As I continue to hope in my very partisan mind to see the 2004 version of Pat Buchanan rise out of the GOP woodwork, this article appears on Drudge. (drudgereport.com) I just keep on thinking that somewhere there's got to be some true believer who remembers Contract With America and feels betrayed by Bush Jr.

Report Finds Size Of Government Up Sharply Under Bush
Thu Sep 04 2003 12:53:44 ET

The Bush Administration has brought the era of big government back, say a Brookings Institution scholar and a growing number of conservatives dismayed about such growth under the Republicans' watch.

The Wall Street Journal on Thursday reports:

"While the number of official government employees declined slightly after President Bush took office, the Brookings study to be released Friday finds the number of full-time employees working on government contracts and grants has zoomed by more than one million people since 1999, bringing the overall head count to more than 12.1 million as of this past October."

The "eight-page report is likely to fuel debate about the administration's approach, at a time when budget deficits are ballooning and Mr. Bush is pressuring Democrats to hold down federal spending." The report "finds that the growth is happening entirely outside traditional civil-service hiring channels.

'The Bush administration is overseeing a vast expansion of the largely hidden federal work force of contractors and grantees,' according to the report, written by Paul Light, who directs the Center for Public Service at Brookings, a nonpartisan think tank."

We all shold be. Unfortunately, my preminitions from the 2000 primary season(that a Bush administration wouldn't be terribly smaller than a Gore one) were dead on....though we're still better off with W than with Lockbox.

The chairman from the RNC said the other day that the Republican Party was no longer about limiting government. Welp, time to change the ol' registration.

hah, well, I'll most likely become an independent. I'm more lbertarian than anything, but "big L" libertarians are kinda freaky. It seems like there's no party out there for those that believe in Bush's foreign policy and a market free from regulation.

So Federal jobs have increased by 1 million? Now, how much of that one million is because the democrats wouldn't pass any Homeland Defense Legislation until they got their way and made every baggage screener, airline security guard, and who knows how many other types of workers, into Federal employees? How many airline workers were covered by that additional burden to the tax payer?

Since this particular survey is counting all full-time employees that are being paid with fed govt. money, it makes no difference whether it "is because the democrats wouldn't pass any Homeland Defense Legislation until they got their way and made every baggage screener, airline security guard, and who knows how many other types of workers, into Federal employees?"

The point is that whether or not one is a Federal Employee or an outside employee paid with Fed money is irrelevant - it all comes out of the taxpayer's pocket regardless. The baggage handlers have got to be paid regardless of who employes them. The Federal Government was going to pick up the tab somehow (taxes, fees, surcharges, etc.) for the baggage handlers under both party's plans. And even if they didn't, you'd be paying for it much the same as you are now - only the higher ticket prices wouldn't have the little "homeland security surchage" broken down.

Now, the debate over whether or not to contract out govt. services or use a civil service system is a different debate. But both ways cost money, and both ways have you end up paying for it. Honestly, the knee-jerk "it costs money, it must be the Democrats fault" arguement grows a little thin when the GOP controls the Presidency and both Houses of Congress.

Of course, I guess you'll still try to blame the deficit on Democrats somehow. Hey, maybe you can convince people that the New York Times editorial board and the Sociology department at Amherst actually set the Federal budget.
