Nothing too intense here, I've just been reading a few articles on this lately, and I wondered if anyone has bought a CD lately and ran into problems.

I know that the general purpose is to stop the ripping of MP3s and copying of CDs, be it for personal or illegal use, but a major concern to many is the fact that the protection may render CDs unplayable on some standard legacy CD players, as well as most DVD players.

From what I have read, it's more likely to be an issue in Europe at this time, where they play around with stuff like this before causing an uproar here in the states.

If it plays back over a speaker, it can be copied.

period.

I don't see the point of this at all.

Yeah, so far the only album to be released in the U.S. with the antipiracy deal is the second "Fast and the Furious" soundtrack. The Natalie Imbruglia album will have it when it comes out in March. It's kind of an experiment to see what happens when these things get into people's hands so that they know what works and what doesn't, what consumers complain about and what they'll tolerate.

I understand it also diminishes the sound quality during playback, just like MacroVision makes VHS tapes look and sound like shit. What a great idea!

So...has the Fast and The Furious CD been cracked yet? I remember Screen Savers did a poll talking about whether or not it would be cracked by Christmas. I don't know if it has been yet, but you figure it will be eventually.

See, I'm not going to encourage them by BUYING it to try to crack it.

Maybe I can find it used... that album sucks, right? Should be in the used bins by now.

From what I've read on the copy protection, there's a really simple workaround anyway...Just record the disc to an analog source (such as a good hi-fi VCR) and then dub it back. If you're making MP3's anyway, I don't think you'll notice much difference.

I personally make complete copies of my CD's that go in the car so I don't have to take the actual disc. Let the thieves steal dubs I made for fifty cents instead of my hard-to-find discs nobody else listens to!

Courtesy of Macrovision's Web site (http://www.macrovision.com/):

"Macrovision's copy protection technologies are designed to allow content owners to protect their videocassettes, digital Pay-Per-View (PPV) programs and Digital Video Discs (DVD) from unauthorized recording on VCRs. Major Hollywood studios, independent home video companies, and special interest, corporate, and educational program providers use the company's videocassette copy protection technology to protect against unauthorized home copying of rental and sell-through videos.

"An enhanced version of the company's copy protection technology is licensed to satellite, telco and cable operators to prevent unauthorized recording of digital PPV programs. The same technology is incorporated in all DVD players to protect against unauthorized recording of DVD programming."

I'm not Kim, but I know what Macrovision is! ;-) I think we talked about this in one of the DVD threadz over in Random but I repeat myself all the time, besides which I repeat myself all the time.

Macrovision is copy protection for video - if you try to use a VCR to copy a Macrovision signal, it tricks it into going haywire with the brightness/contrast levels so it constantly looks like it's fading in and out, dark to bright, until you get REALLY REALLY ANNOYED.

Also, I'm pretty sure that it does something to the ORIGINAL picture quality as well, but I can't remember. There's probably a million webpages devoted to this if only I weren't so lazy to LOOK

but that's the nutshell gist anyway

There was demand for a second Natalie Imbruglia album??? I thought she went back to doing soap operas or soap commericals or eating soap - you know, the thing she was famous for before opening her yap.

Ooh it does, it does. The biggest clue that you've got Macro is that the top of the picture "bends" a bit (to the left I think?) and kind of flutters.

New Yorker is notorious for putting heavy Macro on its tapes and now I have movies I dropped $60+ on 10 years ago that are virtually unwatchable. The picture jumps all over the place like the tracking is out of whack, but really the Macro was so strong that the condition of the image has totally deteriorated. Oh yeah, and the soundtrack warbles. It's just great.

Can they put that MacroVision hex on regular TV signals too, thus taking the "R" right out of VCR?

Nah, networks pretty much rely on chyrons and commercial breaks to put their stamp on broadcasts to combat piracy, like if songs had occasional voiceovers that would say "UNIVERSAL RECORDS" or something. I've gotten advance CDs where the artist or label has purposely messed with the sound quality to prevent people from duping them or keeping them instead of buying a copy when the album comes out, which is kind of a similar concept and one that I honestly think is a pretty good idea (from a business standpoint, not my own).

Ahh. Thanks Steph and CRZ, for the friendly explanation. I've noticed the bending and warbling effects on my copy of the Star Wars: Special Edition VHS tapes. Anyone know if they're Macrovision protected?

I don't have them myself, but I'm sure they are. Pretty much anything that's a big money franchise gets copyguarded.

Fox Lorber (at least a few years ago) is the only company I can think of offhand who rarely copyguards their tapes. But if Star Wars was put out by a division of Fox, I'm sure it was Fox Home Entertainment.

It is a donkey's head.
