Credit credit Wrestling Observer. Side comments by me.

They hit the lights and the pyro, and we're on to Smackdown.

After a video package recapping Lesnar getting chokeslammed through the announce table, Vince comes out to lead off. He said people need to learn their lessons, as Kurt Angle did, because he told Angle if he interfered in the handicap match involving Lesnar and Show the previous week, he'd be fired. He also announces Angle v. Show/Haas/Benjamin for this week. Lesnar comes out, and Vince warns him not to cross the boss. Brock proposes a match between he and Vince, and Vince agrees, just not for tonight. He says Brock is still injured from the chokeslam, and orders him to take the night off and not to interfere in Angle's match tonight.

Vince vs. the Said Champion feud begins. What is this the seventh time already?

Chris Benoit v. Matt Hardy - Semi-finals in the US Title tournament. Slow to start but picks up when Hardy goes for a diving headbutt from the top and misses. Benoit hits the (truncated) rolling Germans, but then misses his own headbutt from the top. After a struggle on the top turnbuckle, Benoit hits the Crossface coming down and gets the win to advance.

-Yes, Benoit final being pushed, but if its Billy Gunn, he has his work cut out for him to carry that match.

Backstage, Vince is at his desk. Stephanie walks in and wants to know where Sable is. Vince says he has Sable in a safe place so Stephanie can't find her, but he says Sable gave him some Midol to give to Stephanie for her PMS.

-Moving on..

Backstage, Kurt Angle catches up with Brock as he's leaving the building. They engage in witty banter about their upcoming title match at the PPV and Brock warns him to watch out for the announce table tonight.

-Man, this is old school MegaPowers stuff. I love it.

Jamie Knoble (w/Nidia) v. Ultimo Dragon - Knoble comes out with the mic and says he got carried away last week when he made his indecent proposal to Torrie. He gets carried away even further and doubles his offer. Nidia leaves in a huff. The match doesn't go long, but Dragon hits a nice Asai moonsault. Billy Gunn and Torrie walk out, Knoble gets distracted and Dragon gets the pin.

-Does Ultimo Dragon really need anyone to help him beat Jamie Knoble? Well, at least he is on the show.

In a graveyard, John Cena cuts a rapping promo on the Undertaker.

-Screams Promo of the year, doesn't it.

Backstage, the APA are passing out fliers for the first annual APA Bar-room Brawl at the PPV. They invite Spanky and Kanyon.

-Hesistatnt, but could be cool if they bust out the old APA set.

Kidman/Rey Mistero v. two masked men - I've never seen the two guys in masks and I don't think they got introduced. Very short match that ended with Kidman holding one of the masked men against the ropes for Rey to hit the 619. Kidman then hit his SSP for the win.

- And you thought Raw needed a tag team division.

Once again, Vince joins us in the ring. He says he wants to recognize Sable, who is up in one of the box seats higher up in the arena. He, shockingly, insinuates that he's had sex with her. He then starts talking about Zack Gowen, who he refers to as a "sickening amputee." John Cena heads out and does a rap about how Vince is going to beat Gowen at the PPV, including the line "We've both got handicap matches it seems / I'm fighting a dead man and you're killing Christopher Reeves." Of course, Undertaker comes out to no-sell some Cena offense before laying him out with the big boot.

- I think Taker is going to put Cena over, but I don't know any a good way or not.

Rhyno v. Sean O'Haire - Nothing match that ends after less than a minute when the APA come out to give the two men flyers for the Bar-room Brawl. O'Haire ducks out and Rhyno gets beaten and left laying.

-What a minute did APA beat up Rhyno?

The Wrestlemania Recall for this week is Butterbean annihilating Bart Gunn at WM15. Nice choice.

-Ugh!

Eddie Guerrero v. Billy Gunn - Second semi-final in the tournament. Billy Gunn throws some of the worst punches in the entire industry. Watch him smacking his fist into his hand against Eddie's head and you'll see what I mean. Eddie misses a frog splash. Noble runs in after Torrie and there's a ref bump. Eddie cracks Billy with a chair and gets the pin. That leaves him vs. Benoit in the finals, which shouldn't disappoint.

- YES!!!!!!! Eddie vs. Benoit for the US title, they finally did something right!

Back to Sable again, as Josh Matthews tries to interview her. Steph shows up dressed as a serving lady and pours wine on Sable. They fight in a big pile of food.

-Oh crap.

The Desire video (the one set to the Kid Rock song) is played. This got a better reaction than anything on the show besides the t-shirt shooting and the main event. The biggest pops were for Hogan and Bret Hart.

Kurt Angle vs. Big Show + Haas/Benjamin - Good, heated main event. They brawl outside the ring and eventually through the crowd. Once back in the ring, Angle nails them all with a trash can lid. They recover, but Zach Gowen runs out and tries to clean house before Big Show tosses him around. Angle makes the save and hits two Angle Slams and puts Hass in the ankle lock. Big Show breaks that up. Gowen hits a nice dive to the outside and Angle beats Big Show with the stairs. Great spot to finish, where Haas had Angle in the atomic drop position for Benjamin to hit the superkick, but Angle catches his foot and swings it around so that it hits Haas coming back around and Angle slaps the ankle lock on Benjamin for the finish. Angle and Gowen leave together.

-Cool.

Sounds like a good Smackdown with a better lead into Vengance. Plus its Spanky/Funaki vs. FBI on Velocity, so check that out as well.

AFanVenganceisnowworthbuying.

Why oh why have they turned Brock Lesnar into such a big friggin' pussy?

Each passing week, I get more convinced that they're planning to have Big Show win the WWE Title and defend it against Zach Gowan at SummerSlam.

Best thing about these Smackdown Spoilers, Billy Gunn's push is dead.

Aside from the booking, it looks to be a decent enough show with Benoit/Hardy, Ultimo/Knoble, and Angle in the Main Event. Two Cena promos is also good although Taker no-selling Cena's offense does not give me hope of Taker doing anything more then a Kevin Nash job for Cena at Vengeance.

I don't understand it. WWE's going to Japan next week. Why not do a Smackdown from Japan?

Because that would make too much sense. Haven't you ever worked for the government or a corporation? Another thing that would be having their other overseas shows be the monthly PPV when they have the chance too. I really think it could up buyrates by adding a real international feel that could be the kick in the ass wrestling needs right now.

Same reason they never do a SmackDown! from Europe when they do the Rebellion tour each fall. They'd have to convert the tape into North American format, and judging from how much longer it always seems to take them to release InSurrextion and Rebellion each year, they might not be able/willing to do it quickly enough for airing in the same week it was taped. Unless I'm mistaken--if Japan uses the same kind of video system we do here, NTSC I believe, then I don't know why they don't do it.

Didn't the then WWF perform a japan only edition of smackdown during their last Asian tour some time ago? I think it was 2001.

Is there going to be a Smackdown brand PPV in Japan at all like the Australia Global Warning show?

Wait a tick...

KANYON'S on the PPV? YES!

The suck-to-rule ratio is evening out with the additions of Kanyon and Benoit/Guerrero to the PPV. But...but...it's still a PPV that features two McMahon matches. Is it worth buying?

Still leaning towards "no".

It would be a nice touch to smackdown this week if instead of just showing the usual clip package of WWE superstars meeting with people in Japan, that they show a match from Japan or something. Like a 10-15 minute match between Ultimo Dragon and Eddi Guerrero. Something different that would spice things up some more.

Japan is NTSC, yes, but even if they weren't, I'm sure the WWE owns their camera equipment, so they'd still be North American standards. I can't see them pulling up in each town while on tour and making deals at the local Radio Shack (or "Super Fun Construction Shop" as I've heard them called there) and making rental deals.

I'm sure the reason is the same one they used for not putting Storm, Resistance, and others on the live Canadian shows. They didn't know what to expect the crowd to do. I can only imagine that a Japanese crowd (if anything I've read here about them is true) might not react favorably to the kind of people the WWE tends to push, in the kind of matches they like to do. At least, not when for all the WWE knows at the time of deciding where to tape, Vince could be in half the matches, and STILL be the best worker in each one (Vince/Gowen, Vince/Steph, Vince And Sable/Steph And Gowen, any match with the Big Show, etc.).

Last I heard, Ultimo is scheduled to face Noble on the tour of Asia. It would be nice if they did some sort of crossover with Toryumon, though.

FBI vs. The Italian Connection!
Spanky vs. Genki!
Magnum Tokyo vs. Rikishi in a dance off!

anyway, the show looks watchable. I don't enjoy how Ultimo needed interference from Billy Gunn to beat Noble. But hey, as long as the match is good.

WWE and Japanese wrestling would mix about as well as oil and water. Can you imagine the look on Triple H's face if, say, Misawa wanted to put him in the Emerald Erosion?

Eddie vs. Benoit.....awesome. If they're looking for something for Billy Gunn to do, turn him heel and send him looking for a new tag partner, since he is the "greatest" tag wrestler of all time.

Hmm..didn't the reports from the past WWE asia tour indicate that their style of wrestling/entertainment was mad over in japan? and not just the WWE reports said it.

I am sure HHH would have a look of desperation when put in that hold/move (I dunno the move) and then sell it as he is a decent wrestler who knows how to sell..after that he gets up and pedigrees his oponent.

I like how the IWC was wrong about Hardy vs Gunn with Billy winning the title.
Oh no, this will be a 'afraid of the uproar they changed their plans!'

There are lots of pros and cons to such an idea. The big pro being that this'll get A LOT of attention from the international press. This would be a PR dream for WWE.

But then there are the cons. International shows have had a history of bombing in U.S. markets. While WWE could draw tremendous ticket sales and get a lot of international attention, it'll likely draw a horrendously low buyrate here in the States.

It's ultimately a conundrum for Vince McMahon to ponder.

Well plus there is that whole time zone problem if you wanted to show it live over here. If not, spoilers may sour some to the event if they already know what happens, especially if IWC whipping boy HHH goes over.

But that interference provided the impetus for Noble to interfere in the US Title Tourney match, thus providing us with Eddy vs. Benoit. Now, all they need to do is eliminate one of the McMahon matches (and any video packages involved with them), and add that time onto the time allotted for Eddy/Benoit.
I'll give credit where credit is due: They are learning quicker how to short circuit a Billy Gunn return from injury push.
Couldn't Vince at least have finished his feud against the cripple before getting into a feud with Lesnar? Of course, using WWF/E logic, Vince jobs to the cripple, then lays out Lesnar on the SD after the PPV.

That would seriously be the coolest thing ever. Rikishi could finish a match against whoever, grab the hat and wait for the silent hush and then "TOKYYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOOO" comes blaring over the speakers and Do Fixer come running out to the ring. I'd also suggest K-Ness vs. Noble for this fictional WWE/Toryumon show.

Version 1 vs. Benoit? Dragon vs. Noble? Kurt Angle? Cena Raps Twice? I'm so there...

This 'indecent proposal' thing is just so annoyingly cheesy to me. If this leads to Nidia leaving Noble, I'll scream bloody murder. Steph dressed as a serving lady to fight Sable?! Okay, for a general manager, that's pretty unprofessional. General managers MAKE MATCHES, not play dress up in petty fights!! We still have no clue why Sable clobbered her anyway, but I'm sure it has something to do with marrying Vince for the money. I know, you're aiming your tomatoes at me, but seriously, would you be shocked if that was the reason? Really? However, the rest of the show looks okay, but... Vince McMahon having sex with Sable. Oh, I'm dying to use the word "hypocrite" creatively, but I won't. Besides, I really admit to enjoying Sable's promo skills since she came back. Now, though, no promos but tonsil hockey with Vinnie Mac. I'll chalk this one up to deja vu. Come on, Shane or Linda, save us!
