Beware of the spoilers contained within!

Ah yes, Rangers beats Stuttgart at home yesterday to raise the hopes of Scottish fans everywhere. These hopes will be mercilessly dashed in the near future, I am sure. They always are.

Arsenal v. Inter ... interesting facts about the game:

-- these two teams have never met in European play. Huh, that's quite surprising.

-- Arsenal has lost only once in eight games against Italian teams

-- Inter has lost eight of eleven matches in England.

Add all this up and it looks good for Arsenal. I'm predicting 1-0 for the home side.

And now the game:

Arsenal comes out flying, looking very good in attacking Inter. Ljungberg in particular looked great in spearheading a few early forays. And then, like in the Real/Marseille game yesterday, the away team gets a pretty lucky early goal, against the run of play, to take the lead. There was a throw-in deep in Arsenal territory, which was placed perfectly for Cruz to run to the near post and chip over the Arsenal keeper.

This is where I expected the game to mirror yesterday's. Inter would fall back into a defensive shell like all Italian teams with the lead do, and Arsenal would attack till they got the equalizer. Well wipe the egg off my face ... three minutes later Inter attacks again and one of their players blasts a perfect ball from 25 yards out. Really nice goal.

This wakes Arsenal up. They attack and draw a pretty cheap foul inside the box ... the ref should have let that go. Superstar striker Henry is denied by the Inter keeper on the resulting penalty shot! What a save on a soft but well-placed shot. You can just see Arsenal deflate after this.

And then the killer ... Inter midfielder Emre dances around nicely outside the box, then slides a beautiful ball through to striker Martins, who hammers a hard left footed shot home. Three-nil for the visitors after 40 minutes ... this is just unbelievable. The cameras show Arsenal coach Wenger with his head in his hands, looking as ashen-faced as Ron Knee. Then they cut to the Inter coach, looking smug and cooly smoking a cigarette! Man, you just never see that anymore on sports broadcasts ... god bless the Italians.

At this point Arsenal has 8 shots and 0 goals. Inter has 3 shots and 3 goals. Just brutal (or awesome, depending on who you are cheering for ;)).

Second half the Italians retreat into the defensive shell that has killed Italian football for the last few decades. Fuck around with the ball at midfield, then play it back to the defence, who fucks around with it then passes it back to the goalie who punts it away. Rinse and repeat. Ah, well, given their performance in the first half, and given their lead, I can't really complain about a little time-killing in the second half.

Pretty uneventful second half, until Henry burst through and ... rolled a weak shot right into the keeper. Man, Arsenal just didn't show up today. It's the 75th minute and I have to go to work. Barring the biggest upset in Euro cup history, Inter wins this one and wins easy. If I come home and see Arsenal came back to get a draw, expect to see an edit

That result was surprising as hell.

Didn't see that coming, but as a United fan I ain't complaining.

A repeat performance by Arsenal on Sunday will do me fine.

Stupid Deportivo gave up a goal in the 85th minute to draw AEK Athens 1-1. Monaco beat PSV, so they lead Group C...

A really entertaining match, although the Italians did, as noted, slow things down in the second half. The first half, though, wow! It really was "Beautiful Inter" as Hector Cuper said. The young Nigerian Martins looked fabulous and ate up the Arsenal defenders every time he ran at them.

As a Spurs supporter I naturally hate the Gooners, so this was nothing short of a fabulous result for me.

"As a Spurs supporter I naturally hate the Gooners"

SCUM!

"Didn't see that coming, but as a United fan I ain't complaining."

DOUBLE SCUM!

It's always frustrating to get absolute whompings like this, mainly because we are SUCH a better side than the 3-0 scoreline would suggest. But we've always played terrible in Europe-we could run away with the domestic double three years in a row, and I guarantee we'd still f' up every half-decent chance we got in the Champion's League.

Oh, and Crip? You WISH that's the result come Sunday. The only reason Fergie got his grubby, repulsive little hands around the gold last season was because WE screwed up, not because United pasted us. You didn't win the title, we lost it. But hey, it still stings just as much. Damn Ashburton Grove....

Excellent, a fellow Gooner. The more the merrier, especially around these parts. I was very surprised when I saw the result of the Inter match. I knew it'd be tough, but that was a shocker! Maybe this will motivate us to beat United on Sunday. A repeat performance of the F.A. Cup semi-final from last season would be nice.

That said, Wenger really needs to tighten up the defence, or we're not going to amount to anything in Europe. If we had the money, I'd say buy Hofland or Mexes, but that's obviously a no go situation. Personally, I'd sell Kanu and/or Jeffers to get some funds, then buy a quality defender.

Hahahaha! That line has been way overused!

You lost it because we were there to win it. Sure you can spin it and say, Arsenal played great football and were well ahead in the league, but no prizes are handed out mid season.

That said, I DO love watching Arsenal, they play some great football and Henry is a dream.

As for the result on Sunday, I'm actually thinking in terms of that 6-1 drubbing we gave you at OT a few years ago

Oh, and Sunderland? Hahahahahaha!

"A few years agO" beingthe operative words there, pardner. I'll see you on here at 6pm GMT!

Jeffers is on his way out, so that's half-fulfilled. Can't for the life of me figure out Wenger's reluctance to farm out Kanu, though.

I've said it before, and I'll sayit again: Where's the point in hurling money at building a world-class stadium if you have to sacrifice your world-class team to do so? We're gonna be stumbling around to crickets in five years' time if the monetary funds situation continues to play out in the direction it's headed.
