Since the Sox seem to be a lock for the AL wild card, barring a spectacular implosion on Boston's part and a magnificent comeback for the Mariners, the question is: Who do you take to the playoffs, John Burkett or Jeff Suppan? Burkett just pitched one of the worst innings (actually 1/3 of an inning) I've ever seen in baseball, but he can get the hot hand going, whereas Suppan is pretty solidly mediocre.

With Burkett at 4.84 ERA, 11-8 W/L and 30 games pitched and Suppan at 5.37, 3-3 and 10 games, who would the Sox fans or the Wienerboard pick?

I suppose I'd go with Burkett, but I'm not happy about it.

Between the two, I'd take Bronson Arroyo. But seriously, I'd go with Burkett. The sox can runa three-man rotation of Pedro, Lowe and Wakefield in the playoffs and use Burkett for starts or long relief. This'll put some stability (ha!) in the bullpen and get an extra arm in there. Maybe BK Kim can start the occasional game.

With the D-Rays playing beanball as of late, combined with their never-ending feud with the Sox, this whole thing might become moot. The Sox never do as well as they should in Tropicana Field.

After Burkett's performance tonight, I am leaning against him being a starter in the playoffs.

Well since it will be October and all I guess we can go for the old "Perdo,Lowe and pray for snow" Wakefield is always a crapshoot with that knuckler but is a solid #3. I would say Burkett #4 on a VERY VERY short leash. You will not see Suppan at all in games 1-3 just in case Burkett implodes again.

Its too late to strech BK out into a starter. If something happens in a 7 game set Fousum will be the next long guy.

Fossum has tendinitis, so he's done (hmm, we trade 2 of the guys we couldn't part with for Bartolo Colon, and the 3rd has tendinitis. What might have been). As for the rotation, this is all dependant upon them not fucking things up tonite with Lowe on the mound, so they can avoid throwing Pedro this weekend.
Game 1: Pedro
Game 2: Wakefield
Game 3: Lowe
Game 4: Burkett (With Wakefield on 2 days rest ready to come out of the pen).
Game 5: Martinez

Hmm how did I miss the Fossum thing. I guess that what happens when the Pats season starts.

They'll throw Pedro this weekend anyway. Otherwise, he'll wind up with a 9 or 10 day layoff between starts, which is something I think they'd want to avoid. Hopefully Grady doesn't leave him out there for 128 pitches, though.

I think it's been a law this season that someone on the Sox roster must have a nagging or phantom injury at all times. The list is huge. Mendoza's knee, Fossum's shoulder, Giambi's shoulder, now even Williamson's... elbow, I think; there was the issue with Lyon, Fox had a stay on the DL, not to mention all the sickness spreading through the clubhouse, with Manny and Pedro both missing time, and supposedly half the rest of the team on preventive antibiotics.

You beat me to the punch on that one. Hopefully he isn't left off the playoff roster. He hasn't been anything short of spectacular.

When I saw he got signed by the PawSox back in March, I figured he would end up being a factor sometime.

Arroyo won't make the roster for the postseason. Grady will go with the veterans.

They'll give Burkett the start in Game 4. (Edit: The Herald is reporting the Sox will go with the 3 man rotation.)

Pedro will pitch this weekend for a tune-up since Game 1 isn't until Wednesday. (Edit: Pedro pitched three innings tonight to tune up for Wednesday.)

It might be a moot point, since the Sox could win the first three and then get some time off. So, maybe they won't need a 4th starter.

Hmmm, Boston vs. Oakland. The good thing about it is that one team gets to shed the choker label for at least a round.
