Jays get a steal on this one, unless the player to be later is somebody of note.

Jays trade Stewart for outfielder Kielty
Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- The slumping Minnesota Twins acquired outfielder Shannon Stewart and a player to be named later on Wednesday from the Toronto Blue Jays for outfielder Bobby Kielty.

Stewart was batting .294 with 47 runs, seven homers and 35 RBI as Toronto's leadoff hitter and left fielder. He missed almost a month in June with a strained hamstring.

The Twins -- losers of 22 of their last 28 games -- tried to trade in 2001 for Stewart, 29, who once stole 51 bases for the Blue Jays in 1998. He had his best season in 2000, batting .319 with 21 homers, 107 runs, 20 steals and 69 RBI.

Kielty is a switch-hitter who had been sharing time with Dustan Mohr and others in right field since the beginning of 2002. His average has dipped to .252 this year, and he has nine homers and 32 RBI in 238 at-bats.

Stewart will likely bat leadoff and play right field for the Twins, allowing left fielder Jacque Jones to move into a run-producing spot in the lineup.

Yeah, but they just become the even Whiter Jays. Look for the Toronto Star to soil their collective drawers over it.

The Jays got the BETTER of this deal???
They get an inferior outfielder AND have to keep paying Stewart's salary? What nonsense.

Kielty is going to be a great hitter. Outfield defense, maybe not quite Stewart. But Stewart was likely to walk so why not make a good trade for a good hitter?

I just don't get this deal.

If it was a salary dump, then why are the Jays going to pay Stewarts salary this year?

The last thing the Jays needed was another OF to replace Stewart. They need guys that can pitch!!!

The only plus for the Jays in this deal is that Kielty is locked in to a contract for 4 years, meaning he isn't going anywhere.

I really thought Stewart could be the bait for something better...

I am with Baseball America on this trade. I think they Jays got the better of this deal. Kielty and Stewart are pretty similar players, while Kielty controls the strike zone better than Stewart and that appeals to Ricciardi and the Jays.

From BA:

Apparently looking for a leadoff man who will enable them to move Jacque Jones into the middle of their lineup, the Twins acquired Shannon Stewart and a player to be named later from the Blue Jays on Wednesday. But Minnesota gave up Bobby Kielty, who may be just as qualified to hit in the No. 1 spot and will cost much less. Stewart makes $6.2 million this year and becomes a free agent in October, while Kielty makes $325,000 and won't even be eligible for arbitration until after the 2004 season.

Stewart, 29, is an athletic left fielder with good speed and gap power. He never has walked as much as the current Blue Jays administration would like, however. In 71 games this season—he missed 19 days in June with a strained right hamstring—Stewart has hit .294-7-35 with a .347 on-base percentage. Though he stole 51 bases in 1998, he has just one swipe in three attempts in 2003. Despite his physical gifts, he's an average defender with a weak arm, which means the Twins likely will shift Jones from left to right field. In 855 major league games, Stewart has batted .301-73-356 with 163 steals, a .367 OBP and .447 slugging percentage.

Kielty, 26, had a hard time nailing down a regular job with Minnesota but produced when he played. He hit .291-12-46 in 289 at-bats a year ago and has hit .252-9-32 in 238 at-bats this year. He's a career .269-23-92 batter in 224 games, and his OBP (.375) and slugging percentage (.444) compare well to Stewart's. He's also a better outfielder and his arm is significantly stronger, though he's not as fast. One point of his concern is Kielty's lackluster production against righthanders this season. Though he's a switch-hitter, his on-base plus slugging against righties (.695) is significantly worse than against lefties (.999), which hadn't been a problem in the past. Then again, Stewart has similar splits (.705 versus 1.092) in 2003.

Don't forget, Stewart's hamstrings could pop at a moments notice.

I hope Kielty is great, I really do. My point is not with this deal in particular, but in the fact that Stewart should've been used to bring in something the Jays really need.

The Jays have an outfield that is pretty good to begin with, Reed Johnson, Vernon Wells and Frank Cat. The need for another OF is not as great as the need for better pitching, either in the short or long term.

My disappointment is in the fact that they didn't do anything to shore up the pitching. Especially with Stewart as the bait for some team that needs OF help badly.

Pay attention:

Stewart is a free agent at the end of the year. The Jays were going to get zero, nada, bupkis for him. They got a player that is Stewart's equal in every way except speed and they have him for the next FOUR years at a low price before he's eligible for arbitration. Stewart gets more attention because he has a big contract and his batting average is slightly better.

Man, crap like this pisses me off.

Not to mention less injury prone. The Blue Jays don't play small ball (probably the fewest steals and sacrifices in the bigs) so losing Stewarts speed isn't even that great of a loss. Like I said before, Stewart has already spent a month on the DL because he was hamstrung, and its not like that was the first time he'd ever spent time on the DL for that.
