Anybody else who used to play the old "Quest" line of adventure games out of Sierra (King's, Space, For Glory, and Leisure Suit Larry?). These were really the games that got me interested in computers, taught me how to type, and basically made up a great deal of my fond childhood memories (like my sister, dad and I spending hours on King's Quests III, IV and V). Sierra has since dumped these (and basically forced out the founders Ken and Roberta Williams), but it seems they're making somewhat of a comeback.

Lucas has always had good success with them even recently (Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Maniac Mansion, and Grim Fandango were all great games), and always kind of made me hope that people would see that there's life in the genere (actually, I kind of acknowledge that in many ways Action-RPGs and Survival Horror games are the heir apparents to the old adventure games, but they require so much less critical thinking....)

Anyway, Sierra's Officially Unofficially announced Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude. It's a Grand Theft Auto clone, which is kind of disappointing, but at least they're recognizing that there's life in the old serieses. I'm a little disappoitned too that Al Lowe isn't involved with the series anymore, but what can you do?

And in case you're REALLY curious, you can find out what Ken and Roberta have been up to since they sold Sierra you can actually find out Here (sierragamers.com).

I monkeyed around with a few of the old King's Quest games back in the day. Good stuff...but I was a big fan of their Robin Hood game.

I recently busted out the old Tandy from 1990 (for nostalgia) and have been trying to fill up my 80MB hard drive with as many Sierra Adventure classics I can find. Too bad it can't handle half of them.
Quest for Glory is probably my personal favorite of the series. Too bad V had to suck the big one.
I'll have to look up the Robin Hood game sometime.

Ah the Quest for Glory memories. It was the first game I ever beat on my Tandy. I remember opening the box my mouth dropping open at the sight of 10 floppy disks, the laughs when I typed "pick the ogre's nose" the tears when the antwerp kept squishing me. Ah the reminiscing pls carry on.

I remember that Robin Hood game!! I loved that. That was one of the first games that I ever stayed up all night to play. If I still had it, I'd still play it. I even loved the archery and Nine Man's Morris minigames (though I hated the staff fighting). Wow, yeah, good times.

I loved those Sierra games! Even if the later ones crashed all the time. Quest for Glory was my favorite, what with it being an RPG at the same time.
My favorite King's Quest game is the sixth in the series. The voice acting was great, the plot was good, and it even had an awesome descent into Hades, my favorite part of any adventure game ever. When you show up un the place where they normally show you if you die gave me chills.
Then they had to kill the series with that stupid Mask of Eternion game.

I LOVE adventure games. I remember playing Space Quest 2 on my Apple 2c when I was in probably 3rd grade. There weren't many games for the Mac back then, and my Mom for some reason wouldn't buy PCs. I owned Monkey Island(easily my favorite), MI2, Day of the Tentacle(which included Maniac Mansion), Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Full Throttle, Sam and Max hit the road, and eventually got Loom, Grim Fandango and the last two Monkey Islands.

I'm probably forgetting a few games though.

I've always loved adventure games. Even though I can beat them all with absolutely problem, they are still fun. I think they died out for two reasons. One, as games got more advanced, Lucasarts decided that Adventure games aren't going to sell when first person shooters with insane graphics are on the shelf. And two, young kids wouldn't want to play adventure games because they are slow and boring, when they can play first person shooters with insane graphics.

I've tried downloading the games from the net(which I don't consider wrong since I DID pay for them), but they just don't work freaking XP!

I heard they canceled Full Throttle 2, but I'm definetly getting the new Sam N Max game.

If you want to run some old adventure games, there's a great emulator for the LucasArts SCUMM series of games called ScummVM.

Find it here: http://www.scummvm.org/

It also works for the Simon the Sorceror games and Beneath a Steel Sky, which is now freeware and freely available for download.

I'm pretty sure this is legal, too, as the site's FAQ clearly states that the original CD/Floppy disks are needed for ScummVM to work.

What games did you try on XP? The LucasArts games work for me, but I haven't tried any Sierra games.

I remember playing most of the Quest series, Space Quest being my favorite. That said, I could never get into Kings Quest or Police Quest. Actually, most of the Police Quest games were really bad. I could never arrest that darn drunk in Police Quest 1! I also remember the Leisure Suit Larry series, which was also pretty awful.

LucasArts is/was much better at making adventure games than anyone else. The closest anyone comes is Revolution. The Broken Sword series is fantastic, and Broken Sword 3 is out next month. Oh, and Beneath A Steel Sky has the best plot of any adventure game I've played.

Anyone still play their InfoCom text adventures?

Gold Rush from Sierra was the first game I seriously got in to - and still remains one of my favorites to this day... Kings Quest IV was one I found exceedingly difficult and spent months playing when I was young. I still dig it. I haven't played anything after V however, despite being semi-aware of the fact they must have released about 10 or 11 Kings Quest games by now.

I spent ages toying around with Space Quest 3, and can't remember if I ever beat the game or not. I THINK I did. :-)

Then of course there was the second Leisure Suit Larry game which I was forbidden from playing until I was 14. I think my dad finally allowed me at it when I was 13 and a half - and it was a gas! I really should give a couple more of them a chance.

Chris, I went back and played Goldrush a couple years ago, and I thought it was the worst of the bunch!!! ... But yeah, I remember that, at the time, I was a big fan of it. Man, that game seemed to ominous when I was a kid...

Going back, I like Kings Quest III the most of all. While Quest for Glory was fun, it just involved going around and killing things after a while. Whereas in Kings Quest, there never really is truely any killing.

Space Quest was always quite a bit of fun... but one that I was a really big fan of also was Police Quest I. I eventually got around to beating that one when I was younger, but it sure took a while.

But yeah, like you Chris, I never really played anything after Kings Quest V. I didn't like the whole... non-typing thing. Point and click adventures are not really my thing. Unless, of course, you're talking about Myst!!!

Actually there's only been 8. Out of them, I think V was the best. The others...well....

-VI was very good, they fleshed out all the characters and the lands that you could go to nicely. Plus, there was something neat about traipsing through the underworld (which I don't believe was necessary to even complete the game, as there were about 14 different endings, but only one "really good" one). The only problem I had with it is that it basically killed off the Alexander character (who would have been in line to star in the 9th game), by removing him from the King's Quest realm off to his own little world.

-VII: This was their first ever "Made for CD" game, and was buggy as hell. But it was also pretty fun. The game played and looked like one giant storybook cartoon, and they let the humor flow a bit more than they did in any of the other games. Rosella never was my favorite character to play as (less so than Valanice, who was only in this game), but I loved how they pretty much wrapped up all the loose ends from IV. That takes some major planning ahead. The only problem (other than it being so buggy) is that the Storybook mode, pretty much just let you jump to any point in the game (and gave you all the necessary items), so beating it was just a matter of selecting the final chapter and completing the last few tasks. Also, the game seemed uneccessarily harsh for such a light hearted game (Oogie Boogie from the nightmare land STILL irks me the way he'd just pop up out of nowhere at any time and kill you off).

-VIII: This was the first King's Quest made without Roberta Williams, and the first King's Quest ever turned into a first person shooter (and after this game came out so poorly, it was also the project that killed off the Sierra Adventure department, who despite having fired almost all their creative staff, were working on a Space Quest Shooter as well). You didn't even play as one of the Daventry Royal Family, either. Just some knight. This game was rightfully shit on by just about everybody after it came out, but I was still able to have just a little bit of fun with it. It was very atypical, but I was willing to give it a shot.

My favorite non-typical game from the genre though had to be Loom. I have no musical skillz, but this was just a great game to play, and the voice acting was REALLY top notch. Everybody had a voice that suited them perfectly. And though they were "typical" adventure fare, I also really loved the Indiana Jones series of adventure games (Last Crusade and Fate of Atlantis). I spent hours on both of them, and it was worth it both times. I really wish they would have continued both series though. Loom was kind of just left off at the end. I mean the ending was a pretty diffinative "This is the end!", but you never really beat the main villain so much as you got away from him.

King's Quest V had that stupid Cedric, but seeing him get viciously murdered in at least one game afterwards (Freddy Pharkas and Space Quest 6, I think) was very rewarding.

The voices in King's Quest V also had that effect of sounding like they were recorded in someone's closet by people who happened to be in the building when they needed people to do voiceovers.

But, ah, I'm betraying myself as a LucasArts fan. I didn't like the way the latest Monkey Island game toyed around with the continuity, though.

Freddy Pharkas was a pretty funny game made with the help of Al Lowe. And speaking of lesser-known Sierra games, has anyone here ever played the Laura Bow series of games? There were two of them, and they were fairly interesting mystery adventures. The first one is a really good murder mystery set inside a mansion that uses a keyboard interface similar to King's Quest IV and Space Quest 3.

The second one used the unstable point-and-click interface, and random crashes aside, is a pretty cool game set in America's roaring 20's. Well worth looking up! They were both packed in with the King's Quest Collection, along with some old Macintosh text adventures (with emulator!) and various other goodies.

Loom was a great game, but good lord was it depressing! That's all I'll say for fear of spoilers.

I really liked the multiple paths in Fate of Atlantis. Not to mention the different options for puzzle solving you had in the scenarios. Like being able to scare that one guy into giving you the moonstone, or paying attention to the conversation with him beforehand and guessing his questions right. So much fun! And it also had multiple endings (well, two)! Nice in case you didn't really like Sophia all that much, but after Willie I was able to tolerate Indy's girlfriend this time around (and even find a slip-up where you can get her to talk in Indy's voice).

Huh? Since when was there any voice acting in Loom?

Did they do a remake or something? ... I remember liking the old one...

I much preferred Sierra games to Lucasarts games for some reason. Although Lucasarts produced games that were much more 'complete', and less buggy... (and less dying every 2 seconds)... I still favour Sierra.

There were, I believe, two versions of the game. One on disks and one on CD. Did you have the disks? The CD one was novel because it was one of the first CDs to be pimped commercially (my family got it when we got our first CD-ROM Drive). The voice acting was a bit hamhanded but it all fits EXTREMELY well. It was all very cool in its day, though it may not hold up in the long run.

I hear you. I think LucasArts works harder on their games, and I find them alot more polished, but the Sierra games were all labors of love. Plus the "series" effect really aided them as opposed to hurting them. As the serieses went on they got better together.

I remember, I think the first one was called 'The Colonel's Bequest'. Something like that anyway. Like someone said previously, I'm not too keen on the Sierre games due to the fact that the character you play can die.

Also, all this talk, and no mention of Day of the Tentacle? Awesome game, and the voice acting is spot on.

Has anyone played the Blade Runner game? Now that's a great adventure game, very atmospheric and true to the movie.

The most interesting thing about Blade Runner, in my own opinion, is the fact that the same characters weren't always replicants each time. So there was some genuine mystery to the game. I also think that Maggie was the most symapthetic character ¦ ).

My favorite part was scanning the pictures for clues, although at times it seemed random.

Anybody ever play Beavis and Butthead: Virtual Stupidity? For some reason, it took me months to find this title back in 1998, but it was darn good. Even the mini-games were fun. There were even some music videos in the game, too!

I think that Sierra's best game might just be Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. Just an absolutely perfect game, with one frustrating zombie part in Africa. Plus the vocal talents of Tim Curry, Mark Hamil, and Jim Cummings! Jane Jensen was awesome.

Yeah, especially when you had to choose between shooting her or getting blown to pieces. I found Lucy to be the more sympathetic character, simply because the issue of her being her a rep bothered me.

Great game, although I've only seen about four of the thirteen endings.

Are those the horror games of the genre? I remember looking at the back of the box and noticing it looked slightly gothic in presentation.

Mark Hamil seems to like appearing in games. Either that, or he was desperate for the work. Not only was he in Gabriel Knight, but I seem to remember him being in Full Throttle and one of the Wing Commander games as well.

Yeah. They each had a different genre theme (Voodoo, werewolves, vampires) but they were handled very differently than one might expect, and all extremely well. In addition to being very dark, however, I always enjoyed that they had the tradmark Sierra wry humor. It's too bad I've never been able to finish the third one because of a glitch in the game.

More than anything, I think Mark loves doing voice work. He's in just about every cartoon and animated film imaginable. Hey, it's constant work and it probably pays well, plus he's avoided just falling off the face of the earth after Star Wars. Though I've got to say, he was a bit over the top in Wing Commander IV.

I remember the Laura Bow games too (I only played the second, Dagger of Amon Ra), but I think those just got burried in the genre under the Sierra series games.
