EAGLE, Colo. (CNN) -- Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant was arrested and charged last week with felony sexual assault, police said Sunday.

Bryant, a 24-year-old guard, voluntarily complied with an arrest warrant by turning himself into the Eagle County Sheriff's Detention Facility and posting a $25,000 bond last Friday, police said.

The Eagle County Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for Bryant after a woman alleged sexual misconduct by the player in a hotel in Edwards, just west of the Vail ski resort in western Colorado, on the evening of June 30, police said.

"Upon review of interviews and physical evidence, investigators met with the district attorney's office and concluded they had enough evidence to charge Kobe Bryant with felony sexual assault," police said.

"During the investigation, Bryant was cooperative with investigators and remains cooperative with authorities."

A judge sealed the case, and a spokesman for the sheriff's office refused further comment.

The 6-foot-6 Bryant was a member of the 2002 Laker championship team, averaging 26.6 points per game in four games in the NBA finals against the New Jersey Nets. He was selected to the 2001-2002 All-NBA First Team.

Bryant was also named MVP of the 2002 All-Star Game after tallying 31 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Perhaps Kobe won't be having the opportunity to opt out of his contract after next season. Doesn't anyone learn from the lessons of Mike Tyson?

edit: I'm not saying Kobe is a rapist like Tyson, but when your rich and have everything in the world, you don't put yourself in a situation where things can crumble all around you.

Without Shaq, Kobe maybe able to hog the ball and shoot repeatedly to make 40 points a game, but the Lakers would not have won any championships. If he is found guilty, he deserves to go to jail even though, being a celebrity probation will probably be the worst he gets.

God help me, but that's the first thing I thought of too. I must stop listening to Jim Rome.

Yes, because being a celebrity kept Mike Tyson out of prison.

Previous record or not, a felony sexual assault conviction is going to get you some time in the pen. Pete Rose did time on the tax evasion conviction even though (I believe) he didn't have any prior convictions. There is definitely a point where the whole "celebrity" thing doesn't help you any more.

On the one hand, it's innocent until proven guilty.

On the other hand, it sure is sweet to see this arrogant holier-than-thou NBA's answer to Randy Orton get taken down a peg.

Yes, because it's always fun to see a man's name dragged through the mud before he's actually proven guilty.

I'm not sure where you see the "holier-than-though" part either.

Arrogant? Maybe. But who wouldnt be?

I swear every time I hear some journalist use the phrase "Street cred" i wanna throw up. Kobe Bryant can walk onto any court in the country and get all the respect he deserves. His sneakers didnt sell as well as Iversons because when he was with Adidas the shoes were ugly and they didnt know how to promote him.

And please dont judge Kobe till we know all the facts. They havent released any details about what happened so Im waiting.

And why hate Kobe because hes arrogant? What pro athlete isnt? Hes GOOD, In a few years he may be the best ever. Why does Kobe get grief for being arrogant? From what Ive heard Micheal Jordan and Larry Bird were two of the biggest pricks to ever play and they dont get any grief...

Report: Kobe at hospital night of alleged assault

This (if true) opens up a lot more questions, I'd say.

That article just confused me, but here's what I don't get about the entire thing: Kobe had arthroscopic surgery on his knee, then went out and sexually assaulted a girl? Doesn't it seem unlikely that he would actually be doing much walking, nevermind going after someone?

That was a weird article. Was the hospital they caught the cab from the same place he had his surgery? I dont remember them specifying that or not.
