IGN (ps2.ign.com) is reporting that the sequel to Final Fantasy VII will come not as a PS2 game, not as a game on the PSP (as orignally expected) but as a CG direct-to-DVD MOVIE.

HUH?!

It should be available for import in 2004, but nobody's saying anything about a US release that I've found (can't imagine it wouldn't be though).

This was the reason I was thinking about buying a PSP. But a movie?! Ok...I guess....

Damn you for beating me to post. Here's what I was going to say:

Here (u.biglobe.ne.jp) is a Japanese site with information.
Here (forums.squareamp.com) is a site that translates said article.
Here (squareamp.com) is a picture from some upcoming magazine. (V-Jump?)

I don't speak Japanese, and haven't bothered visiting the Japanese source. I trust since it was posted on /. the info is all good.

-----

They'll probably just re-release VII for the PSP.

The way the franchise has been going, its been little bits of *game time* in between big movie scenes, so all this does is take out the game aspect. With all the other stuff collecting that I need to play, I can't say that I'm disappointed.

At least it won't have Alec Baldwin.

I didn't hear dat.

TELL ME... I DIDN'T JUST... HEAR... DAT!

I thought Square dropped out of the movie biz after "The Spirits Within" bombed.

That's Jump alright...that pirate is disturbing....

Actually now that I see those images, it doesn't look SO bad, but this turn of events is still rather disappointing.

To me anyway.

They did, but this is SQUAREENIX~! Ok, but seriously, I think Square's thinking that this is a "can't miss" kind of deal, wherein the anime fans and FFVII fans both buy into the movie because of the strength of the FFVII storyline rather than the sheer gimickry that propelled FF:SW.

Given the cinematic content in FFX (and FFX2, I'm sure), and that they did "The Last Flight of the O'Sirus" for the Animatrix, they never abandoneed the movie medium. At least this is a straight to DVD type deal, so Square doesn't have to eat the costs of developing a full-fledged motion picture.

Besides, TSW was such a departure from the usual (cliched) storytelling format that it didn't work. I think people (at least me) was expecting the usual story about a team of some sort that has to fight some evil. Sure, there was that squad of soldiers, and the Dr., and her boss, but at no point could I see myself in a game controlling these characters. (Especially since most of them wound up biting it.) Maybe that was the point of the movie, that Square didn't have to create a cast of *loveable* characters that people would enjoy playing, and as such, they could kill just about everyone and no one would be too upset, but by changing that they changed the heart of FF style stories, and in doing so alienated some of their core fanbase.

Here, they could do a movie full of two hours of nostalgia, (Hey, look what Cid's been doing the last two years. Now, lets go visit Red XIII.) and even with minimal plot, it will still be better than TSW. Hell, if anything, it will be the epilogue we never got.

Damn, that means I can't purposely kill Aeris off in battle like I always did in FF VII (since I have a feeling she'll be revived). I've never liked her, she's the second most annoying character (behind the Duck Shoot dog) ever for me.

I better see a Vincent (preferably) or Tifa appearance in that movie somewhere though.

Looks pretty spiffy. It's probably also a safe bet for Square, because putting it on DVD guarantees that most of the people who would go see it will now actually buy it. I hope that it has a lot of the characters and a clear plot, and is not one of these psychological pieces with most of the plot being what's going on with Cloud's troubled head. I had enough of that in the game.

Of course, if Yuffie makes it in, I'll officially love this movie.
