I'd add Whale Rider to at least the adapted screenplay nominations.

I have a feeling Tim Burton's going to get a nom for Big Fish, although this should be Peter Jackson's year.

Bill Murray and Scarlett Johannsson for Lost in Translation.

I agree with OlFuzzy about Big Fish. Ewan McGregor, Alison Lohman (again), Albert Finney and Jessica Lange could all be possible nominees from that movie.

None of the LotR actors have any hope of a nominations, let alone a win. The movie just isn't built to showcase acting talent; McKellen's nomination in 2001 was more because everyone loves Sir Ian.

The way I see it, every year there's only a few categories of films released:

-"Gee, they made a fun, smart movie. I GUESS we should give them SOMETHING." Indy sensations (Whale Rider, Bend It Like Beckham, Lost in Translation)
-"About as good as I expected, which is very good." (Open Range, Seabiscuit, Return of the King, other Oscar bait films)
-"Not as good as I expected, but maybe we set the bar too high" (Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions, Hulk, X2, Kill Bill)

I just finished making the print for Matchstick Men tonight...I wanna encourage everyone to see it, because it's Ridley Scott and Nicolas Cage and it's gonna rock.

Crazy-Go-Nuts Picking:

Cold Mountain takes Best Picture
Peter Jackson takes Best Director
Tom Cruise takes Best Actor (I'd go for Penn, but let's face it, he's a loon, and that never washes with the Academy)
Rene Zelwegger (blech) takes Best Actress
Jonny Depp takes Best Supporting Actor
Maggie Gyllenhal takes Best Supporting Actress

I heartily look forward to ALL of these being wrong come February, thus making me look utterly foolish. Huzzah!

Bend It DOES count, due to it premiering in Los Angeles during the calendar year of 2003.

From what I've heard of Zellweger's role in Cold Mountain, it's more of a supporting performance. I think she's got to be considered the long-term favourite at this point because she's the biggest name amongst the probable nominees.

And if she wins, then we'll all be treated to yet another one of the patented Zellweger insane speeches, so even better. Maybe Jack White will be her Oscar date.

I'll second the shout out to Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation" From what I am hearing his work is just incredible in this film.
