So the rumour du jour in Toronto is that the Leafs will target Derian Hatcher to help their weak defense.
Why stop there? Steve Simmons had a great column the other week about how the Leafs should get Greg de Vries and Ken Klee instead of going after the one big name. My take, however, is that the Leafs should just get ALL THREE and turn their defense from a weakness into a big-time strength. Those three plus McCabe, Kaberle and Glen Wesley would give Toronto a defensive corps that could compare with anyone in the league. Aki Berg and Wade Belak could either be sent to St. John's for more seasoning, or perhaps included in a deal for one more forward to help out the offense.
I genuinely think that the Leafs are not that far away from a Stanley Cup. They have the money, but now they just have to spend it reasonably.

The real problem this offseason is not spending money but the upcoming labor contract negotiations. Teams are going to be afraid to throw a lot of money at a free agent for 3 or 4 years if the league shuts down next year. Add to that, teams are unsure if there will be a salary cap. It is hard to budget for the next few years when you don't know how much you will be able to spend.
