So Ohio's own MushroomHead is back with XIII. Their last album "XX" was a good cd, but it mostly just songs chosen from their previous 3 albums (Self-titled, Superbuick, and M3, jeez, they really know how to name these albums don't they?) The problem i had with "XX" is that the songs were redone a little bit, and the differences take the raw edge away, and since XX was Mushroomhead's first major record label album, i guess retouching was necessary, again, i guess. Now on with "XIII", they say that MushroomHead will finally make it, and show they have luck on their side, and poke fun by naming their cd 13. Although i enjoy MushroomHead, they just don't have it to make it, people associate them as Slipknot knock offs, which is completely garbage, since MushroomHead formed way before those posers did. i love this cd, it is what Mushroomhead is all about, but i am afraid they are nowhere close to being mainstream. sun doesn't rise, and nowhere to go are by far my faves on the cd. I also like the dream is over, the war inside, and mother machine gun. the last track, thirteen, is flat out annoying, well a great song, but the long ass 5 minutes of stupid shit is unecessary. i hope these guys make it, i would love any rock band (excluded posers like: slipknot, blink 182, good charlotte, sum 41...etc.) to rise up, and take over the music world, cause i am sick and tired of (c)rap. Thanks for your time, be sure to pick up MushroomHead's XIII.

I would heartily agree that music needs another great rock band to step up, and I also agree that the "posers" you name aren't particularly talented.

But MushroomHead aren't rock musicians, they're noisemakers. Big difference. All the pain, rage and teen angst bullshit doesn't make a difference if you can't create a decent melody.

Well, living in heart of Mushroomhead country and having heard ONLY the first cut off the first full length major label album, I will say these guy are extreme underachievers. Ask any pseudo music critic from this area and they will tell you they way in which they took metal, and fused it with elements from rap, electronic, acid rock, and 30's Broadway/Circus music was what was thought at the time to groundbreaking as in the 'next big thing'. Not to say it wasn't at times overly aggressive, but they mastered that rare ability of being able to modify their style from heavy and aggressive noise to a very melodically pleasing sound in the confines of single song.

I may be biased, since I spent my better years listening to these guys, but I wouldn't blink at the thought of putting Mushroomhead's debut album or 1996's Superbuick as one of the top hard rock albums of the 90's.

While M3 wasn't by any stretch of the imagination a typical rock album, there was a slight switch in style to what typical bands were doing in 99. Slipknot had recently broke with Roadrunner, Mushroomhead turned down the label in 98 *coincedently*, and they were crying record deal.

So while I wish my fellow Northeast Ohioian the best of luck, I only wish they would show the world what they can offer, because at thier best they are fucking awesome. Well,...if only they could get it past the suits.
