I think that thought and all of the others about how this is going to blow up in the Lakers' face is just flat ridiculous. I, too, wanted to believe that this wasn't an automatic title-clinching pair of moves. "The bench is still no good," I said. "The Spurs will have confidence since they won the title, and the Kings will be extra hungry because the got screwed up by injuries," I proclaimed with eagerness. WRONG. Here are the FACTS.
Games played, career: Karl Malone - 1434 out of 1444 possible games Gary Payton - 1027 out of 1032* possible games (Payton missed two games last year due to league stipulations regarding the trade between Seattle and Milwaukee.)
These guys DON'T get injured. Period.
Minutes played, 2002-03: Malone - 36.2 Payton - 40.1
Neither player, despite their advancing ages, has dropped off in minutes in recent years. So, even if the Lakers play the five minutes a game less than their career averages, you've got Kobe at 41 min/game, Shaq at 38 min/game, Malone at 31 min/game, and Payton at 35 min/game. That's 145 out of 192 minutes for their four positions on the court (and, remember, I lowered GP and Karl's minutes). That's only 47 minutes per game for other players. There will probably be at least two of these guys on the court at all times.
Here is the Lakers' current lineup: 1 - GP 2 - Kobe 3 - ? 4 - Malone 5 - Shaq
This, to me, is the deathblow for any prediction of this failing for the Lakers: WHO DO YOU DOUBLE-TEAM ON DEFENSE?
Kobe? Get torn up by GP. Shaq? Get ripped up by the Mailman. Malone? Please, you can't leave Shaq unguarded. Gary? Can't leave Kobe alone, right? Play ZONE? GP can knock down open threes and I saw Kobe hit eight in a row with guys all over him against the Sonics last year, plus you're three will likely be able to knock down threes as well. Malone will hit the J from 18 feet, and you still have the whole "Shaq" thing to deal with if he gets the ball inside.
I suddenly see a lot of 110-115 point nights for LA. I'd also love to see them put Luke Walton at the three spot. He doesn't particularly care if he shoots the ball (a HUGE plus with the other four guys in the lineup) and there is hardly a better passer out there. | DJ FrostyFreeze

I agree, Payton has to have the ball but only as far as controlling the game, he doesn't necessarily have to shoot, but what people are bringing up here is Payton's DEFENSE. The guy isn't called the glove for nothing. He's been an all defensive player for his entire career, and now him and Kobe are going to be guarding the other guards in the league and Shaq swatting shots down low. Their defense has the potential to be as scary as their offense does.
Also don't forget Derek Fisher. He was their third best scorer the past couple of years and now he's going to be coming off the bench to give them a spark.
The could still use another good bench player or two, but I think they'll be fine as long as Malone doesn't complain. | NEO

Hopefully: The NBA is alot more competitive now, anyone can beat anyone. *Takes a swig* They could experience the "too many chiefs, too little indians" problem. *Swigs again* They would have to play second fiddle to Kobe, the Lakers didn't start winning until Shaq did. *Swigs again* It just won't work, like when Barkley went to the Rockets.
Realistically: Let's just give 'em their damn rings and get it over with already.
