I think I could've thrown him out from left, let alone Jeff Conine. Also, on that play, you could've hit Pudge with a Cadillac El Dorado, and he STILL would've held onto that ball. That man is the definition of a catcher (unlike Torrelba or whatever his name is).
I have a sinking feeling that Florida is going to win the NL pennant, no matter who ends up winning between Chicago and Atlanta....if it's the Cubs I'm not sure, but if it's the Braves, Florida's definitely winning. How sad is it that Florida can win two pennants and at least one Series in a decade, whereas Boston and the Chicago teams have gone generations without taking them?
Edited to add that Jason Schmidt is a woman.

Wire-to wire in the division and out in four games in the Playoffs. Couldn't happen to a nicer team -- congrats, Giants. It's pretty hard to play baseball with your hands around your necks, no? | BOSsportsfan34

That's easy. They've been fortunate to have the talent to win a title. Boston and the Chicago teams haven't. It has nothing to do with any goat or Babe Ruth. | geemoney

I remember LeBatard in the Miami Herald saying signing Pudge was akin to "putting implants on a corpse." But we got the last laugh. Is there any doubt that McKeon is Manager of the Year?
Tough task next in the Cubs. If we get by their pitching, we should be okay. That's a big IF, though.

I think it was more us getting hammered on the outset and the dodgers coming on too late, otherwise their flaws would have been exposed much sooner.
I guess Pudge and Conine's pictures go up instead of Glaus and Spezio's this year... | J.T. Dutch

... I tend to agree with that. I say that a lot went right for S.F. because of all the older guys on that team performing better than anyone could have expected. Bonds, Santiago, Galarraga, Grissom (one of my favorite players, btw), Young, and to a lesser extent Snow and Alfonzo. Tim Worrell was a big surprise, imo. But, yes -- they have no reliable starting pitchers after Schmidt, and they'll have to address this if they want to stay in the hunt next year.
The death knell for the Dodgers was losing Brian Jordan for the season. He and Paul LoDuca were the ones driving in ALL the key runs, and when LoDuca faded down the stretch (as expected, btw) there wasn't anyone left to pick up the slack except Beltre. Not only that, but Jordan's drive and leadership were sorely missed. Shawn Green was left to be the leader, and that obviously was destined to fail miserably. I could count the key RBI that Green had on one hand, and the shame of it is he played all season.
The D-Backs' silver lining is that they gave a full shot to a few young guys (Webb, Cintron, Villareal, Kata, Overbay, Hammock) and the experience will do them a lot of good. Arizona will probably win the division next year, with the Dodgers and Giants fighting them. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
