So, about a month ago, I started a new game of Civ 3. I decided to play on a fan-made Earth map that I felt best represented (and offered good potential at gameplay, and I made sure that the starting locations were random simply because if not, the Americans, Iroquoi, and Aztecs would have a MAJOR advantage) for my first 24 man game (obviously including the 'play the world' people) on Monarch with the only victory condition being world domination.

I've been playing for a month now, and I'm barely, BARELY hanging onto my position as master and ruler of the world. I started in South America, so my land isn't particularly great... nor are my resources... but I'm hanging in there...

Anyway... as great as this game has been so far, and as much potential as it has as being one of my most hard-fought, and intreaguing conquests... I've hit a bit of a snag. You see, every single turn now takes about an hour.

Now, I can understand it going a little slow 'cause of the sheer fact that it's, well, quite the big map and that there's 24 (actually, now 23; 20 of which have more then 1 city) civilizations on the map. But... I find it rather disgusting that it takes an hour for every turn, when a game on a map slightly smaller with 16 civilizations takes about 5-10 minutes at most.

Oh, and interestingly enough, as the game progresses, the turns take longer. I've come to the baseless conclusion that every 20 turns, the turn length doubles. (Actually, it oonly started getting really slow during the industrial age, and now that we've just reached the modern age... it's now gotten slower still. So, there is a sort of progression... ... I guess 'cause there's more goings-on now? ... But, I can't see how 'cause there haven't been any more cities built for some time, not to mention there's fewer civs to deal with.)

It's not my system, I don't think... I exceed all the requirements (that includes having more then enough free disk space and ram...) so... I can't understand why it would go so slow. And it's not like my processor is chugging during the turns. In fact, it rarely apears as if my processor is doing much at all...

Oh, it might mean something, so... it likes to take 5 minutes whenever an airport or habor is built, and about 10 if I chose to abandon a city. Don't even ask how long it takes to declair war. (Maybe with airports and harbors, it's spending all that time connecting trade routs to all the other cities, and with war... well... it affects everyone's opinion of me? But I don't understand WHY it would take that long when, in a slightly smaller game, the same wait is non-existent.)

I've looked around the 'net for solutions or even mention of similar problems, but I haven't seen anything. Does anyone have any idea as to how I might make the game run, well, at least a LITTLE bit faster? As much as I enjoy reading, I find it rather annoying that I can get through a couple chapters of a book while waiting for my turn.

I've never played 24 man game before, but that's nothing that I've ever had a problem with, on my current machine or a previous one. Only thing that I can think of is that maybe it's a flaw in the progamming of the map. Then again, with 24 civs there is a bunch of stuff going on, so it could just be the sheer amount of stuff going on.

My only solution to this problem is an absolute TON of RAM. I noticed too that on my system, whenever I play against a large number of civilizations, everything takes forever as well. So much so that I would go and find other things to do inbetween turns.

When I do play that game anymore, I just stick to a few rivals and an easy level. Takes way too long to play otherwise.

That was the reason I eventually stopped playing the game, if I was playing at a higher diff. level and with multiple opponents the game ran far too slowly.
On a similar subject anyone else playing Rise of Nations?

Rise of Nations is friggin GREAT.

Acheived global domination in 18 turns with 1 ally, and land mass majority.
