Well, in case you haven't heard the news, when the Bobcats show up, we'll be getting 3 5-team Divisions in each conference. And the Hornets will be moving to the West.

So after some thinking and some helpful discussion, I've proposed this alignment for the 2004-5 season. Feel free to comment.

=EASTERN CONFERENCE=
ATLANTIC DIVISION
New Jersey (soon-to-be BROOKLYN~!, I hope) Nets
Philadelphia 76ers
New York Knicks
Boston Celtics
Toronto Raptors

CENTRAL DIVISION
Cleveland Cavaliers
Milwaukee Bucks
Chicago Bulls
Indiana Pacers
Detroit Pistons

SOUTH DIVISION
Orlando Magic
Charlotte Bobcats
Washington Wizards
Miami Heat
Atlanta Hawks

=WESTERN CONFERENCE=
MIDWEST DIVISION
Minnesota Timberwolves
Denver Nuggets
Memphis Grizzlies
New Orleans Hornets
Sacramento Kings (someone else had to leave the Pacific besides PHX)

SOUTHWEST DIVISION
Utah Jazz
San Antonio Spurs
Houston Rockets
Dallas Mavericks
Phoenix Suns

PACIFIC DIVISION
Los Angeles Lakers
Los Angeles Clippers
Seattle SuperSonics
Portland Trail Blazers
Golden State Warriors

I'd switch Utah and Sacramento, to have Denver and Utah in the same division and Phoenix and Sacramento in the same division, but other than that it looks right to me.

EDIT: According to Chad Ford on ESPNInsider.com this is the most likely scenario:

Eastern Conference

Northeast: Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors
Southeast: Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Bobcats, Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Washington Wizards
Central: Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks

Western Conference

Northwest: Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trailblazers, Seattle Supersonics, Utah Jazz
Southwest: Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Hornets, San Antonio Spurs
Pacific: Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings

That is one weak-ass Southeast division. You know it's bad when Orlando is the far and away favourite.

That looks like the most sensible way to do the re-alignment. Although you might want to change the Southeast name to "Atlantic" to sorta keep with some consistency, what with the west having the Pacific division. And I don't think Minnesota can be considered in the northwest part of the country. Maybe change it to the "North" or "Northern" division?

LOL. They would probably be the only playoff team from that division over the next few years.

Too bad there's no sensible way to get Minnesota in the Central and have an NBA version of The Black and Blue Division.

On the flip side of the SouthLEAST (har! har!), the Southwest looks to be a dogfight with the Spurs and Mavs as the contenders, Houston figuring to be a playoff team this year, and New Orleans joining the fray.

If not for the lack of another southern team in the Eastern Conference, Toronto should be in the same division as Detroit for geographic reasons.
