I was wondering if any of the Wieners were aware of bands from mostly Eastern Europe, such as Kaizers Orchestra, Nightwish, Múm, Gorky, Linus Walleij, and Mew.
Does anybody here have other favorite bands from this area of the world?

I've been getting into Nightwish pretty recently. Most of the European bands I like are Scandinavian (sp?) black metal/prog bands, Opeth being my favorite from that region (and in my top 5 favorite bands).

I'm into a lot of Swedish bands, though not in the death metal vein. Anyone who likes Belle & Sebastian would dig Edson, one of my favorite bands from there.

Finally, a topic right up my alley.

I'm familiar with Nightwish, but I'm not the hugest fan of theirs. My favorite Finnish band would probably be Amorphis, since they seem to keep successfully reinventing themselves without changing too drastically. I enjoy Finntroll quite a bit as well. When you cross black metal with polka, how can you go wrong?

Opeth is definitely awesome, and seeing them live this April was great, as was seeing fellow Swedes Meshuggah four days before that. Meshuggah is probably my favorite band of all-time at this point in my life, so suffice it to say, the end of April this year was quite a high point.

I've always been more inclined towards the Norwegian bands: black metal, jazz, electronic - what have you. Burzum, Immortal, & Emperor for BM, Jaga Jazzist for jazz, and Röyksopp & Ulver for electronic. Ulver's real fun because they used to do black metal - although I'd say they do better with the electronic. I guess Röyksopp's not real obscure since their first album went platinum, but hey, they're foreign.

Ahh if we are talking Swedish bands my favorite was Drain STH. Really liked that band, those girls rocked! They split up way too soon, too bad.

I don't remember where they are from, but my wife really likes the Gathering. They're pretty obscure, I think.

I dug Horror Wrestling quite a bit back in the day, but I felt that Freaks of Nature was kind of overproduced and flat. I guess the drummer and the bassist started a new band called Superfix, but I haven't heard any of their tunes.

Edit: Since I can't post twice in a row in a thread, I'll just have to do it this way. Guru, The Gathering are from Holland, are fairly popular in underground circles, and have a pretty good following in their home country as far as I know.
