Dodgers bidder wants to build new downtown LA baseball stadium
A Beverly Hills developer bidding to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers said he wants to tear down the team's 41-year-old stadium and build a new one near the downtown Staples Center.
Alan Casden said the move several miles south would give the Dodgers a modernized, fan-friendly stadium while opening up space for thousands of new housing units in Chavez Ravine.
"They knock down stadiums all the time," Casden told the Los Angeles Times. "Dodger Stadium is not an antique. It's not Frank Lloyd Wright. It's a nice place to play baseball, but there are far better."
Casden is not seen as a front-runner to buy the team from News Corp. but he's hoping his plan could attract support from officials and developers who have pushed to revitalize downtown.
County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky called the idea "intriguing."
"If there is anybody who can do it, Alan Casden can," Yaroslavsky said.
Casden, 57, has developed thousands of upscale apartments and low-income housing. He said no public money would be needed to tear down Dodger Stadium and build a smaller, more vertical field near Staples Center.
Others have suggested building a new professional football stadium on the four-block site bounded by 11th Street and Pico Boulevard, and Hope and Olive streets. The land is currently occupied by warehouses and parking lots.
News Corp. bought the Dodgers from the Peter O'Malley family in March 1998 for a then-record $311 million. Company chairman Rupert Murdoch has indicated that he is willing to sell the team, and News Corp. has been in discussions with Malcolm Glazer and his sons, the owners of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It's pretty obvious that this slum-lord dirtbag doesn't watch too much baseball and has never played baseball.

I've never been to Dodger Stadium, and it may well be THE greatest place ever to see a ballgame, but it's because of similar sentiment that the Red Sox still play in that shithole Fenway Park. Sometimes progress can actually be a good thing. | Omar Padilla

However, this is Los Angeles and all sorts of stupidity can take place here. The new ownership should worry about winning first and hooking up their buddies with prime real estate, construction contracts, advertising revenue and overall media conglomerate increase second.
Even THAT'S a stretch....so, hell...this could happen.
