According to Chip Caray in the seventh inning of the WGN broadcast of the Cubs-Bravos slaughter, the Cubs have acquired Kenny Lofton and Aramis Ramirez for Jose Hernandez and Matt Bruback. Included in the deal is that ever-popular guy this time of the season, Player to be Named Later. No word on who Mr. Later is. In fact, the name of the other minor leaguer escapes me as well.

Edit: Found the name of the other guy named in the deal (Bruback).

Edit: Changed from Brubeck to Bruback.

Good good good.

First real Cubs leadoff man since Bob Dernier, third baseman for a few years I hope.

Lofton will be a one-year thing I imagine, but he still has effective game...

Yay.

Yes, Lofton is more likely than not a three-hopefully four month rental. With Goodwin being 34 and going down with a pulled hammy tonight, and Patterson's knee injury, this won't hurt us at all. We're picking up the rest of Ramirez's contract, but if he can produce even reasonably well, I think the 6 mil next year will be worth it, especially with Ramirez having the potential to be a cornerstone at third. He's young, he's decent with the glove (I think), and he can swing the lumber.

Aramis Ramirez has 67 RBIs which is 9 more then the current three headed Lenny-Ramone-Jose monster the Cubs deploy at third. Ramirez is somewhat error prone, but I don't care. The Cubs pitching staff can survive the occasional error, they can't rely on shutting everyone out (the last few days aside). Lofton I assume is still good and at the least fast. A Good deal that will hopefully result in more then a prolonged, but ultimately failed flirtation with the wild card.

And the Pirates, those filthy sluts, traded Scott Sauerbeck and minor-league pitcher Mike Gonzalez to the Bosox for Brandon Lyon and minor-leaguer Anastacio Martinez. Not sure what this does, really.

Lyon could give them a closer candidate right now, while Martinez could factor into the mix in a year or so. Martinez was the AA closer, and had performed well there.

As for the Boston side of the deal, Sauerbeck gives them another lefty option out of the pen, to go along with Embry, Fossum, and another guy they have either coming off of the DL, or some minor leaguer. Basically, Boston will be able to play matchups earlier in the game.

Now the Sox have gone from one southpaw in the pen (Embree) to four (Embree, Fossum, Fox, Sauerbeck). At least I think Chad Fox is a lefty. It would be nice to get a left-hander for the rotation, too. Somebody to put between Wakefield and Lowe. Pedro, Wakefield, lefty, Lowe. That's a four-man rotation that'll confuse the shit out of anybody.

Remember this about Lofton: his teams make the playoffs. Gammons described him last night as "the offensive David Cone" for his knack for being a hired gun for playoff teams.

I think this will do a lot for A. Ramirez. He has struggled the past year an a half, but Dusty can light a fire under his ass. Plus, any pop-up has a chance of going out at Wrigley. Pretty nice trade by the Cubs.

Great trade for the Cubs... I don't remember the last time I saw a team pull a trade mid-game, unless of course it's July 31st.

Ramirez gets a new start in a place that will give him time to come along - likely splitting up his playing time for awhile until he can emerge on his own.

And Lofton is Lofton. He won't swap 65 anymore, but he's still good for at least 15 more before the season ends. There's going to be more than one occassion this year where he puts across a key run late in the game. (It helps he can be motivated by the fact he's on a winner once again.)

While I'm at it - Ryan666, please don't do that, it's annoying as hell.

After all of this, I would say that my sig is pretty much useless and I should remove it.

Cubs fans, as a close follower of the Pirates, I can say that what you are getting with A. Ram is this: Third baseman who will hit 35 to 40 home runs with you (trust me), drive in about 125, maybe more, and hit .300, at least. He's not played like he's capable of since his one breakout year here in Steeltown. With Lofton, I would just agree with other sentiments: You're getting a winner. Ramirez will also play okay defense, and if he ever fixes the problems he does have in that department, you will have a perennial all-star for awhile.

And the Pirates? Well hey, SOMEONE needed to give Jose a home in which to chase the single season strikeout record.

Sigh........
