So just a couple of weeks ago, I finally hook up the computer my friend built for me way back in July, and naturally, virus definitions weren't updated during the process. Now I have this problem where the computer likes to reboot without warning. I tried scanning for viruses and found none, even after the latest definition update. I even tried a scan specifically looking for the Worm, and it didn't find it. It all makes no sense because my computer is behaving exactly as any computer infected by the Worm would.

Before anyone asks, I tried Googling to find a solution to the problem but found nothing. Any help from those who've dealt with this stupid virus is most appreciated (I'm running XP). Free beer is the reward.

If it's MSBlast, then this old thread should help.

Check it out, follow the instructions, see if that helps.

And after all that, I still couldn't detect the worm.

Maybe it's something else. . .

Run through Norton, see what you can find. Stinger's got some new definitions in it, and those seem to work pretty effectively. Throw up a firewall as soon as you get the chance, yada yada yada, see the old thread there.

Now, there's a chance it could be something older - or something that just hit the 'net, too. Is random rebooting the only problem you have?

Yup, random rebooting is my only problem. Pretty annoying when you're playing a game with your friend online and all of a sudden *POW*.

Have you got anything entertaining or exciting in your event logs? Either System Log or Application Log. (In Win2K, Event Viewer is under ControlPanel:AdministrativeTools, but I swear they move it in every version of the OS, so I'm not sure if that's where it is in XP.) When I had MSBlast, I was seeing footprints of RPC & various services crashing in the event logs...

Well, I've pretty much concluded that it isn't a virus. It's been narrowed down to either a loose card or the CPU heat spreader.
