Just two quick notes I read on the "world wide web" today that I think would be good to discuss but that they didn't need there own thread.

1)Changes to WWE Magazines (Credit: LoP):

"It looks like even the WWE magazines are becoming brand-specific now. When I got my latest issue of the WWE Magazine in my mailbox, there was a notice attached to the cover saying:

"Effective immediately, WWE Magazine will be renamed WWE Smackdown! Magazine and will have content exclusively covering out Smackdown! program. WWE Smackdown! Magazine will be the official publication of out Smackdown! television show and roster, complete with in-depth articles, a behind-the-scenes look at the Smackdown! storylines and Superstars, and new exciting pictorials."

With the WWE Magazine turning into a Smackdown-Brand only publication, I'm going to guess that the WWE Raw magazine will now only feature articles, behind-the-scenes looks, and new pictorials from the Raw-Brand and it's superstars.""

2)No Gillberg allowed backstage (Credit:1W):

"I heard a funny story that Duane “Gillberg” Gill was denied entrance into No Mercy on Sunday, but not for the reason you would think. From what I heard, Gillberg has been working with an online audio program and they promoted live backstage updates from the PPV by Gillberg in the weeks leading up to the show. Well, WWE monitors the internet and heard he was going to do them, so they cut it off at the knees."

As long as they don't start making brand extension video games, I'll be happy.

It would be like Pokemon with Raw and Smackdown editions, and you'd have to get your friends to buy the other version so you could trade and collect all the wrestlers.

Not at 50 bucks a pop with one of the games being on XBox, a system I don't have. I hope they give WWE Magazine subscribers (such as myself) the option of either a Raw or SmackDown! subscription. That's kinda what they did to WCW Magazine subscribers, and that's how I got my subscription in the first place.

Thus ends the Useless Information About Me hour.

Brand-specific games *would* be an interesting idea, although I do share others' concern about the price tag.

I would, however, advocate a RAW/Smackdown double-disc game, with each disc being a separate brand under the same engine. In addition, WWE could market the games under variant covers: a Smackdown: Bring the Pain, for instance, would be "competing" with RAW: It's All About the Game. (Next year they could do "Smackdown: It's true" and "RAW: Can U Dig It?") This faux competition could buttress the idea of separate brands...

Just an idea.

Wait a minute, now. WWE Magazine has always been essentially the same magazine from when were kids. Meaning, something written in vaguely a fifth-grade reading level, done in pure kayfabe mode. It's worthless.

RAW Magazine, on the other hand, was the "smart" magazine - written for adults and featuring stories on wrestlers going though injury therapy, or backstage looks at the company, or looks back at wrestling history, all in that kayfabed reality of Confidential. (You know, the show is looked at as worked and everything is pretty much the truth, but nothing that makes them look bad.) RAW is worth picking up most months and flat-out the best wrestling magazine I've ever read.

So, now, are we going to get two informative and entertaining looks at the wrestling product, or two pieces of crap? Or are we only going to get informative and entertaining looks at the RAW roster and kayfabed reports on how bad A-Train is looking to hurt Chris Benoit for the Smackdown crew?

(As for brand-specific games, I wouldn't see a problem with, in next year's Smackdown game, having the entire Smackdown roster initially available and having every RAW wrestler be an unlockable extra. It would probably annoy the fuck out of casual fans to have to jump through hoops to play as someone like Goldberg or The Rock, though.)

sounds pretty meh to me, hopefully they just don't make 2 superkayfabe mags and is there a RAW-esque Diva pictorial in both mags now?

Brand-specific games--See King of Collosseum. I guess if each was like $25 each and you could buy separate or bundled etc. it would work.

Brand-specific games are a pretty terrible idea.

Why would you want it so that you couldn't match up Brock or Undertaker or whomever against any RAW guy you wanted to? Why would you want a game where you're robbed of options?

Are RAW and SMACKDOWN! really that drastically different where it wouldn't be the exact same game split in two?

Maybe they could do a WWE Confidential magazine covering the "inside scoop" on both brands while the Raw and Smackdown magazines cover the kayfabe side of things. The only problem I would see with that is that with the business being in a down cycle starting a third magazine might not be a smart idea at the moment.

One word: Realism. If I play a video game based on real people, I'd want it to closely approximate situations and scenarios that they could plausibly play out. Thus, I want a baseball game with National League and American League, facing each other at the All-Star Games and World Series. In a wrestling game, I want the option of keeping the game RAW-specific, with its own titleholders, JR and King on commentary, and HHH holding everyone down. I also think that having a brand extension in real life, but no extension in Story Mode in the game takes away from it.

And perhaps you misinterpreted me. I just felt that it'd be cool if the WWE wrestling game was sold under the names RAW *and* SMACKDOWN...but was essentially the same game.

Um...you've played Shut Your Mouth, right? The first thing you do in Story Mode is have a draft. And in any baseball game you can have the Padres face the Red Sox in an exhibition, loser-gets-Lou-Merloni game.

...and three months into the "Brand extension" you get Vince McMahon showing up on RAW to collapse the split once and for all.

And I know you can play anyone against anyone in Exhibition (meaningless) games, but I doubt that you can play the Mets and the Yanks in some unified division for a 162-game season.

And perhaps I overplayed the coolness factor of a RAW game and a SMACKDOWN game, but given that we are constantly critiquing one brand or the other, it'd be interesting to see the various announce crews playing up the rivalry on TV...

Just names. Gamecube = Wrestlemania, but it has nothing to do with the play of the game.
