You never know. Perhaps they could try another resurrection this year and close the show with a Trent Reznor/Johnny Cash duet on "Hurt"

And I have a sneaking suspicion that might win best video. It's got that "This Note's For You" we didn't ever play this but that's because we suck and here's our tacit admission of our suckiness thing happening for me. If these were real awards it would win every category it's in, as I feel a case is there for calling it the best music video ever in term of using the song and the images as one perfect whole.

Yeah, that video for Hurt is damned excellent. How anyone could consider a retrospective on the life of Cash as inferior to your run-of-the-mill, girls-in-skimpy-clothing music video is beyond me. You can watch Skinemax if you're into softcore porn. Or "GGW: Doggystyle," if you can't separate your porno from your rappers.

And Cash was wheelchair bound at his wife's funeral, so I don't think he's gonna be performing anymore. I'm surprised the man has survived June's death this long as it is, given his chronic health problems and general love of the woman.

Man... Cash rules.

And as a side note, what is Linkin Park doing in the rock category? It's really lost all meaning. Anything with a guitar in it is rock now.

Regarding Johnny being able to perform, he did sing at the Carter Family Fold last month. (home.hamptonroads.com) so if MTV were to have the willingness to let him upstage all the crap that's out there, he probably could do one song.

As huge a Cash fan as I am, I just can't see him fitting into the MTV award show. I think half, if not more, of their audiance comes straight from the pop bullshit TRL. They are going to see Cash come on stage and tune out. Thinking who is this old man.
Although Cash performing would be the one way to get me to watch.

IF Johnny Cash was able to get up on stage and play a song, and I'm sure they'd ask him to play "Hurt", it would be very funny for him to screw over MTV and play "Cocaine Blues" instead. God bless that man.

If Johnny Cash does not get a single award, this world has truly gone too hell. And I'm not even saying this because he sang a NIN song, the video was probably the best I've seen in the past year. I would mark out if Cash come out and did a song.

Of course these are MTV awards, what did you expect OFB? It's not about the art or even the song, it's about what the kidz like and how cool the video is. Which I don't mind at all, really.

See, but some people might say that that is what is wrong with putting Cash in the list of nominees. Seriously, WHY is he there? Is the "Video of the Year" the technically superior video or is it the video to the most popular song? It's either one or the other, not both. You need to have a basis on which to judge. "Hurt" and "Cry Me a River" were not and/or will not judged on the same basis. Is it the most played video? The technical marvel? The technical marvel of the most played? PICK ONE.

It's kind of like People Magazine and their annual list of "Best Looking People". We all know they mainly mean Best Looking CELEBRITIES, but they always end up tossing in some totally random people. Like that adds credibility to their list. They should ONLY include celebrities unless they feel compelled to jump in a van and take a good look at EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD. Otherwise they should change the title of the piece to "Really Good Looking Random People." Likewise, MTV should just stick to their rotation's songs unless they feel compelled to watch every video made in 2003. Because while heavily played, technically I doubt "In Da Club" is a top 5 video of the year.

While the Cash video itself is powerful, it's not "cool". And was anyone blown away by the technical perfection of the "Lose Yourself" video? No (or at least I doubt). And I know that this is just an MTV awards show (ie, meaningless) and that 50 Cent probably already has the award on his mantle, but it's kind of insulting.

Thanks... I just had the move's name stuck in my head for a while, then looked it up. It is a pretty cool move, from what I read (but I haven't seen it in action).

And "Go With the Flow" wasn't nominated, but the video was pretty good. "No One Knows" was fine enough.

Those are my picks.. and some notes..

The White Stripes song is great, but the video is the biggest head-ache inducing piece of shit I've ever seen.

I know, I didn't vote over Johnny Cash in anything, but IMO, "Hurt" was the best video this decade... I bought American IV twice just to get the DVD with the video.

And Jay, Interpol sucks man... it's a fact :)

That move is in Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth. It's listed as the Magnum Driver. (Since it's Magnum Tokyo's finisher in Toryumon.)

Oh yeah, the topic...where's the love for Tiga's version of "Hot in Herre"? I love that little puppet!

I remember back when I used to really enjoy watching the MTVVMAs, back in the mid 1990's. This was before the onslaught of teen pop and carefully marketed rap hit, and thus the show featured popular artists that were also, y'know, GOOD. The best video award used to go to the videos that were actually innovative (i.e. the Beasties, Smashing Pumpkins, Peter Gabriel), and not just to who sold the most.

Excuse my whiteness, but there are seperate categories for Best Rap, Best Hip-Hop and Best R&B videos? WTF?

If there's any justice, Cash and the White Stripes will clean up.
