before the fuse begins to burn, in the terrible quiet of that moment, there is still time to wonder, to wonder alone: Is it really impossible to act? Is there no other choice? No other way?"

It the fact that many anti-war folks believe that the administration never came close to a reflection like this, and that's what drives a lot of the anti-war sentiment, not the fact that the people in the administration never went to war. But perhaps the fact that they were never actually in the position of the people that might go to their deaths, as Rabin was, is as factor for this.

I would imagine because Republicans draw(drew) boring and unfunny cartoons. They tried, people didn't laugh, so now we're stuck with this because the newspaper of TODAY wants FUNNY cartoonists on their pages.

...but at least it's funny!

FWIW, I'm still on Tom's side on this one. He tried to be reasoned AND reasonable with his responses...at least the first two times. When I had to talk to people who had issues with the WrestleLine/WrestleManiacs Nitro report, I usually gave up by the third go round just like Tom did, so I can sympathize.

Er, never.

Go over to Slate's Daily Political Cartoon archives. It's a pretty fair spread of political cartoons from across the country, and conservative and liberal views are equally represented - if anything the Democratic party frequently takes it harder than George Bush does.

Oh. My. God.

I honestly don't think I've seen such a broad-based, bipartisan collection of twits in my LIFE. I think I've just decided to swear off political involvement FOREVER because of these asshats. Special thanks go to such fine specimens as Reid:

I'm sick and tired of you know-nothing left-wingnuts spewing this vile hateful anti-American bullshit. Why don't you move if you hate your country so much?

Wonder if he got the memo that "if you hate America so much, why don't you leave" became pass precisely twenty-seven days ago. Although that's not as funny as the assclowns who were offended that Tom Tomorrow would DARE to publish a comic such as this that pisses all OVER veterans (ed: it really doesn't, but what-eva) on Veteran's Day. Look, dipshits, the thing that's great about this country is that he can express his opinion and you can express yours, no matter how wrong one may be (and you even get to decide which is which!). There are some things which probably shouldn't be printed. This isn't even CLOSE to the line.

I'm reminded reading the Grimis cartoon of a line from "Yes Prime Minister"

Sir Humphrey Applebee: "Plays attacking the government are the second most boring things written."
Jim Hacker: "What are the most boring?"
SHA: "Plays praising the government."

The above cartoon just made Joseph Ryder look prescient and quite accurate in his comments :)
