Now, I don't want to get off on a rant here...

Ever since 411 changed formats to an all-encompassing site of music, movies, wrestling, blah, blah, blah, things have gone downhill in quite a hurry on the wrestling end of things.

This week, for example. Hyatte takes a Monday off, and while that isn't surprising, it just goes to prove that the so-called "King" is still a juvenile little asshole who's best days are WAY behind him. His column now, when it's there, is a shell of what it once was. He claims all board posters are pathetic fanboys with no lives, yet he prints quotes from said fanboys. Where's the juxtaposition there? I can't figure it out.

Eric Szulczewski shows up for work, so to speak, virtually every week, without fail, despite his apparent myriad of problems. He seems like a straightfoward enough guy, he tells you when he's rushed things, he tells you when his column has very little wrestling content, and he tells you his views without flinching. You may not always agree, but he presents his points cogently enough that it's always a good read. Tuesday and Wednesday, he's there.

Josh Grutman pulls a no-show on Thursday. Now, I don't know if Josh pulls any type of check from Widro and Ashish. I know that he says he's got a play going on, so I'm sure he's a busy guy. Write your f'ing column kid. It's one column a week. Write the damn thing over the weekend if you have to. Since the main page is now nothing but Scott Keith show reviews and cut-and-paste news from 1wrestling, write your f'ing column. Give me some type of reason to keep going to this site.

Finally, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A never-ending cast of thousands who basically recap the week and give stories of their lives. If I want to read a blog, I will. Sean Shannon's got to still be around somewhere, his was usually good for a laugh. Jay Bower can sometimes be mildly entertaining, but he toots his and his brother's horn so much that it eventually breaks down into so much noise.

Now, I'm sure Hyatte would tell me to shut the F up, as the 411 ship is on course and purring along quite nicely. Fine, he can tell me that all he wants to, but quite frankly, that site is becoming more and more a waste of my time. Fine, he'd say, we don't need your pathetic fanboy ass. That's okay too, as I can pretty much find most of the news that I need as it's posted fresh on the Observer, Torch and 1Wrestling.

I guess I feel better now.

Edit: Forgot to say something else. I have no issue at all with Flea. His work on 411 was all too brief, and he was on time and, much like Eric S., had strong beliefs and opinions. His wrestling content was always well-thought out and off the beaten path. I'd be a happy guy if he'd take over one of those slots.

Are you signing his cheques?

Are you paying to visit the website?

Nice of you to *demand* a column from the guy so you might be entertained for free.

Red Sox Fan brought up a good question there, IS Shannon still around? What IS he up to these days and did he ever get that operation he so richly needed; you know, the nip and tuck? Lastly, why DOESN'T he have a blog? Hitler has one, Galactus has one, G Dubya has one, why not Shannon?

I think Flea just got fed up with writing for the site. He's got a site at Click Here (ryderfakin.com)

I just finished my pass through 411. It has gone downhill lately but it hasn't been since it became The Mania. I think Ashish got another job or something. Once he stopped doing the Friday column and the post-Raw email the site has gotten worse.

Today's updates were just... bleah.

Eric S. seems like a nice enough guy and all but the bulk of his column is reader mail and I just scroll on through it.

I hate to do it, but there it is. As far as me bitching about Grutman no-showing his column, yeah, it pisses me off. He's entertaining, yes. If you've read his columns, you know that he pimps his play non-stop, makes Lance Storm jokes and throws in some funny stuff from time to time. All I'm asking for is for 411 to get their collective shit together and have news/op columns every damn day. Get Flea back. Get some new writers. Whatever it takes.

As long as Scott Keith doesn't do it.

No Hyatte on Monday. No Grut on Thursday. Now no Pankonin on Friday. If not for Eric S., I would think 411 had given up on doing news columns altogether.

Even though I don't pay them, the least they could do is provide somebody to fill in. Even if someone just no shows, they should still have a column ready to go up. NBC doesn't air a test pattern when Tom Brokaw takes a day off. If they want to claim a role of importance within the IWC (for whatever that's worth), then they should start acting with responsibility to back up such a claim. Sometimes, the articles they don't post says more than the hype in the articles they do post.

And its been a few weeks since we last heard from NoSoul, if I'm not mistaken.

Where'd everybody go???

Jesus Christ what a binch of frieking whiners! Does it occur to any of you that thier really isnt that much to report? No compitition from another company makes the WWE the only source for MOST of the nations business. And, if there is not really a lot to report, then what are they gonna do? Pull a "willie the worker" and just make shit up? Fucking christ it's bad enough everybody wants to sit and complain about HHH and about how a .5 drop in ratings is like the end of the fucking world, but shit people, WWE still outdraws the NBA and NHL finals, week after week, and all of you bone heads who do 99% of the online bitching will still tune in every single week to watch it regardless. In other words, if you cant find a collumn to "entertain" you (I always thought they were to inform first, and entertain second) then surf the web a little and get a fucking life.

Josh Grutman can take the odd week off if it means that he's still in it and being hilarious for the long haul.

Eric S is just too much for me to read. I agree with 75% of what he says, but I'm not a fan of his writing style.

Hyatte ceased to be interesting about two years ago.

I miss Ashish's straight-forward 'week-in-review' recaps on Friday where he just bitched about WWE.

Memo to Eddie: Writing wrestling news updates is a HOBBY, not a job. If one of us can't make it one week, it's not like there is going to be a gaping hole in the front page of The New York Times. We don't get paid and I would guess that you probably don't click banner ads so I really don't think any of the 411 staff owe you anything. A column that takes five minutes to read usually takes three to five hours to write and sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the week. I don't know if you live in an online reality like Lawnmower Man but "responsibility" IS passing on things that you enjoy (writing columns) to take care of shit in *real* life (school, work, family) that is more important. Grut's working on his ass of on a play from what I understand and I don't think his associates would take "Junk News Huzzah" as an excuse for derailing work. Big deal, he'll be back next week and there is no sense in replacing the sites most popular writer because he has a life.

If you take a look around the net, it's not just 411 but everywhere that's slowing down. Two years ago, a million good sites with a million new columns a day existed. Now there are a handful of good sites and all of them have seen big time slowdowns in their columns. Is it because the writers are lazy? No, it's because there are only so many times you can gripe about Triple H or fantasy book the cruiser division before it just turns into repetitive gum-flappin' that nobody wants to hear anyway. News updates also get a bit difficult to write when you have nothing fresh to work with but "WWE.com Velocity & Confidential Previews". Anyway, that's my two cents.

If you notice, I don't gripe about the fact that Grut wasn't there for that day (well, beyond the fact that I enjoy reading Grut), and I don't blame the writers for devoting time to their personal lives rather than writing a wrestling column. In my example, I don't complain about Tom Brokaw for taking the day off, but rather make the point that NBC is prepared to handle it. All I'm really saying is that 411 should have been ready with a replacement writer. Just a little thing like knowing there will always be a daily news report would go a long way towards establishing 411 as a premier (wrestling) news site.

I also agree with you on the lack of opinion content for columns lately. The above complaint pertains to "news", which, while it might be slower on certain days, should provide regular content (even if the report for one day is just the Velocity and Confidential preview).

If anything, that fact that I'm even slightly upset that they missed a column is a mark of appreciation for what they do. I tried writing a column for slashwrestling when CRZ first debuted it almost four years ago, and I didn't last more than two or three attempts. My hat is off to anyone who can do this on a regular basis.

Dude, you gotta chill. It's JUST wrestling, Full-Contact Ballet.
It may be a wrestling news site, but they are probably no more credible as 1bob, and no one REALLY knows what goes on backstage, so all we can do is speculate and gossip about who MAY or MAY NOT do whatever.

Just remember what Bower said. They are doing this as a hobby and if someone needs time off for Real Life, then they don't care if a column is missed.

And if somebody can't live with that fact that they couldn't read a column for a week or two, I'm sure CRZ has one of his patented remarks for them.

Its not like I'm losing sleep over 411's status within the IWC. I'm just suggesting a way in which 411 could be better.

Anyone who has read a lot of my posts would know that I am NOT a big 411 fan. Well, that's not true. I bear the site no ill. I do not, however, like some columnists and some of the cut-and-paste stuff. And, on the latter, my dislike is based on the fact that I wish someone would just ask, "Did 1Wresting or the Torch just post some heap of bollocks because they wanted something fresh on the main page? Can't we be better than they?"

But I have no problem with columnists not turning in work. Fuck it. Take time off. So many IWC writers and even then, that word can be a stretch, since many just type without stopping to think, edit, retry, etc. just write week after week. To them, being there is important, not saying something. I wish Scott Keith would just take some time off, so he could come back when he's having fun. He doesn't seem to enjoy his gig nearly so much as he should. I like the fact that Jay just does his schtick when he's good and ready, because, when he does, he's got everything firing on all cylinders. Do I agree with him a lot of the time? No. But the man's cruising along, happily. I get the same vibe from Flea. He digs what he's doing.

No one else in the "IWC" will ever be CRZ. That man was a workhorse of unimaginable proportions. He might well still be, but such details might be personal. Let's drop it. But when people embark on an unpaid creative writing exercise, it is far better for them to be creative than consistent. I would prefer hearing from every IWC writer once every other month, if it meant that they brought their best stuff to the table each time.

As for people filling in for absent columnists, that's a difficult issue. Things happen, people go absent, and I doubt Widro and Ashish are just going to run any old submitted column, because oftentimes those are terrible. I don't mean to say that columnists are gods; far from it. But sometimes there is no alternative. The only reason I have had people fill in for me in my absences is that I generally know when I have nothing to say and contact people ahead of time, asking them if they have anything to jump in with. But I'm anal like that. I don't expect that from anyone else.
