NFL - Jumping to conclusion? NFL upholds penalty

snip

The league confirmed Tuesday what referee Johnnie Grier said after the game: The rules ban running forward, leaping and falling on a player, as Rice did.

snip

Rule 12, Section 3, Article 2 of the 2003 Official Playing Rules of the National Football League defines the unsportsmanlike conduct/leaping penalty as follows:

"Clearly running forward and leaping in an obvious attempt to block a field goal, or try-kick after touchdown and landing on players, unless the leaping player was originally lined up within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped."

end snip

Yes, dude was blocked into Rice, but if he was within the 1 yard of the LOS, then it would have been ok. The way the colts D was playing in OT, it would have ended in a tie or another colts drive down for a FG (but man, those 2 attempts were UGLY, I wouldn't be surprised if a third went wide right if he got a chance)

The penalties are one thing, but I want to know this from the Tampa D.

How in the last 2 minutes of the game do you let Marvin Harrison get behind the entire defense to catch a long ball. He didn't even have to make a move on the play. All he did was run straight by the corner. That is NEVER supposed to happen, especially when playing the dreaded "Prevent" defense.

Props to the Colts, that was an impressive comeback, fueled by Tampa stupidity. The personal foul call right at the 2 minute warning was the dumbest penalty of all...

It looks like they just went into a soft zone thinking the Colts were going to take short outs or what not, or get a tip and INT or a few sacks and play up close if Manning trys to scramble.

No matter what, that was just sad playing by the D, and all the O needed was ONE first down and then they could have drained the clock. Great stop by the Colts D in those last 2 mins.

Sadly, I think the Bucs will take out their frustrations on my Skins.... sigh....and not that Alstott is gone for the year I think I've had about 90% turnover on my fantasy team.

The call on Tupa's punt obviously ended the game and determined the outcome...right?

Nope. Indy taking advantage of Tampa's foolishness ended the game and determined the outcome. I suppose we should be glad that the bad call the refs did make with that punt didn't decide things.

In my humble opinion as the son of a football coach, the Prevent defense is the biggest joke in the sport. It never seems to 'prevent' anything...guys guard against big plays, but any half-decent offense can throw any number of 9-12 yard plays and move down the field in a hurry.

That's what I am saying. How in the world does Marvin get open 30 yards downfield on a prevent....

I agree with the comment about the prevent. In the case of having to go 80+ yards in less than 2 minutes with no time-outs, though, it would make Indy have to run about 10 plays.

By getting the ball to Harrison for 52 yards, they end up only running 5 plays.
