So I've decided to add some Prince to my CD collection. Any primers on what albums are his best (since on-line reviewers seem drastically split on Prince's work) or if he has any particularly good greatest hits albums?

You gotta start with Purple Rain. After that it's all frosting. But every man woman and child should have Purple Rain

He has the Hits Vol 1 & 2. Both are equally good, damn near perfect CDs. There's a thrid in the series - rare stuff, but The Hits 1&2 will make you a happy listener for a long time.

If you can afford it (or find it used or you're ordering from BMG/Columbia House on the cheap), spring for the 3-disc "The Hits/The B-sides"

Here's the CRZ instant ranking of The Man's first ten albums (I kinda lost interest right around "Graffiti Bridge"/"Diamonds & Pearls"), I come up with...

1. Sign "O" The Times
2. 1999
3. Purple Rain
4. Dirty Mind
5. Around the World in a Day
6. Controversy
7. Lovesexy
8. Parade
9. Prince
10. For You

This would change if you asked me on a different day, I'm sure...

("Batman" would probably be in the area of #8 or #9, if you're REALLY curious)

No Raspberry Beret on that list? For shame. Some of the best pop lyrics and meldoy ever.

"Now, overcast days never turn me on.
But something about the clouds and her mixed.
She wasn't too bright, but I could tell
when she kissed me - she knew how to give a kiss."

Brilliant.

Stay away from the new stuff unless you're a BIG fan of his. I am, and his last few releases (Rave un 2 the Joy Fantastic, The Rainbow Garden) have been almost unlistenable. But maybe I'm not feeling this new jazz fusion kick he's on these days.

The Crystal Ball set has some good tracks on it as well, if you can find it. It's mostly unreleased stuff and bootlegs, but there's quite a few quality tracks on there, namely the acoustic stuff.

1999 & Dirty Mind followed closely by Purple Rain - which IMHO would have been just a decent movie without Morris Day & Jerome

What? Are you stoned? Morris Day and the Time F'N ROCKED in that movie, but, thats just one wieners opinion.

ANYHOW, if you want to experience the true greatness of Prince, but his first CD, then after a few weeks buy the next one. ANd so forth. That way, you can see what a great performer he is, and how his writing, and production values grew with each album. STop buying once you have DIAMONDS AND PEARLS though, since most of the stuff past that part is very, VERY hit or miss, you either totally respect it and love it, or you are one of the ones who is expecting a song like "little red corvette" on every CD. But, anything from the first CD up until D&P is pure gold.

I second CRZ's opinion about Sign o' the Times. It didn't have any monster hits ("U Got the Look" and "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" did get radio and MTV loving I think) but it is from top to bottom a tremendous album. And the title track is Prince's best song ... I have loved it since ... oh god it's been 16 years? Damn I'm feeling old.

That's a pretty awesome list. Then again, I could never really criticize any list of ten Prince albums.

But the Symbol album really should be on there. For my money, that's the best. The album is incredibly diverse and features arguable his second best song -- "7" (I don't think anyone can dispute Purple Rain being the best song that Prince, or anyone for that matter, has ever written).

My list would look more like this:

1) Love Symbol
2) Purple Rain
3) Emancipation (there's a lotta shite in there but enough good stuff for two amazing albums worth)
4) Sign O' The Times
5) The Gold Experience
6) Dirty Mind
7) Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic
8) 1999
9) Graffiti Bridge
10) Lovesexy

My list would also differ drastically depending on my mood, though. Honourable mentions to Crystall Ball, Parade, Come and Chaos and Destruction.

You can always find good deals for Prince CDs on ebay and you can pretty much choose a random album and enjoy it.

I have to vote for the Symbol album and "Sign O' the Times".
If you get "Greatest Hits Vol. 1& 2" though, that covers a lot of ground and would be a good place to start.

Saw them this summer here in St Louis, GREAT show, and they were, of course, dressed to Kill. Jerome walked into the crowd and was nice as could be. Shame Prince owns thier publising and they are pretty much playing for peanuts nowadays.
