I realize that in two days, all should be revealed. But as I was watching The Matrix tonight I had some interesting thoughts, most of them steming from Agent Smith's conversation with Morpheus towards the end.

I must get out of here, I must get free, and in this mind is the key, my key. Once Zion is destroyed, there's no need for me to be here, don't you understand? I need the codes, I have to get inside Zion, and you have to tell me how. You're going to tell me, or you're going to die.

Now didn't Smith do just that in Reloaded? He got out of the Matrix. He got into Zion. We all thought he was just a really weird Agent (and the rogue programs of Reloaded helped instill that notion), but maybe he was programmed(destined?) to follow this route all along? Maybe like Neo, he's fated to do something here, but he just doesn't know how to accomplish it... that is until Neo changes him. And he's the one that changed Neo.

Watching that bit actually made me want to go see Revolutions (something I wasn't really excited about) because I want to see what Agent Smith's part in this whole thing is.

I had remembered that little speech, too, but I don't think getting out and winding up in Zion was (or is) Smith's plan. He hates humans, with a very un-Agent like passion, in or out of the Matrix. Taking over Bane and getting inside Zion is, I think, just a way for him to make the Matrix think he's still ostensibly on its side.

I think his goal is to tear the system down. He's gone off the deep end, as it were, to the point where he'd rather erase it all rather than be stuck there. After all, as a program he'd have known his fate if the machines won... he'd be useless, and deleted, so what would it matter if everyone else went too?

The Neo/Smith relationship reminds me of John Woo's "The Killer". Both are on opposite sides, moving towards the same goal. Destruction of the Matrix so they can be free.

Except "The Killer" is about 10 times cooler, and Chow-Yun Fat could kick Keanu's ass any day!
