Man, this has to be my lamest summer ever for going to concerts. Usually, I'm taking in at least one show a month. Now with higher ticket prices/shitty package tours, they're becoming much more innfrequent. In fact, the only two shows I have booked on the horizon are Pearl Jam at MSG and Springsteen at Gillette Stadium.

Ah, maybe I'm just getting older and/or bitter about the whole scene. I don't have the patience to sit through an all-day festival anymore. I actually want to see band that I like, rather than what a radio station tells me to. Phish fans just annoy me to no end nowadays, so I can't even stomach going there. (and I've been to a bunch of Phish shows in my 20's) I used to see Dave Matthews every summer before it became a junior high field trip.

Any recommendations for this bitter old man? Pretty much anything related to rock and/or roll interests me and I'm always the type that likes to be surprised by a performer's live show. (Kid Rock being my most recent example)

I'm with you on the festivals. When I was in high school "18 bands for 18 bucks" or something like that was fine because it was a day to hang with friends and see eneough good bands to justify it, even if I wasn't into the drugs or moshing. Nowadays, 45 bucks to see crap just doesn't do it.

Bon Jovi and the Goo Goo Dolls are on tour throughout the summer. I saw them in March and and have tickets to see them again in July and both bands put on one hell of a show.

Pity you missed 'chicks with picks' night at Harper's Ferry in Allston last week. Mary Prankster, the sexiest thing ever to come out of Annapolis, and Antigone Rising, which was considerably better than I expected.

There is the American Fleadh on the 21st at whatever they call HarborLights now, but I don't know if you're into Irish rock at all. I'll probably be there on account of Black 47. Just look for the drunk guy with the big red face.

Or there's "Monsters of Cheesy Arena Rock" In Worcester. I forget when, but the opportunity to see Journey, Styx and Speedwagon comes along once in, I don't know, three years.

And since I was going to be in Portland ME that weekend anyway, I'm going to see Weird Al.

I'll keep you posted if I see anything else interesting coming through town though. Of course, I'm a bitter old man too.

I might actually have to go to the festival Radio 104's putting on... only for 2 Skinnee J's. I thought I missed their last CT show at Toad's, I don't think I wanna miss THIS one.

Damn you! The closest he is coming is 120 miles, and that's pain I don't need to buy into. I knew I should've gone when he was in Hershey on the "Scissors" tour.

Nah, you'd be surprised what we can produce down here.

See, I could just go see Al in Hampton Beach NH, but that place is like the Jersey Shore without the overwhelming sense of class. In addition, it's hard to try to enjoy a vacation town when you look out on the horizon and find that nuke plant blocking your view of the Atlantic.

And Grimis, having been to Annapolis as long as I could take it, I stand by my assessment. Though if past experience is anything to go by, I'd imagine our tastes differ considerably. You know, about women too.

The only shows I've heard about are the "classic rock" tours that seem to be never-ending anymore. We just had the Journey/Styx/REO show pass through and they managed to sell 6,000 tickets (yeah, we went). Def Leppard, on the other hand, haven't even completely sold the floor, and have given up on even putting riser seats on sale (no, we're not.)

Then apparently Kiss and Aerosmith are hitting the arenas in the fall.

Now I hear Cher's coming back.

Oh yeah, and Cheap Trick is putting on a free show at the local racetrack.

What decade is this again?!?

If you get the chance to see Cheap Trick, take it. They are NOT a nostalgia band just flogging the dead horse. I saw them a couple of years ago and they are still a damn strong live act and they really do a good job of keeping the act tight and firey.

That's too funny, cause they're here for the Calgary Stampede this year. We were all gonna go see them, more for the retro aspect of it. Good to hear they can still bring it.

That tour's also hitting the Resch Center here in Green Bay this summer. I may not be able to resist going...God help me.

I too can attest to the Cheap Trick "We'll play for free" tour, as they come to Cooper River in South Jersey for a free show this summer.

well, there are some fun shows coming to Cleveland this summer. I don't know if you'll get them all way over there in Mass., but if you do you should check 'em out:

Rollins Band doing all Black Flag songs to benifit the West Memphis Three. They always rock hard and fun and usually the band without Henry (I think they go by Mother Superior) opens up and they do a great show too.
Buzzcocks reunited! Pete Shelly-tastic!
Sonic Youth with Wilco. 'nuff said.
And at the end of summer, The Fall will be coming through.

I figure you old fogies will like all these bands. And at least around here
they are all only about $20 (or less) shows.

Oddly enough, I'm looking forward to the Journey/Styx/REO mega-concert. I may even go to see Boston - even though I'm probably *way* out of their demographic profile.

I would go to the whole nostalgia tour thing when it comes here, except that it's split over 2 days, and neither day has a strong enough lineup for me. Friday night has .38 Special, Sammy Hagar, and Journey. Sat. night has Night Ranger, Heart, Styx, and REO. Now if they could realign that and give me Night Ranger (who played my hometown 4th of July last year), Styx, REO, and Journey in one day well my power ballad lovin' ass would be there in an instant. But Journey doesn't justify one night by itself, and the rest while cool...they're no Journey.

If whoever booked Night Ranger and Styx were smart, they'd get Ted Nugent too, so's they could have a mini Damn Yankees reunion. They could play "High Enough", and then they could go the hell away.

THAT would be worth the $
