Is anyone else getting sick of him? It seems that all he does now is verbally jack off Steve Austin.

"You don't know him like I do."
"He's my friend."
"You're damn right Austin could take them all on..."

etc, etc, etc.

Honestly, if I were Jerry Lawler, I would reach over and bunch JR right in the face. If the WWF should change anything, they should either take JR off comentary, or stop his infatuation with Austin.

I pretty much expect announcers to put over the talent. I know Ross does that more for Austin than anyone else, but it makes more sense for him to be into Austin than it would The Rock or HHH. What would be ridiculous would be if he behaved the same way if Austin weren't at the main event level. Anyway, JR has so much stroke now that the announcing job is probably his as long as he wants it, unless he has health problems again.

So yeah, I find some aspects of JR's announcing annoying, but I can't think of anyone else who could do anywhere near as well. Joey Styles' quirks were a lot more irritating to me.

Besides, the big problem is the color commentary position, not the play by play. Get Cornette in there!

I am actually getting tired of the Jim Ross act. I found the 'sorry we aren't giving this match enough attention' comment very similar to a man named Tony during a certain invasion. Jim Ross has been borderline piss poor lately, and I don't know if he turns it down a notch when he's with the King or not. The thing that pisses me off more than anything is the fact that he won't take the time to learn the names of certain moves. I KNOW WHAT AN UNPRETTIER IS YOU KNOW WHAT AN UNPRETTIER IS, SO WHY CAN'T ROSS KNOW WHAT AN UNPRETTIER IS! Just simple shit like that.

J.R. also seems to take himself to seriously. I don't think an announcer putting over talent should be the man in charge of what talent does what. It's just bad for business and I find it annoying as hell. I know he is better than Cole, but Jesus the gap is sure as hell closing between the two.

I couldn't agree more , Cornette really would be the man for that job . He's been doing color with Scott Hudson in a Nashville promotion recently . He's still got it .

As far as J.R. goes , I always thought he was the second best play by play man in the business , right after Gordon Solie .

Does anybody know why Joey Styles has never been brought in ? Hell , he'd fit in Michael Cole's seat perfectly .
How about Styles and Cornette for Smackdown . That would be the ticket .

Would you rather have Tony Schiavone? Ugh.

Besides Michael Cole is MUCH more of an annoyance than JR will ever be.

Why would Jim Ross bring in Joey Styles? There's a reason there is a half assed Smackdown Announcer.

I'll tell ya... when JR verbally jacks off Steve Austin, he seems to have forgotten all about what happened last year.

By the end of WrestleMania XVII, JR was saying stuff like “That son of a bitch just sold his soul to the devil himself!” JR later got his ass kicked by Austin in front of all his friends and family in Oklahoma.

But yet he was the first one to agree with Vince's plea to Austin right before Invasion that “we need the OLD Steve Austin back!” And the WWF seemed to get the old Austin back too, until he turned on them and joined WCW. Again, JR was like “That son of a bitch!” while prasing Vince and referring to Shane as the devil.

Then Austin turns face right after Survivor Series, and it's back to the same old JR-sucking-Austin's-dick commentary that we've come to expect. Give me a break. Why can't any announcer, except for Heyman, simply establish a few guys as his favorites and stick with them no matter what they do?

Jerry Lawler needs to be replaced too. The horny old man gimmick can be funny, but he plays it off at the wrong damn time and does it far too frequently! It's hard for me to watch a match between The Hardyz and the Dudleyz with Lawler going “WOO-HOO! Lita and Stacey, come on, show your puppies!” every thirty seconds. I mean, there have literally been times during matches in which he has responded to several JR comments in a row with some kind of sexual comment.

The announcing team sometimes makes me wish they could bring Gordon Solie back from the dead to replace JR. But barring that possibility, I myself would, at the very least, replace Lawler with either Heyman or Heenan.

Not sure there are too many good replacements for JR right now, unfortunately.

How true about Gordon Solie .
I always thought the " Brain " would be an excellent choice . I think it was in the works for him to come back before the throat cancer thing .

I suppose I'd better bring this up before this thread, too, degenerates into people talking about spell checkers.

As far as announcers go, I was never a fan of Gorilla Monsoon. Particularly because he seemed to have the same damn reply to everything that Heenan ever said. “Oh, please!” or “Would you shut up!” seemed to be all he could say.

I thought it was funnier than hell when I watched the 1992 Royal Rumble and Ric Flair entered third. Heenan had, from the beginning, pegged Flair as the eventual winner of the Rumble. But when Flair entered so early, Monsoon was laughing it up, and Heenan was almost crying.

By the end of the night, of course, Heenan (and Flair) had turned the tables. Ric Flair had done it-- he'd won the Royal Rumble after lasting over an hour, and became the WWF World Heavyweight Champion. That whole time, Monsoon said that Flair had no chance in hell.

I've heard that Kevin Nash is lobbying Vince to hire Mark Madden. Don't do it, Vince... those of us who complain about JR and Todd Pettengil-- er, Michael Cole-- will get even louder if Madden is hired.

Oooh, an idea. The WWF already has Scott Hudson, right? Use him!!!

They let him go - the last time you saw him on WWF TV was the last time he was working for them.

While I agree with the comments about Lawler (just cut the perving a bit is all I ask, it'd be appreciated), I don't think Ross is that bad. I figure any announcer the WWF would employ would put over the top guys in the same fashion simply because at that level, when you're paid that much money, you'd do what you're told and shill like crazy. At least Ross is less offensive than Cole when it comes to the shilling/calling the match ratio. Sometimes it seems like Cole doesn't even realise there's a match going on. Anyway, I truly believe that even if they brought in Styles (or whoever) to replace Ross, nothing much would change. I mean, even Heyman, the god of wrestling principles in some people's minds (not that I'd agree), was shouting "Hungry? Grab a Snickers!" just like anyone else would and shilling in all the right places.

Of course, if when Benoit comes back Ross calls him Jericho again then I take it all back.

I didn't like Styles. I hated the way he made cutesy nicknames for each wrestler's basic moves. If Little Guido does a legsweep, it's a Sicilian legsweep. If the Sandman does it, it's a White Russian legsweep. Roadkill doesn't do a powerslam, he does a "Dirt Road Slam."
And though I expect announcers to refer to wrestlers by their nicknames on occasion, Styles would do it constantly. People don't like it when J.R. always calls Austin "The Rattlesnake." Well, Styles acted that way with every wrestler on the roster.

I can forgive Ross for not using the names of the moves. He probably sees so few wrestling moves anymore that he's forgotten their names.

And I don't understand how someone can expect Ross to hold grudges against Austin for things that happened last year. That's been a part of wrestling since the very beginning. Wrestlers will automatically be allies even if they were bitter enemies a month ago. When someone makes a heel or face turn, it's like a "reset" button is pressed and people forget everything that happened befor that. I don't expect Ross to behave any differently.

Last year when Nitro was still on the air. People were shitting on their announce team (and rightfully so) You always heard things like, "They should study tapes of King and J.R., thats how you announce" and "J.R. is the best voice in the business". Now with only 1 major fed, people are starting to turn on J.R. I have seen the same thing with HHH, Rock, Austin, etc.. J.R. is the best. Ever. I know it's cool to complain about something, but no one alive can bring it like J.R. I mean his old ass won't be here for long so enjoy him while you can.

J.R.'s not THAT old! He's probably around Flair's age.

Even if Solie were alive and in good health, I doubt he would want to announce matches the way they are today. I read an interview with him not long before his death and he said he didn't really consider most of what went on to be wrestling anymore. And he wasn't just talking about the goings-on outside the ring, he was referring to a lot of the lucha-style stuff and all the aerial moves.

And even if he were inclined to call the matches, I don't think his understated style would get over these days. I heard him back in 1993 when he worked for WCW and I don't think he would work well for most of the viewers today who can't understand anyone who doesn't scream at them.

The thing with JR is that he sounds worn out, like there's no energy. They should give him a "farewell tour" and then move him backstage full time; it sounds like he'd like that anyway eventually.
And, based on the premonitious Ross Report, how bout this for an announce team: move Lawler to play-by-play (hell, he's basically a face now anyway, and i don't think he'd be that bad), the bring in Regal for colour. Eh?

All you need in a play-by-play man for the WWF is for their voice to be tolerable for 2 hours at a time. That's it.

They're all going to shill. They're all going to call release dragon suplex "what a takedown." They're all going to be overly dramatic. They're all going to sell their relationship with the color guy as "he drives me nuts...but deep down inside I love the guy." That's what that role is. That's how they keep their jobs. The "Michael Cole" role hasn't changed in 20 years. Vince McMahon, Todd Pettingill, Michael Cole, they're all the same. They all had the same job. If you want announcers who won't do this, watch indy shows.

The only difference between Cole and J.R. is that us smarks know J.R. actually isn't a Vince flunky, and is in charge of stuff, so we give him less of a hard time about shilling, etc. But in terms of announcing, he does all the stuff that Cole does that annoys us. He miscalls stuff. Can anyone forget his non-stop XFL shilling?

A color guy on the other hand is negotiable. They need to have more personality. That makes them a lot more varied and the question of "are they a good color guy" a lot more subjective.

Im going to defend Lawler. When hes not hyperventilating when any chick is out he actually has a lot of good stuff to say. To me he actually tries to come across as the calm rational one when JR is going over the top about whats going on. I think the two of them have a good vibe going right now. If we can just keep the girls away from Lawler hed be really good.

Did anybody notice on Monday that on Monday, after JR miscalled the Unprettier early, it was KING who got the call right when Christian actually hit his signature move?

JR just makes too many mistakes out there. However, he still seems so credible. When JR says something I tend to believe it. When he gets excited about something, I get excited (something that doesn't happen with Cole, Schiavone or, by gawd, Mark Madden).

King brings in some comedy. I know it's sophomoric humor, but it makes me laugh (sometimes). Heyman I took more seriously, and was beginning to love the chemistry he and Ross had developed during the invasion.

The point is, JR is the best we have right now (I do think Scott Hudson should get a chance, though). Keep in mind that the WWF is also looking for on-air talent.... I think we'll see an announcer shift after the split, so keep your shirts on. Let's sit this out and see what happens.

My only problem with JR is the way he talks about it Austin. The way he talks about him is as if they are in love. I find JR's commentary during the main event of Summerslam 2001 to be intolerable. This was during the Austin is a bitch for joining the Alliance stage of the Austin/JR relationship. He was bitching and moaning the whole match, and now he's back to being madly in love with him. I'm not saying that JR should be putting over, say, a Tajiri, more than he puts over a main event talent like Steve Austin, but does JR really think Austin can take on all 3 men in the nWo with a steel chair and a case of beer? That's ridiculous and if anyone believes that, they are dumbasses. He needs to tone down his love affair with Austin. Did you hear him tell the King on raw that he was gonna go post bail for Austin? You think he would do that for Billy Gunn. And I always thought that the heel announcer was supposed to be the biased announcer while the face was supposed to be impartial, and call it as it is. They really need to tone it down.
