This is hitting too close to home as my parents live above Ramona, CA (one of the places that the fire is rumored to have started from). They are up the mountain, so they are okay for now. They can't call out and have lost electricity a few times today. Fortunately I was able to call them and get the 411 on the situation, since no coverage is on as of yet on the Philly stations. I certainly feel for everyone out there or affected in any way with relatives that might be living out there.

You can take this or leave it, but I still will let you know that I'm praying for all of So. California during this time. Hopefully the damage will be minimal.

Good luck y'all.

The SD Union-Tribune's website (signonsandiego.com) has been getting occasional updates, particularly in the "breaking news" header.

(JJD: Regarding the football game, that site has a note that the mayor has asked the NFL to move/reschedule the game.)

Well for what it's worth, my cousin called. He's safe, and still in his house. The wind shifted...so they're clear for now.

Well wishes to Guru and any other Wieners out there...keep us posted.

Damn, Aaron, I didn't think a fire could come so far into the city as your place. You and Lise stay safe.

Best wishes to Guru and anyone else who is in or has family in the area. Let's hope for minimal damage.

It was announced on Sunday Night Football, that the game has been moved to Sun Devil stadium in Tempe.

Wow.

Winds are expected around 25mph according to NWS. Forecast calls for them to die down sometime tomorrow, but not much other relief. The NWS forecast literally says "Partly sunny with areas of smoke."

Best of luck to Aaron everybody in the region.

(admittedly a low priority thought for those close but) Has anything been said about the Monday Night Football game being affected by the fires? There isn't anything on nfl.com or chargers.com.

ESPN says it will be moved to Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ.

(Edit) damn, saw this already posted just ahead of me. Good luck to you, Guru, and to all affected.

(cransln: Ocean Beach?? That desn't sound consistent with all the other information... ??)

(edited by emma on 26.10.03 1537)

My Aunt originally said Ocean Beach...which when you look from a satellite view like she did...seems relatively close to my cousin's house. He's actually at the end of a canyon.

Also I had the wrong fire. He's right near the southernmost tip of the Paradise Fire. Big difference.

Still...their house reeks of smoke, and everything is covered with white ash, but like he said...it's better than the alternative.

The fire never got closer to our house than it was when I last posted. Basically, there is a natural park called Mission Trails - it has the old Mission Dam and some other stuff along the San Diego river. The visitor center is about 4 miles from our house. That park connects to a golf course, which ends just up the hill from the Mission San Diego.

They stopped the fire in Mission Trails. The neighborhoods to the North and Northeast of us had mandatory evacuations. I don't think they lost any houses to the Northeast, but Tierrasanta lost 10 houses. That's the neighborhood to the north of us, which has the west side of the golf course as a border.

My work had fires reported to the west of it - and the main body of the fire was to the east and north of it. So - I thought we were toast. The fire came right up to 805 and 52 - and that's a mile west of 15 and 52 which is pretty much how I would tell you to get to the building.

There are so many houses that have burnt down. In Scripps Ranch, many of those houses had values over $1 million - that's where 150 houses were taken.

They have something like 14 confirmed fire deaths and 23 more at the medical examiners office to check out.

We were supposed to go to work today - I got an email at 9:05 telling me to go in. At 9:35 I got an email telling me not to go in. I think our work was in an evacuation location the entire time - so I'm not sure about that one.

It's been crazy. I slept 2 hours last night and 4 this afternoon. We're taking stuff out of the car now, but it's all still in the living room.

The air is really bad. Normal air is 15 micrograms of particulate - 60 is a really bad smoggy day. We're above 90 micrograms in the air right now.

The entire city is covered in a light coat of ash. I can't find my camera - maybe I'll get some pics later.

The worst seems to be behind us. I count myself lucky that my work and home were both not hit. We'll be donating to the Red Cross.
