Um, I'm pretty sure all those dead people in Southeast Asia, Africa, Central and South America would dispute that if they could. But they can't, because they got killed as pawns in the pissing contest.

Or did you think people living in the Third World were happy with their military dictatorships and civil wars and invasions and death squads?

First Stagger Lee is right. We need troops strategically placed to deploy within 24 hours.

Gavintzu, no one disagrees. The point is that overall the world was more stable during the Cold War, not necessarily better. Since the fall of the USSR, I think the numbers dead is pretty expansive also. We still have pissing contests but we are now dealing with oissers more fanatic than the USSR ever was. All those Third World problems still exist and are as active as ever.

Yeah, what he said. Gov'ts always kill people, and haven't stopped. I'm sure those people would have been killed anyone, and I don't mean that in a dismissive, prickish way. I honestly believe this gov't (the U.S. Gov't) would kill other people from other countries for whatever reason. We've installed gov'ts before. And that's just from the information I've been able to gather, other gov'ts do it as well. It's not right, but what can we do? It's a two-party system, and both of them like to kill people.

We in North America and most of Europe are secure in our personal safety. In reality, that's a very recent occurence. The masses have always been expendable pawns throughout history. At least, progress is being made and we and other democracies are attempting to make the world a safer place. Unfortunately, we must first undo all the damage we "civilized" countries did over the last 250+ years in Asia and Africa.
