By loading the shows with legend after legend and-inevitably-placing all the focus on them, you're pretty much saying "Hey! Remember when these two guys fought at WrestleMania V? Well here it is fifteen years later, and they're ten years past their prime, so what not shell out ten bucks for dredging up old memories by watching a match that's one tenth as good as you remember?"
Geez, for someone named `old school hero' you don't seem to have a fondness for nostalgia ....
I agree and disagree with you on this. TNA can NOT center their promotion around a Hulk Hogan or Randy Savage or Roddy Piper. Without a doubt, that would be the nail on the coffin. Giving guys like A.J. Styles, etc. a chance at the top is the only hope in hell TNA has of lasting another year or longer.
However, there is nothing wrong with bringing Hulk or Dusty or Macho Man or whomever for the odd appearance, and even the odd match. Many fans have powerful feelings for these guys, even if most realize that was 10 - 15 years ago. But hey, nothing wrong with bringing the back if will help to attract casual fans, older fans, and most importantly, television coverage.
Think about this: Randy Savage had some decent mainstream publicity for his gawd-awful rap album. You don't think Savage and Hogan couldn't drum up at least a handful of non-Bubba-the-Love-Sponge-related media outlets for their first encounter in several years? Keep in mind these guys have been fighting for just short of 20 years now and they were on top of one of the more successful WrestleManias.
WWE almost had it right when they turned Hogan face after WMX8. But then they got greedy and for some reason they thought fans wanted to see him in the title picture. They used him well for a while (putting over Brock, Angle, etc.) then got greedy again with the Mr. America crap.
So I guess I'm saying that there's no great need for Hogan and his contemporaries to be competitively wrestling for a title, but there would be decent interest in him making appearances and the odd `nostalgia match'. Especially outside of WWE. | oldschoolhero

| #22 Posted on 19.9.03 1323.57 Reposted on: 19.9.10 1325.02 | The problem with that scenario is that Hogan, Savage et al could use the dangling carrot of widespread mainstream publicity to demand just about whatever they wish in terms of booking and appearances. Based on past indiscretions with WCW (a company much larger and with less to lose by saying "Hell no" than TNA), it's not unreasonable to expect that sort of behaviour. D'you REALLY think Hulkster would be willing to shackle his name-and the coverage it gets along with it-to a show where he's competing in a ten-minute legends match and not being treated as the biggest star on the show? His problems with the WWE main event scene were what led to him bailing earlier this year; I doubt he'd put up with similar placement from a small promotion like TNA. | Notorious F.A.B.

I thought it was strictly a money issue. He sort of had a point with that, too. Vince / Hogan was the most hyped match on the SD! side (since they weren't sure about the Angle situation.) All the main eventers got the same pay off though so he didn't have a whole point. | CANADIAN BULLDOG

No, he probably wouldn't settle for less than that. But you know what? Hulk Hogan will not be on the show every single week; put him in the damn main event when he's on. I would. Just keep him away from the title picture and all is good.
Say they sign Hulk and after weeks of buildup, interviews, etc., he agrees to take on Piper. You make THAT the final match on the show and put Styles vs Lynn or whatever second-to-last. Who cares? The fans are smart -- especially those who watch TNA -- they know Hogan won't put on the best match of the night.
But once he is on that show... people will watch it. Argue all you want that he didn't pop the WWE buyrates in the last two years, but how well would some of those piece-of-shit events have done WITHOUT him on the card? I guarantee you Hogan would improve the viewing audience for TNA almost instantly, and with a little luck get them the television exposure they need.
That's when you show people who the `real' stars of the show are -- AJ, D-Lo, Lynn, Sabin, etc. I'm sure they wouldn't mind being in the second-to-last spot on the show for a while in exchange for steady work and a good payoff in the long run. | Mayhem

Too much for NWATNA. It's never going to happen unless Vince says screw the nostalgia for WrestleMania XX, let's focus on the PRESENT and FUTURE instead of the past for once (yeah right) and Hogan gets desperate for attention and goes to NWATNA.
BTW, what coverage does Hogan's name exactly get anymore? If he showed up in NWATNA, it's not like its going to be the newspaper or anything. | AWArulz

Don't bet on it. My Casual wrestling fans only ask me about four people: Hogan, Rock, Austin and Flair. They know all about Mr. America and know he's not on TV right now. They ask when he's coming back. When I mention that he's like 50, they always cite Ric Flair. And there's always the talk of "Greatest ever". The Marks are going to decide who the greatest is, because it's the one (OR ones) they are willing to pay to see. Hogan would, a: outdraw anything they have in TNA (I might be willing to lay down a sawbuck for his return in a match) and b: bring instant credibility to an organization that is even more fring (if this is possible) than ECW ever was.
