This week's edition of Raw did a 3.6 cable rating, with a 5.4 share, according to Nielsen Media Research. The show did hours of 3.5 and 3.8. That is way down from last week's 4.3 (hours 4.2,4.5) and would seem to indicate that Monday Night Football, which did a 13.0 broadcast rating, siphoned off some of WWE's audience.

More detail...

-Last night's Raw dropped to a 3.6 Nielsen Media Research rating, down from last week's 4.3 rating. They opened with a 3.3 rating and grew for the first five quarters, but dipped strongly during the ten-man tag match in Q6. It dipped even further for the Coach/Al Snow vs. Jim Ross/Jerry Lawler segment (a show-low 3.4).

The overrun featuring Triple H vs. Goldberg with mystery partners actually drew a slightly smaller rating (4.1) than Steve Austin State of Raw address with Chris Jericho and Christian earlier (4.2).
-

Ain't that special that announcers feud segment had the lowest number (not including Q1 which is always the lowest)being put before the main event spot. People really want to see announcers vs. announcers more then they do wrestlers now don't they. The King isn't he great! How ironic is it that King during Coach and Snow inring interview talked about how they don't get ratings. Here's a clue King, neither do you!

I usually feel bad when Raw drops, but I don't this time. This rating reflected on the show perfectly. The highly build and lackluster match between RVD and Kane, which RVD has been such a non-factor, and the guy they are building Shane McMahon wasn't even at the arena... They should have started out with Austin's speech for the show and build on that throughout the show. A 15 minute segment got a better rating then the overrun, that's pathetic, but then again the overrun that the misfortune of having 2 overweight announcers punking out a former wrestling who's just months retired, a young guy who looks like can kick both their asses on his own leading them in.

Well look at the bright side even though the rating opened low the first hour performers kept there end of the bargin up with the ratings raising each quarter. The Second hour was a mess.

BTW The Monday Night football half hour ratings from 9 to 11 went like this 9-9:30= 12.0.. 9:30-10PM= 13.0.. 10-10:30= 12.7.. 10:30-11PM= 10.8.. Which is a total of 12.1 from 9 to 11.

Wow, just wow. I really don't know what to say about this. the product is dropping seriously bad. I am shocked by the rating, i mean i know football officially started and all, but i didn't think raw would lose so much. A big question i often ask is where will the wwe be in say 3 years...5 years...will it even exsist?

Maybe a bunch of people who have Neilsen boxes lost their satellite signal during the Coach/Snow vs. Ross/Lawler segment like I did? Okay, probably not...

268 million is cash reserves, plus what the stock is worth. A good bet is that yes, they will exist.

Because nobody has brought it up yet, how much is Kane to blame for this rating? The cage match was heavily pushed at the end of last week during a large audience viewership period. The cage match started with a very low rating. To blame this all on Football would be a tough sell.

So then, is Kane the real Raw ratings draw, or is Austin the main reason for viewership? Was RVD's character so damaged in the past few months that nobody gave RVD a chance to win and thus didn't bother to tune in?

I don't have all the answers, but we have to be honest and say that the Kane unmasking honeymoon ratings boon might be over. We will see if the inevitable Goldberg-Kane feud is enough of a draw to keep people around until SurSer.

Monday Night Football. Football season, people.

Kane/RVD happened at the top of the show, didn't it? If that's the case, then it had to start off with a small audience, since the audience typically builds during the show.

Austin has, and always will be, a draw in some capacity. Just like Hulk Hogan. He's just one of those characters that sticks with people.

What really hurt RAW was the fact that 2 popular football teams went into the 3rd quarter with a 3-0 score. The Eagles and the Bucs had the audience after half time which coincided with the drop in the ratings for the Coach-JR segment. While the announcers drama shouldn't be taking up so much time unless they really are going to change announcing teams, they aren't entirely to blame here.
Next week or the week after when Monday Night Football is a blow out the ratings will probably rise again.
Lets not take the wind out of WWE's sails yet. they have shown the most ratings growth in RAW over a 2 month period in the last 2 years. Opening night of Monday Night Football with 2 popular teams in a close game was bound to hurt but they still didn't sink below where they were 3 months ago without the competition. And I thought this weeks show was a good one and will probably build to next week and then they'll get another boost after Unforgiven.

RAW settled into the ratings area I thought it would once football season started. Now, this actually could have been .1 or .2 higher, except during halftime of MNF they have the Test/Steiner segment of death and 'When Announcers Collide' occurring when the main event has recently been beginning. As long as they've learned their lesson from last year and don't 'Katie Vick' the ratings, they should hang in this level until January, when they can kick it into overdrive for Rumble thru Mania hype and possible get back into 4.5-4.7 ratings at that time (assuming no wars or Katie Vick stupidity knocking off half a point). Of course, they have to remember not to schedule crap in the time period where MNF generally goes to halftime, whereby they might be able to steal some of the audience and keep them around through the overrun.

So the meaningless ratings spike of a few weeks is gone? The one that didn't correlate to any increase in revenue. Kane the monster ratings draw didn't deliver? People didn't care enough to tune in to see Kane-RVD in a Cage at the start?

Austin always has been a big ratings draw but no longer being a wrestler, the only good his ratings spikes will do if they're used to get others over. One could argue that Kane doing well in the ratings for the past few weeks was a spill over from his involvement with Austin. When people saw Kane, they expected Austin? And now they get RVD being squashed and Shane 'The Badass' McMahon?

The rating going down for the HHH/Goldberg segment doesn't surprise me because that Coach/JR shit was so godawful that the casual fans flipped over looking for the start of the Main Event and saw that shit. With that crap ending almost at the hour, even the dumbest fan would know that they're not getting any sort of Main Event.

damn so called smart fans are so negative and stupid. ratings spike of the last few weeks gone???
one week does not make or break a ratings streak. and the growth over the last 2 months, as I stated before, was the largest ratings increase over such a period over the last 2 years. As far as revenue and income, why should the fans worry about such a thing first of all? And if a fan was worried about it, how would you know that it won't mean $$$ in the buyrate for Unforgiven? How do you know if people are watching RAW more it won't increase house show business in the long run?
RAW has found a larger audience and has produced more exciting TV over the last couple of months. I have enjoyed it and I think some others have too. be entertained and worry lesss about the business unless you are getting paid by the business. You might have more fun! :)

I apologize for not having a one-track mind and being able to lose myself in a wrestling show then discuss it and the promotion afterwards.

Why should a fan care about revenue? Because more people in the crowds, more people going to house shows, and more people spending money on the product means more money for the wrestlers who kill themselves every week.

I saw the numbers, they aren't hard to find, and the ratings growth didn't mean any additional revenue, infact their revenue streams continued to drop.

WWE is like an inconsistent sports team that's been relying on stars and ideas of the past to try and recapture the glory days.

And for the record, I haven't been entertained by the Kane trainwreck stuff or Shane McMahon playing badass at all.

I have to agree with the knight. It wasn't just Monday Night Football. It was the FIRST Monday Night Football of the season between two popular teams, between two Super Bowl contenders, between two teams that have somewhat of a rivalry the past couple years. You had one of the best offense players (McNabb) going up against the best defense. And to top it all off it was a close game for most of the game. This might very well be the best Monday Night Football game of the year.

I don't think the Kane/RVD match was great or anything but I don't think it's totally their fault for the bad rating. Even though they said last week that the cage match was going to be the first match I bet a lot of people were expecting it later in the show and didn't tune in right away. I still don't think it would've brought in huge numbers though. I'm not sure many people care about RVD, I know I don't, but I think less people will care about Shane in the coming weeks.

I just hope Jericho and Christian atleast get SOME credit for their segment getting the highest rating instead of just Stone Cold.

Last week RAW did a 4.2 my friend. That translates to around 4.4 million homes, almost 4 and a half million homes. This week's 3.6 translates to about 3.7 million. About 700 000 people were lost, nearly one MILLION people fewer watched this week's show compared with last weeks. Don't you think that's worth mentioning?

And for those going on about football, has it ever made a dent in RAW this huge before? I don't remember this happening last year...

EDIT: did a little digging and found out all RAW's ratings for September 2002.

09/02/02 3.6

09/09/02 3.4

09/16/02 3.4

09/23/02 3.6

09/30/02 3.6

So as you can see, there was never a loss of more than .2 which is about 211 000 homes. There has to be more than friggin' pigskin involved in this particular ratings discrepancy.

Football shouldn't matter because at the end of the day, if your product is good enough, it will be the viewer's number one choice.

For people that like both, there's always going to be a choice. I think more times than not the hardcore wrestling fan is just going to tape the show and watch the game. If the game is boring, the casual fans will switch over to Raw along with the hardcores.

I didn't think football would take that big of a number away from Raw. I was really surprised this week but I've been surprised most weeks lately. I don't think the 700,000 viewer loss will continue next week though. I think it was the "return pop" if you wheel. That and it was a competitive game.

I don't think it was all lost to football. Frankly, MNF has had a more negligible effect on the ratings each year since they have started phasing the wrestling out of the product. The crossover football fan watches for the competition I think, and that's barely even a part of raw anymore.

However, the matchup this week on MNF - Bucs/Eagles - was highly anticipated. A rare competitive matchup between two top-tier rivals that are expected to be in playoff contention. Next week's Giants-Cowboys game should be more of a non-draw to the casual football/wrestling fan. Then we'll see what happens to the rating.

My choice was this - a quality football game versus a show where Kane toasted Shane's nuts. Hmmmm...

Raw has never experienced a drop this big before, especially not coming off what was-in most folks' opinion-a pretty strong finish the previous week. Ergo, it indicates outside factors determining the ratings drop. use your minds, people, seriously. 700,000 viewers don't just turn off because they didn't like RVD Vs. Kane in a cage. If HHH fucking a corpse didn't send peeps scurrying away by the 100k, then this surely wouldn't.

again the reason for the drop was just the fact thet the Eagles vs Bucs was highly anticipated and it turned out to be a 3-0 game until after RAW went off. wait for the first blowout.

The only flaw is that the highest rated segment was in the middle of the second quarter of the game. The ratings went DOWN during MNF halftime.
