An acquaintance of mine managed to abscond with a preview copy of the first new Ren & Stimpy episode for the weekend. (He works for a company that will go unnamed, but has legit connections to the TV industry.)

No major spoilers, but a few observations:

* If you thought the gross-out humor was a trademark of the OLD R&S... you ain't seen nothin' yet. This episode may have been a decade's worth of censored-by-Nickelodeon frustration coming out in one half-hour show. (One line near the end will probably get bleeped, but the rest should be TNN-worthy, considering its South Parkian time slot.)

* The relationship between Ren and Stimpy has... well... changed a bit.

* A few great one-liners, as you would expect.

* You'll never think of baseball the same way again.

According to TNN/Spike's website, the animation block begins on Thursday, June 26th at 10PM with Ren & Stimpy, Gary the Rat, Striperella, and then Ren & Stimpy Classics.

I'm not sure if this is what you're hinting at, but John Kricfalusi was interviewed in The Onion's "The Tenacity of the Cockroach" book and he admitted that Ren and Stimpy were always supposed to be gay lovers, but Nickelodeon made him cut most of that out. (It was always DEEP in the context, though.)

That book's highly worth reading, by the way. If I picked the people they interviewed, it would've been the same book. (Kricfalusi, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Mr. T, Jello Biafra, David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, etc. etc.)

I haven't heard that many positive things about the new Ren and Stimpy. I'm still looking forward to it, though.

At least John K. is doing the voice of Ren.

I always thought that was the underlying premise. I can't wait for the new Ren & Stimpy episodes.

I read somewhere that Billy West no longer does the voice of Stimpy.

Is this true, vsp?

The "classic" Ren & Stimpy episodes will include all the footage/dialogue that the Nickelodeon censors cut out of the original run, correct?

And what's this I hear about Stimpy have a different voice?!? Say it ain't so ...

You know, that's a good question. I don't have the best ear for voices, and I didn't watch the closing credits (if there were any) on the aforementioned preview tape. (web search web search...) Initial signs say that West isn't on board, but John K. is doing Ren's voice again.

If it's not West, whoever they got to replace him isn't bad.

As it turns out, Billy West no longer does the voice of Stimpy. The new voice of Stimpy is someone named Eric, who I never heard of before.

I'm thinking I liked having Nickelodeon there to protect me. IMO, subtlety is usually funnier than... well, it's funnier than whatever was going on in those two movies.

I mean, Waylon Smithers is a funny character because we all know (wink wink) what his deal is (nudge nudge.) I don't need to see him blowing a guy at a rest area to get the picture.

Eh, I dunno. But man, the guy doing Stimpy's voice sure is terrible.

...jeeeeeez.

So, TNN is revamping themselves to cater to kids that think Nick is too highbrow?

Poor John K. He's really gone off the deep end, there. I thought "Ripping Friends" and his take on Yogi Bear was bad...

Look at it this way...

South Park started out as an exercise in lowbrow humor; the first episode was a deliberate attempt to push the envelope of outrageousness, wedging in dildo references and anal intrusion and gratuitous vomiting and other things you just wouldn't see on Scooby-Doo. It evolved into one of the -- yes, I'll say it -- best-written satires on TV. Still outrageous (not too many other shows could pull off, say, the Scott Tenorman episode), but once the premise was set and the fan base was there, they had a license to get creative and topical.

John K could go there. Or he could think "Booger and ass jokes brought me to the dance, so booger and ass jokes are what I'll stick with." Time will tell.

vsp, I can see your point on this. I'm not very optimistic, but hopefully it will become something good.

Or he could think "Booger and ass jokes brought me to the dance, so booger and ass jokes are what I'll stick with."

But that's the problem. I'm sure the boogers are still intact, but instead of using their asses to fart, Stimpy is now getting fucked in his.
