At first I didn't think Dat Phan was funny, but he won me over, though he is below Dave and the big guy. The guy from San Fran was awesome, I can't think of his name though. | Torchslasher

Dat Phan is an interesting case. I laughed hard at his early jokes and he had tons of potential. I also felt sorry for him (as many must have) since he had to put up with lots of shizznit. Then Dat went up against Dave Mordal and just used mother jokes for the entire time. Meanwhile, Dave killed with his jokes. Amazingly Dat won.
Later Dat faced Geoff, and I thought Dat was a lot funnier in that set because he didn't focus his act on an impression of his mom. During the final set last week, he went straight back to the mom jokes, and I was sure he would lose.
I thought Rich would win the entire contest (Hell, I actually called up and voted for Rich three times). I thought Ralphie May's set on last week's show was not his best, so I was surprised he was second place.
All in all, I was happy with the results, mostly because of the plucky underdog story with Dat. I still don't think I can sit through an entire Comedy Central Presents half-hour with Dat Phan mother jokes, but I am intrigued as to what NBC can do with him.

I don't really remember any of the names, but my favorite one was the one who pitched that terrorist with disabilities idea (when all the comics had to pitch ideas to that focas group). But Dat won? I thought between him and Dat, that Ralphie would've won. I loved his routine last week. I was really shocked with the outcome. I enjoyed Dat's work but I enjoyed Ralphie's more. Although really, i'm sure Ralphie will get alot of work. He's been a regular on JKL since his initial appearance. He's a guy you can't forget. Dat, on the other hand, he could use the extra exposure that the winner gets.
The show as a whole, I enjoyed it. I think I only missed one or two episodes. As a big stamd-up fan and I wouldn't mind seeing another season. | It's False

Agreed. Ralphie's got a lot of talent and he'll be back, especially after he's grown on so many people through his appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live. In fact, if I was Jimmy Kimmel, I'd book Ralphie for tomorrow night's show. Imagine how much that would piss off NBC, who booked Dat for the Tonight Show?
EDIT: I'm watching Jimmy Kimmel Live right now and it's looking like Kimmel's done me one better by having Ralphie May on TONIGHT!

Let me explain: his entire routine is based on Hey I'm Vietnamese and repeating all of his material every week. Ralphie can come up with no material that's more original and intellectually stimulating than Dat Phan. Hence, 70% of the people would prefer to be mindlessly entertained over actually having to think about it. | Alessandro

BUT, because the other comics were such back-stabbing assholes and were plotting against Phan from the beginning, they (literally) forced the viewers at home to be in Dat Phan's corner.
So, while I was shocked at the outcome, I couldn't help but feel some satisfaction in the fact that now these comics have to live with the fact that their negative attitudes toward Phan earned him enough "pity" votes to come out the victor ... They have NO ONE TO BLAME BUT THEMSELVES!! HAHAHAHAHADATPHANYOUFIVETIMESGAY!

But the other comics picked on him so mucg, I am certain that people voted for him as the underdog. I also think Dave Mordal was the funniest of the lot, but Dat was right there with Ralphie. I am not sure how to address the fact that Dat used the fact that he is Vietnamese in his act is held against him and that each time Ralphie performed he did fat jokes and that is not. Double standard, I say.

Also on last week's show, his last joke was one that he had used the week before which I thought would have hurt him. Also on last night's show, he used the Jackie Chan peeing joke again. For someone that was as dedicated as him, I thought he would have more jokes or would not use jokes again when on a tv show where the same people are seeing you over and over each week.
Ralphie was funny and his last 2 sets were each about an individual topic but still funny which I though was impressive.
Rich Vos was the best in going up and telling jokes. His stuff was funny and didn't rely on taking jabs at one topic the whole time, or something like Dat's impression which is the theme throughout his sets. | Guru Zim

I've actually met this guy. He went to high school with one of my ex-girlfriends.
His act hasn't changed in YEARS. The material you guys are talking about is stuff he was doing back in 97 - and I'm sure it goes back further than that considering that my ex knew all his jokes already when we saw him.
He's a nice guy. I talked with him for about 20 minutes once, so I can say that

I'm glad to hear Dat won simply because I admired his positive attitude in the face of how he was treated. Nice to see the good guy get support, even if he wasn't necessarily the funniest.
I agree with Sklokazoid that Dave was overall the most talented. He's the guy I'd most like to see in something more substantial (a movie role, TV show, whatever).
As for Ralphie, I wasn't blown away. In fact, when he was called out for a challenge a few weeks back, I thought the other guy was better. Not that Ralphie was bad, but the other guy had me rolling and I was surprised he didn't win. (Today I'm going where no Robert has gone before--Bobert!)

Man, it's looking more and more like Dat Phan won't have a long shelf life in this business. If he's using the same stuff he's been using since high school, then his act's going to get old FAST.

His best routine was the one about bombing Iraq because he is tired of paying $2 a gallon for gas. I personally feel that Dave's style of humor connected to me most.If he was a finalist I would have voted for him. I also liked Rich alot, very working class, very "guy". Like others have said, Dat is entertaining but repetetive. Kind of like Pauly Shore. His live album was funny, but his TV show and every thing else he did afterwards was carbon copy, nothing new and original. |
